🌼 Spring into Action for Your Pet’s Health! 🌼
Spring is here, and as the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors with your furry friends. But as you and your pets embrace the fresh air, keep in mind a few important tips to ensure their health and safety this season:
🤧Watch for Allergies: Just like us, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. If you notice your pet scratching more than usual, sneezing, or having watery eyes, it might be time for a vet visit.
🪱Flea and Tick Prevention: Ensure your pet is protected with the right preventative treatments. These pesky parasites can lead to more serious health issues if not addressed.
🌷Garden Safety: Be mindful of the plants in your garden. Some spring blooms, like lilies and daffodils, are toxic to pets. Make sure your garden is pet-friendly, and keep an eye on curious nibblers.
🚰Hydration is Key: With more outdoor playtime, your pets will need to stay hydrated. Always have fresh water available, especially during those longer walks or play sessions.
🦟Heartworm Awareness: Mosquitoes become more active in spring, and they can carry heartworms. Ensure your pet is up to date with heartworm prevention treatments.
🧹Spring Cleaning Hazards: As you tidy up, remember that some cleaning products can be harmful to pets. Keep them out of reach and consider pet-safe alternatives.
Let’s make this spring a season of health and happiness for your furmates!

🐶How to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth🐶
✍️Pick the Right Toothbrush for Your Dog.
Dog toothbrushes are specially designed with smaller heads and softer bristles than human ones. Depending on your dog’s size, you might use a kid’s toothbrush, or for smaller dogs, a finger toothbrush could be the perfect fit.
✍️Choose a Dog-Friendly Toothpaste.
Dog toothpastes come in flavors like chicken and beef, making them both effective at fighting plaque and tasty for your pet. Never use human toothpaste on your dog—it contains ingredients that we shouldn't swallow, and your dog won’t know not to do that.
✍️Help Your Dog Get Comfortable with Mouth Handling.
Start by gently rubbing your dog’s muzzle with your finger. Gradually progress to touching their teeth and gums, helping them get used to the sensation. Repeat this step a few times before moving into brushing.
✍️Introduce the Toothpaste and Toothbrush.
Let your dog taste the toothpaste and get familiar with the toothbrush. Put some toothpaste on the brush and allow your dog to lick it off—the appealing flavor should make them more excited about the process.
✍️Pick the Right Time.
Brush your dog’s teeth when you’re both calm and relaxed. Make the experience pleasant by getting down to their level, rather than standing over them, which can feel intimidating.
✍️Start Brushing Small
Begin with the easiest-to-reach teeth until you both get more comfortable. Gradually work your way to the rest of the mouth, making sure to brush all surfaces, including along the gum line, to remove daily plaque build-up. Praise your dog throughout the session for their good behavior.
✍️A couple of minutes a day
Try to brush your dog’s teeth for two minutes every day. Incorporating this into your daily routine will help them get used to the process, which is key to preventing dental disease.
✍️Treats for Brushing
End each session with a reward, like a small dental treat or their favorite to
🐶🐱August is Dental Month at Byford Vet🐶🐱
Here are the top 4 ways to know if your pet may need a Dental with us!
🦷Bad Breath:
Persistent bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be a sign of dental disease. If your pet's breath has an unpleasant odor, it might be time for a dental check-up.
🦷Tartar Buildup and Discolored Teeth:
Visible tartar buildup on your pet's teeth, especially if the teeth are discolored or have a yellow or brown coating, indicates that a professional cleaning is needed.
🦷Red or Swollen Gums:
If your pet's gums appear red, swollen, or bleed easily, it can be a sign of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Healthy gums should be pink and firm.
🦷Difficulty Eating or Dropping Food:
Pets with dental issues may show signs of discomfort while eating, such as chewing on one side of the mouth, dropping food, or avoiding harder foods. This can indicate pain or sensitivity in their teeth or gums.
Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are crucial to maintaining your pet's overall health and preventing more serious issues.
If you notice any of these signs, it's best to make an appointment!
