These can be really subtle to us but are important clues given by dogs.✅
Two dogs do not have to meet and play simply because they are dogs.❗
Expecting all dogs to like other dogs is a little like saying we (as humans) must be friendly, converse and physically interact with every other human we encounter.
Dogs show us with their behaviour how they are feeling, we just need to get better at reading the signals.

Often clear signals ARE given by one dog to another, but some dogs really struggle to read other dogs....so it is our job to help them out when we see these signals that they need a break.

The examples in the graphic are just some ways dogs can communicate when they either need to stop play for a while or they may not want any interactions with other dogs (or even people).
Once you start to see these signals it can open up a new way of advocating for your dog, and that is SO important.

Top dog academy will be starting a new puppy program this coming Saturday 6th April.

If your puppy is aged 8 weeks to 16 weeks old, has had a minimum of one vaccination and you want to raise a confident, independent & obedient puppy, then you may want to consider this program.

We cover detailed crate training, and all the basic commands required for good manners/foundations ie: sit, drop, come when called, stand, loose lead walking, give, leave and on your bed.

Our poor old Pandas girl at 14.8 yrs old had to have surgery last Friday 😬 to remove a 3cm x3cm lump (which turned out to be lumpS)
From the back of her neck (22stitches, approx 25 cm long)& one tooth removed (not bad for her age) during her clean.
We can’t thank the team at Tweed coast vets enough, especially Dr. Merridie & Dr. Rachael for taking good care of our girl at this tender age.
She is now in recovery with Garfield and doing well. ❤️‍🩹

Rexi doing a great job controlling her impulses to not bark & chase the vacuum as previously practiced. Socialising your puppy correctly in the "critical" phase with all objects/machinery is so important to avoid unwanted behaviour moving forward. That is why we set various tasks to practice during the puppy program at Top Dog Academy, so owners get it right! Great education = great results!

Not a bad view of my office yesterday! Clear skies, crystal blue water, dogs, practising independence, training with great handlers followed by cafe etiquette for dogs. 😜 We did lots of recalls, side, close, and then the fun stuff, rollover, crawl, spin, and rotate. Lots of fun for everyone!

I started working with Rocky the Rotti six weeks ago aged 7 months, with NO prior training experience. Week one, he pulled me up and down the driveway with absolutely no understanding of loose lead walking. It took Rocky a few weeks to realise I was in control and now we’re on a winning team. He is a beautiful dog to work with.

This is what you can achieve with dedicated training.  Your dog untied staying at the table with high distractions in a cafe environment whilst you order from the counter! Very proud if this team! 👏

Some exciting news to share! Starting in February 2023 the puppy program will be extended to 5 weeks to include an entire session on crate training! Today was Ronnie’s last training session before he heads to the big apple, New York! We wish him, & this family all the best for a smoothly transition to their next chapter.

Some great feedback on 2yr old rescue, Kobe’s progress after completing the obedience program in May 22. I just wanted to share some footage of the progress Kobe has been making. He loves to chase the waves at the beach and would never come to me, but he is nailing his non-verbal recall now very consistently. His lead walking is still a work in progress as we venture out of his comfort zone, but around our area he is pretty perfect. Thanks so much for helping us make great progress! 🐶🌞

Dog Obedience Advanced classes teaches complex tricks and skills and are held at Bogangar Public school every Wednesday at 6.30 pm during day light savings hours. Puppy Obedience is held at Bogangar Public school every Saturday at 11.00am. Walking & Socialising groups held every Wednesday & Thursday mornings in Kingscliff and Saturday mornings at Bogangar Public School.
