๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ฆ Calling all dog parents! Today, let's dive into the incredible world of hydrotherapy and how it can aid our beloved furry friends in their recovery after cruciate ligament surgery. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿถ

๐ŸŒŸ We all want our dogs to bounce back from surgery quickly and comfortably, and hydrotherapy can be an absolute game-changer in their rehabilitation journey. Let's explore the benefits together! ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿพ Cruciate ligament surgery is a common procedure that can help our pups regain stability and mobility in their knee. However, the road to recovery can be challenging. That's where hydrotherapy steps in as a gentle and effective treatment option! ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿฅ

๐ŸŒˆ Hydrotherapy involves using water in a controlled environment to support and aid our dogs' healing process. The buoyancy of water reduces the weight-bearing force on their joints, allowing them to exercise without putting excessive strain on the affected limb. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿพ The resistance provided by water during hydrotherapy sessions helps strengthen the surrounding muscles, promoting stability and balance. This low-impact exercise is ideal for dogs recovering from cruciate ligament surgery, as it minimizes stress on their joints while maximizing the benefits. ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒŸ Not only does hydrotherapy aid in muscle strengthening, but it also assists in regaining joint range of motion. The gentle movements in the water help improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and enhance overall mobility, enabling our furry friends to get back on their paws in no time! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒˆ

๐Ÿถ The best part? Hydrotherapy sessions are supervised by trained professionals who can tailor the exercises to your dog's specific needs. They monitor their progress, adjust the intensity as required, and ensure a safe and positive experience throughout the entire rehabilitation process. ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŒŸ So, if your fur baby is recovering from cruciate ligament surgery, consider hydrotherapy as a valuable addition to their rehabilitation plan. It's a fun and effective way to aid their recovery, rebuild strength, and bring back their playful spirit! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’™๐ŸคOUR BEAUTIFUL SENIORS ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค

๐Ÿพโ„๏ธ Embracing the Cold with Hydrotherapy! ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ๐Ÿถ As the chilly months roll in, our senior furry companions with arthritis need some extra TLC to keep them comfortable and pain-free. Let's explore how hydrotherapy can be their winter superhero! ๐ŸŒŠโœจ

๐ŸŒŠ Soothing Warmth: Hydrotherapy sessions offer a cozy and warm environment for our beloved senior dogs. The heated water helps to soothe their achy joints, providing relief from the discomfort caused by arthritis. This gentle warmth promotes relaxation and improves overall mobility, making those winter walks a little easier.

๐Ÿ’ช Gentle Exercise: Cold weather can make it challenging for senior dogs with arthritis to engage in regular physical activity. Hydrotherapy provides a low-impact exercise option that allows them to move their joints and muscles without putting excessive strain on them. The buoyancy of the water supports their weight, making it easier for them to move and exercise comfortably.

๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ Joint Lubrication: The water's buoyancy reduces the pressure on your senior dog's joints, allowing them to move more freely. Hydrotherapy helps improve joint lubrication, enhancing flexibility and reducing stiffness. With regular sessions, you'll notice your furry friend's mobility improving, giving them a new lease on life during the colder months.

๐ŸŒŸ Holistic Pain Management: Hydrotherapy is a valuable addition to managing arthritis pain in senior dogs. The warm water, coupled with the therapeutic exercises, releases endorphins, our furry friends' natural painkillers. This holistic approach can reduce reliance on medications and provide long-lasting relief from arthritis discomfort.

๐Ÿ™Œ Expert Guidance: We will assess your pup's condition, tailor the sessions to their specific needs, and provide expert guidance throughout the process. Your furry friend will be in good hands!

โ„๏ธ Let's make the cold months a little warmer for our senior dogs with arthritis. Hydrotherapy can be their winter oasis, offering comfort, relief, and improved mobility. Let's help them enjoy this cozy season to the fullest! ๐ŸŒŠ

For those interested in Acupuncture for pain management:

How does Acupuncture work for pain management? I get asked this question regularly; particularly when people are surprised by the results in their animals when owners are not expecting it to work themselves.

Vets as a collective I'm finding are increasingly interested in and open to acupuncture as a treatment option particularly for pain having seen results in either themselves, family members or their patients once treated by another practitioner. Personal experience tends to open people's minds up to what is or isn't possible even though prior beliefs may have not necessarily been in agreeance.

Rather than saying something 'doesn't work' or 'can't work' because the individual doesn't understand the mechanism; perhaps it could be a better way to look at things by saying 'maybe I need to try to understand the mechanism'.

This is much like what happened to me when studying the IVAS course in 2010 where I was keen to leave after the first few days due to basically being in shock and not having a mental 'box' to place chinese medicine in. It sat outside of my brain programming. I just couldn't understand it.

That changed however upon returning to practice and seeing results in my early patients (particularly for pain). It was undeniable that something was in fact working even though I mightn't have understood how that was possible at the time. So instead of leaving the training I changed my thoughts to wanting to understand the mechanism; to know how this was possible. The results were right in front of me after all I had seen it for myself.

So I get it; I completely get it when people ask me 'how does acupuncture work?' I get it because I was once in those shoes also seeing a result in an animal that I didn't understand.

There are a range of ways of explaining the effects of acupuncture and I'm sure everyone who is naturally interested in this type of post is well aware of meridian (Quantum) theory and aspects of the effect to that level of explanation. I won't go into that here, but it's enough to say that those who understand either meridian theory or quantum mechanics would be content with this level of explanation.

Those more 'science' minded prefer to know the neuro-endocrine mechanisms which are now well documented and see 'evidence' such as the marked changes of acupuncture points on histopathology in terms of concentration of nerve, lymphatic and blood vessels in the acupuncture point tissue vs even 1-5mm away from the said point.

Here's another way to explain it which may be the simplest (and most accurate) yet. I explained it this way just today when treating a new patient for the first time to assist with their dog's pain management and I wish I had've thought of it 13 years ago. It would have resulted in less raised eyebrows & head scratching for many of my previous clients (and vets that I failed to enthuse at things like weddings and 21sts when quizzed why I would practice something like acupuncture) I'm sure.

When treating for pain; Acupuncture needles stimulate endorphin release in the body. Endorphins are yours (and your pet's) natural pain killing chemical. The more effective this natural stimulation the more pain relief the patient gets. The reason that often at the beginning of an acupuncture treatment more treatments are required vs later on is that with chronic pain it is paramount to break the pain cycle and what we vets call 'pain sensitisation of the nervous system' or pain 'wind up'. Put simply: the longer pain is inexitence the harder it is to get it to go away.

While single medicines can work well on their own; chronic pain often responds best to a multi-modal approach ie. treat with 2-3 or even more different analgesic (pain relief) options as the combined effect is often synergistic and much more effective than a single agent used alone - yes even acupuncture as a standalone can be limited.
(Synergism: An effect where medications or treatments' combined effect is better than the individual effects of each one used in isolation. ie. 1+1 can equal 5 & 1+1+1 can equal 10 with chronic pain management in animals if that makes sense?)

Acupuncture is really just one of these treatment options or 'agents'. It supplies enough endorphins to the body that in combination with other pain killing options has the ability to work synergistically in the patient and can be effective enough to break the 'pain cycle'.

Now, my son is asking me for the 45th time in 12 minutes if I can help him with his trains so it is time to enjoy the weekend. Have a good weekend everyone!

Rob

๐Ÿพ CORRECT HARNESS CHOICE ๐Ÿพ

Quite often as pet owners , we see a cute harness for our dogs and buy it. We often don't think about whether or not it is the right style or if it will affect their mobility.

Correct harness styles and sizes are super important when it comes to our dogs mobility and overall comfort. Choosing the wrong harness style can limit their range of motion and can be very uncomfortable.

Let's choose a harness that will help them stay comfortable and move their limbs freely!

Contact us today if you have any questions about the style or fit of your dogs harness ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿค
