Many of you have commented in clinic on our Australian flag.
Dr Sam erected it himself. Who loves it?
Today we saw little Lolli, who was watching her bloods to be run, and relaxing in the comfortable bed waiting for the results.
Isnโt she gorgeous!

While we love solving complex medical problems, we always have fun welcoming new puppies and kittens to the SCV family.
Our puppy consults help you understand what treatments your pets need to stay healthy, what to feed them, how to toilet train them and to answer any questions you have.

We saw Lucy Moseley, for fur loss 6 weeks ago, we took a tape sample and looked under the microscope and found a really weird cell, after more samples were taken and sent to the lab, she was diagnosed with a rare
fungal infection.
After fungal medication, Lucy is even starting to grow some fur back on her tummy (see picture) and her owner said her fur feels softer than it has been for a while.

Dr Sam here. Sunday morning I removed a 165g pet ๐ from a 150g tumour and this required precision, concentration, meticulous anaesthesia, and nerves of steel.
The owner was previously told at another vet clinic that there was no point in doing surgery, and little Delilah's Dad made an appointment on Saturday to say goodbye and booked her in for me to euthanase her.
I assessed the mass and gave another option - surgery that would have a chance of success, but also carry some big risks that would need to be considrted and a plan made.
Today (Sunday morning), her surgery occurred.
I used a combination of Minimally Invasive Surgery techniques to ensure this breast cancer was removed completely via a mastectomy (more like a 'rat-ectomy' as the tumour was so large it was really about removing the rat from its cancer - not the other way around!)
We worked quickly to avoid anaesthetic complications and we are thankful that our little friend has made a full recovery and is back to eating her fruit salad.
Just because they're much smaller than dogs and cats doesn't mean that pet rats don't deserve equal access to high quality surgery. Pet rats provide companionship, amusement and a purpose to many owners out there.
If you have a pet (dog, cat, rabbit or something smaller even) and would like a second opinion from me or a member of my team, just DM me with some details and we will get you seen quickly to give you all the options :)
'I'm not sure, am I growing properly, Dr Sam?'
Little Luna belongs to the owners of 'Termite' - the famous jam and condiment company on the way up to the Tablelands via just up the hill from us in Smithfield.
Luna presented for investigation of a painful limp. We hope it's not elbow dyspepsia but will soon see if she doesn't improve with our medicines at which point we will organise a CT scan of her elbows.
Who else thinks she is ADORABLE???
A busy weekend of Airway surgery rechecks - I always do post op consults at day 3 and 10 to make sure they're going well.
Coco was 2nd on my surgery list and she's doing brilliantly at day 3 already, snoring massively reduced, moving air effortlessly with each inhale and exhale, she is LOVING life and more importantly at a sharply reduced chance of sudden death due to respiratory blockage.
Head to scvc.as.me/boas today to book your pets airway assessment to see if surgery could improve their lives
Dr Sam here... I walked into my consult room this morning ready to begin healing animals and noticed a striking separation of light refraction off the bell of my stetheoscope shinining all the colours in the spectrum of visible light and painting my consult room in glorious luminosity.
It was good to stop and take a moment to realise that, metaphorically us veterinarians, have a diverse impact on lives other than our immediate patient... when we put that stethoscope on and begin diagnosing and healing animals, we aren't just treating the patient in front of us, but also we are healing the humans who love them ๐พ
We have the lowest prices in Cairns for the annual flea/tick/mite shot and its finally in stock now... make your appointment via scvc.as.me/CairnsTicks or call us on 4088 1066 to schedule a free appointment to discuss the convenient injection instead of giving monthly tablets.
โ๏ธ Incoming Cairns! Our specialist anaesthetist is en route for a busy day of operations and procedures we are doing at emergency vet today.
We are so lucky to have access to one of the few anaesthetists in Australia and bring his skills to the Far North to help animals who's families want the best care for them when undergoing surgical procedures.
Dr Sam, with this little kitty today who has a sore leg.
Fingers crossed, she'll be ok
Who thinks she's cute?
Cushings disease is an overreaction of the body's adrenal glands. Little Lucy is pictured here coming for her results after we did a special blood test to diagnose the disease.
Normal dogs should have a number of about 100 max and hers was well over 1,000
Cushings disease causes many things including
๐ค Excess thirst
๐ค Panting even when not overly hot
๐ค Excess hunger
๐ค Skin problems
๐ค Heart murmurs
It's also very treatable with a ๐ every morning.

Here is a great explainer video going through our airway surgery, what makes it different and less invasive, and how we help brachycephalic dogs breathe better and reduce their risk of sudden death.
We've performed hundreds of this life changing surgery in Sydney and are proud to bring our technique to Cairns now.
We are fully booked through July and early August, and will post some updates with our patients post op journeys over the next few weeks.
If you're curious about the procedure and to discuss the risks, just DM us or email [email protected]

One of our regular clients in Cairns was on holiday at Cape York, and spotted a very sad pup pleading for a lift in the middle of the bush, way out of town. They told their kids they'd give him a lift back in if he was still there at the end of the day. At the last second, they spotted him laying down barely able to lift his head - it turned out he sustained a major fracture and cannot use one of his back legs. He was so emaciated and dehydrated that heโd clearly give up on life, yelping in pain when moved.
They brought him back to their beach camp and gave him some love and care - heโs been with the family for a week now and he affectionately goes by the name โMangoโ. Heโs an incredible dog - brilliant with kids, a gentle soul, never left the families side while camping.
Knowing thereโs no Veterinary assistance up that way, they brought him the long journey back to Cairns where Kelly and myself are providing health care as we speak.
โ๏ธ We took x rays today and have shared them with our Sydney specialist team and ๐บ๐ธ based radiologist and we will cover all the expenses that Mango needs to get him back to full health and mobility, including flying more of our support team from Sydney, should that be required.
๐ฉธ To make matters worse, Mango's heartworm test came back POSITIVE and so on top of all these, we are having to aggressively treat his blood parasite to avoid his heart shutting down. We have a daily plan for him, and we are confident with our care, he will improve very quickly.
Thank you for reading and being part of the Southern Cross Vet family ๐๐ผ ๐ฅญ
Nurse Kelly loves cats at SCV Cairns Beaches (Smithfield Heights). Here, she is doing a series of injections to Nevada, INSIDE the cat carrier as Nevada will be a lot less scared inside there than on the vet bench.
Poor Nevada fell off his skybed when the suction chips failed and sustained a painful injury to his leg. We gave an anti-inflammatory ๐, a pain relief ๐ and a special amnesic ๐ to make him forget the frightening fall!
Be careful with those suction cup beds as they can fail and your pet can get injured.
At SCV Cairns we have the experience of performing hundreds of minimally invasive airway surgeries to help at risk and other breeds breath better, avoid sudden death and enjoy life more.
Make an obligation free airway assessment consult with us via our website and come meet Dr Sam in person and see if your is being held back and could enjoy life better and recover sooner with our innovative multi level procedure. ๐ We had two visitors attend the garden outside our clinic tonight and they were very welcome! For all those cat haters out there, remember that cats are awesome... they control vermin like rats and mice and prevent snakes from being attracted to your property. ***we don't condone allowing your cats to stray, and besides being illegal, they do kill native wildlife, the intention of this post was to remove some of the cat hate in our community. Since posting this people have said things like we should have euthanased those cats and other horrible things***

Today we had an awesome day doing home visits from Clifton, Trinity to Yorkies - we love our local community in Cairns Beaches. Just like how life goes we met new baby puppies in the morning, vaccinated some adolescent rascals through the day and then as the day drew to a close we had to help out an old, painful mate to 'find his wings' as we said goodbye and shed a tear with his family. Days like today show that working at the clinic is tough sometimes, full of joy mostly, and is a commitment to the families who choose Southern Cross Vet ALWAYS. Thanks to the families that choose us as we know how much choice you have. Yes, we love doing housecalls so please contact us if you'd like the convenience and ease of a home visit.
Dr Sam our Director has a special love of all dogs, and frenchies are one of his favourite breeds. We respect the breed and have unique insight into their needs and special needs ๐ โค๏ธ

Just a reminder that we are here for your pets at this stressful time for our community. Were offering FREE telehealth to those in need - if you can't get to your regular vet and your pet needs vet advice, or medication. Conditions permitting, we will be offering our concierge service to deliver medications to our clients also Remember that your pets could suffer with anxiety during this weather event and we can't explain to them why it's happening, and so often medication is really helpful to help them through. If your pet is shivering, barking excessively, has dilated pupils or is restless they could be suffering with short term anxiety so please let us know and we can prescribe some ๐ to keep their brains safe. To organise a telehealth, please book online at scvc.as.me/cairns or message us on 0406937726
