Dr Sam here. Sunday morning I removed a 165g pet #rat 🐀 from a 150g tumour and this required precision, concentration, meticulous anaesthesia, and nerves of steel.
The owner was previously told at another vet clinic that there was no point in doing surgery, and little Delilah's Dad made an appointment on Saturday to say goodbye and booked her in for me to euthanase her.
I assessed the mass and gave another option - surgery that would have a chance of success, but also carry some big risks that would need to be considrted and a plan made.
Today (Sunday morning), her surgery occurred.
I used a combination of Minimally Invasive Surgery techniques to ensure this breast cancer was removed completely via a mastectomy (more like a 'rat-ectomy' as the tumour was so large it was really about removing the rat from its cancer - not the other way around!)
We worked quickly to avoid anaesthetic complications and we are thankful that our little friend has made a full recovery and is back to eating her fruit salad.
Just because they're much smaller than dogs and cats doesn't mean that pet rats don't deserve equal access to high quality surgery. Pet rats provide companionship, amusement and a purpose to many owners out there.
If you have a pet (dog, cat, rabbit or something smaller even) and would like a second opinion from me or a member of my team, just DM me with some details and we will get you seen quickly to give you all the options :)
Nurse Kelly loves cats at SCV Cairns Beaches (Smithfield Heights). Here, she is doing a series of injections to Nevada, INSIDE the cat carrier as Nevada will be a lot less scared inside there than on the vet bench.
Poor Nevada fell off his skybed when the suction chips failed and sustained a painful injury to his leg. We gave an anti-inflammatory 💉, a pain relief 💉 and a special amnesic 💉 to make him forget the frightening fall!
Be careful with those suction cup beds as they can fail and your pet can get injured.
Vet visits can be fun, enjoyable and entertaining, they don't need to be scary or mundane!

When we started our clinic set amongst the lush gardens on our acreage in Smithfield (Mountain side), we wanted your pets' new vet clinic to be a relaxing environment but with all the modern professional equipment you'd expect from a state of the art clinic.
If you don't have a vet yet or have a new puppy or kitten, we'd love to meet you :)

🐈 We had two visitors attend the garden outside our clinic tonight and they were very welcome! For all those cat haters out there, remember that cats are awesome... they control vermin like rats and mice and prevent snakes from being attracted to your property.
***we don't condone allowing your cats to stray, and besides being illegal, they do kill native wildlife, the intention of this post was to remove some of the cat hate in our community. Since posting this people have said things like we should have euthanased those cats and other horrible things***

Today we had an awesome day doing home visits from Clifton, Trinity to Yorkies - we love our local community in Cairns Beaches. Just like how life goes we met new baby puppies in the morning, vaccinated some adolescent rascals through the day and then as the day drew to a close we had to help out an old, painful mate to 'find his wings' as we said goodbye and shed a tear with his family.
Days like today show that working at the clinic is tough sometimes, full of joy mostly, and is a commitment to the families who choose Southern Cross Vet ALWAYS. Thanks to the families that choose us as we know how much choice you have.
Yes, we love doing housecalls so please contact us if you'd like the convenience and ease of a home visit.
Dr Sam our Director has a special love of all dogs, and frenchies are one of his favourite breeds. We respect the breed and have unique insight into their needs and special needs 🐕 ❤️

Conditions permitting, we will be offering our concierge service to deliver medications to our clients also
Remember that your pets could suffer with anxiety during this weather event and we can't explain to them why it's happening, and so often medication is really helpful to help them through.
If your pet is shivering, barking excessively, has dilated pupils or is restless they could be suffering with short term anxiety so please let us know and we can prescribe some 💊 to keep their brains safe.
To organise a telehealth, please book online at scvc.as.me/cairns or message us on 0406937726

Cyclone Jasper and it;s effects, affect our pets in ways humans can't experience so some behavioural changes are normal now, but we can help them through with calmative medications available by prescription via our vets.
The rapid changes in atmospheric pressure can affect our pets' 'baroreceptors'- special pressure sensing receptors that can make pets feel weird and expereience anxiety.
