Peace Lily Therapies is an end-of-life and grief counselling support for people and pets. Also providing Animal Companion Celebrant services for pets.

End-of-life Counselling*

End-of-life counselling is particularly important for those facing the imminent loss of a pet or a human loved one. This specialized form of support helps individuals prepare emotionally for the inevitable, addressing anticipatory grief and the complex feelings that arise as the end approaches. Clients are supported to create meaningful goodbyes, to honour the life and memories of their loved ones, and establish a support system to lean on during this challenging time.

For pet owners, end-of-life counselling can also provide support for making compassionate decisions about their pet's care, ensuring the pet's comfort and dignity in its final days. It validates the deep bonds formed with pets and acknowledges the legitimacy of their grief, offering solace and understanding.

A qualified End-of-Life Doula for both humans and pets, Karen supports clients to navigate the emotional complexities of impending loss with a gentle and understanding approach. The support provided contributes to a dignified and peaceful transition, acknowledging the profound bonds we share with our loved ones.

Grief Counselling*

The loss of a pet or a loved one can be devastating, and the emotional turmoil that follows can be overwhelming. The loss of a human loved one brings an incomparable void, shaking the very foundations of our lives. Similarly, the pain of losing a beloved pet is often underestimated, yet for many, it is the same as losing a human loved one. Pets offer unconditional love and companionship and are members of our family, making their absence deeply felt.

Grieving is a natural response to such profound losses, but navigating through it can feel isolating and confusing. Counselling can provide a safe space to express feelings, explore memories, and develop coping strategies. Whether you have lost a pet or a loved one, support is provided to process your grief, and move towards acceptance and healing. Through understanding and support, your struggle with grief can turn into a journey of emotional resilience and recovery.

Animal Companion Celebrant ™

Holding a celebration of life, or a funeral can play a large part in our healing after suffering a loss. With budgets in mind, every celebration is prepared in conjunction with the family and individualised to honour the life of the deceased pet. Losing a pet is usually a child’s first encounter with death. The kids are encouraged to play an important part in the ceremony, so they feel included and supported to begin the journey to understanding that sadness, death, and grief are all a natural part of life.

Just as we are all unique, the way we grieve is too. Counselling sessions and pet celebrant services are all individual and tailored to your specific needs.

* Online counselling sessions are available Australia wide. Walk and talk counselling sessions and celebrant services are available in the Cairns, Port Douglas, Atherton Tablelands, Cassowary Coast areas only.

People sometimes ask if a certain amount of money from each session goes towards a charity. Or they call or send a message and ask what the fee is first, without even letting me know what it is they would like me to help with.

Others even say the fee is too much, when I know my fees are very reasonable compared to others. It sometimes feels like because I am a counsellor and provide the additional services that I do, that it is wrong to charge a fee.

It has taken a lot of study, time, effort and money to be able to gain the qualifications (and experience) to be able call myself a counsellor. As is the same with other counsellors. We need to keep learning and making sure we have the appropriate skills to keep our clients safe. And that is what it is about: Our client and their safety.

At this moment, counsellors are unfortunately unable to work within the Medicare system. This makes it very difficult for us, considering we are qualified, experienced, and more than capable of working with clients to help them work through a multitude of problems.

I have the additional qualifications for different areas of my practice that I need to make sure I am continually learning about. This also takes time, money etc. Each aspect of practice also means a different qualification, insurance, registration etc. which all form part of the fee structure.

A counsellor's time helping the client is also not limited to the hour it takes for the session. It takes time for us to prepare for the session, and time afterwards to make sure we have everything in order. Then we need to think about the additional time it takes us to work on referrals and other things we need to do to help make sure the environment is completely safe, and that we are capable of continuing to help the client.

Next time you are looking for a counsellor or someone to support you with something, don't shop around for the lowest price. Maybe consider whether it should be about the right support for you first, the fee second.

*I may not give a portion of my fee to charity, but my way of giving back is to sponsor a month in the North Qld Animal Rescue Inc. calendar. They are an amazing organisation and it's a great way of giving much needed support. Anybody who knows me knows I like to do it quietly and in my own way. This is my way.

It’s hard to talk about, but are you or someone you know struggling with making end-of-life decisions, or need some counselling? Maybe it is for a person, or maybe it is for a pet.

For a person, maybe you need a supportive ear, or some help with an Advanced Care Plan. Maybe it is nothing to do with end-of-life and you are looking for counselling to help with grief and loss, depression, anxiety or have work related issues you would like to talk about.

If it is a pet, maybe you are preparing for euthanasia and wondering how you are going to go through with it. Or maybe you have recently lost a pet and are struggling with the grief. You may even like a ceremony to say good-bye.

A qualified, registered counsellor, life experience has led to a passion for end-of-life support, which through further training has become a specialty. With additional qualifications as an end-of-life Doula, Animal Companion Celebrant ™ and Animal Companion Doula, end-of-life services such as people and pet doula support, along with funerals and celebrations of life for your pet can also be provided.*

Your counselling and end-of-life support provider for people and pets, Peace Lily Therapies can provide the below services:

Counselling

Specialising in pet loss and end-of-life, and also providing services for grief and loss, depression, anxiety and work-related issues.

Various in-person and online counselling sessions are available, providing a safe and comforting environment to freely discuss your thoughts, share your emotions and be fully supported. With the formalities of an office removed, in-person sessions are ‘Walk and Talk’, meaning the session is conducted outdoors, amongst nature and the fresh air. In a safe and private space, these can be either walking or sitting and talking together. Online sessions are conducted over a secure platform, from a safe location that is convenient for you.*

End-of-life Doula

Help through the last transition of your life.

- End-of-life support. Working through your fears, find your voice, and supporting you so it can happen just as you want it to.
- Assistance with preparation of an Advanced Care Plan.

Animal Companion Doula

Making the decision regarding euthanasia or having the loss of a pet thrust upon us unexpectedly is distressing and confusing. Dependant on each client’s needs, doula services can include:
- Development of an end-of-life plan to support the family with the pet’s journey through palliative care. Supporting veterinary advice and treatments, the aim of the plan is to help clients keep track of treatment logistics during the final stages of life.
- Provision of support in the lead-up to, and after euthanasia. Some clients may wish to develop an after-care support plan to help them during this stressful time.
- Euthanasia support, either attending as a support person, or on behalf of the pet’s human whilst euthanasia is being carried out.

Animal Companion Celebrant ™
