Healthy nutrition is all about diversity, whether its for humans, horses or reptiles. Eating the same food week after week is a path to problems - the same as feeding a single species to a pet. The quality of food is also super important! That's why we claim our feeder insects at Bugs Alive are so healthy - we feed a mix of grains, frege (fruit & vege), vitamins & minerals and brewer's by-products (grains, yeast, liquids) to maximise the health & vitality of our products.
Publicly available information shows the average nutritional status of feeder insects are:
Black Soldier Fly Larvae - 37% protein, 32% fat, 4.5:1 Ca:P
Crickets - 18% - 5% - 0.3:1
Woodies - 21% - 9% - 1:3
Silkworms - 13% - 2% - 1:1.4
Mealworms - 19% - 9% - 0.07:1
Earthworms - 11% - 3% - 1.5:1

So to ensure the health of your pet, why dont you mix up their feeder insect diet. If at first your pet turns their nose up at the new feed, just let them go hungry for a day or so and they'll soon change their mind. Remember, animals in the wild regularly go hungry and the latest human health advice is to also to do intermittent fasting.

Also, 'diversity is the spice of life'. A varied diet improves health, so vary the species of live insects. At first a fussy eater may refuse the new insects, but if you let them get a bit hungry, they'll soon change their mind. Here we witness the secrete life of crickets - who knew the cricket club scene was so lively.
Crickets are known for their distinctive chirping sounds, which are produced by males rubbing their wings together. This sets the soundtrack for their interesting dance moves.
This is the male cricket's way of serenading potential mates while sending a "bug off" message to rivals. As the dance floor heats up it's a sure sign our crickets are ready to lay & babies are on the way!

Nature Nuggets: Fascinating facts from the cockroach chronicles!
- There's almost 4000 cockroach species, but only a tiny fraction are considered pests.
- The largest species are over 15cm long & 30cm wingspan (makes you appreciate the small ones!)
- Some species mate only once & are pregnant for the rest of their lives!
- Cockroaches are survival champs; when males are scarce, females go solo, reproducing through parthenogenesis (reproduce alone).
- Many species defy insect norms by giving birth to live young—a clever tactic to outsmart egg-hungry predators!
- We've saved the best 'til last - some research suggests cockroaches can survive without their heads for a week! They are not dependent on their mouth to breathe, but they eventually die because without a mouth they will die of dehydration.
Headless but hearty, cockroaches are the true champions of resilience in the insect world.
