Mr Sammy was rescued by the amazing people of Remote Animal Assistance - FNQ
along with Silver (posted previously).
Not only was he severely underweight and worm burdened, Sammy also had THREE fractured bones - one being his right femur and other two bones in his right forearm (radius and ulna)😱😰

Sammy was brought straight to Dr Max, where X-ray diagnostics were performed to determine these fractures (pictured below). Due to the femoral fracture healing improperly causing him severe pain with its unnatural bend, the best course of action was a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)- an orthopaedic surgery in which the femoral head and neck located in the hip socket is excised in order to restore function. Luckily invasive measures weren’t required to treat for his forearm bones, instead Dr Max bandaged him a pretty pink splint 💖

Sammy has now past his exercise restrictions and has done a great job in healing!

We are so excited for him to find his furever home soon ❤️

If you think you might be the right home for him or would like to donate to their beautiful charity, be sure to message Remote Animal Assistance!

Meet the cutest “silver lining” 💙

Little Silver was unfortunately hit by a car at a young age resulting in a displaced femoral fracture. The team from Remote Animal Assistance - FNQ brought him to Dr Max who was able to secure the fractured bone back into place using external fixators - a metal frame surgically attached through the skin, tissue and bone to hold to the afflicted area in place internally for optimal healing.

After a whole month of strict rest, Silver was able to have the pins removed by Dr Max and begin his rehabilitation. He’s already learning to walk well on his broken leg, and enjoying staying at a lovely foster carers house with his foster friend Sammy (stay tuned for Sammy’s post later this week 😉). We look forward to see your progression Silver!

Thank you to his foster carer, Emma, for sending through the lovely photos by Rowan Hutchison Photography 😁🐾

A beautiful outcome for one of our amazing locals - the Black Cockatoo. 🌿❤️

The wild bird was brought into clinic by a kindhearted member of public after being hit by a car and subsequently suffering from a concussion. After some TLC in clinic, it was ready and released, flying off to its nearby friends 🥰

Best of luck! 🪶

Vernon’s new smile 😄🐶

Vernon, the handsome Labrador cross, presented to clinic with sudden swelling to his lower mouth. Upon examination, Dr Max found that there was an invasive mass in his lower jaw which encompassed his incisor and canine teeth. 🤯🦷
As this was affecting his quality of life and possibly malignant, the best treatment for his rapidly growing oral tumour was surgical resection - excising the front of his lower jaw, otherwise known as a Bilateral Rostral Mandibulectomy. 👨‍⚕️

The oral surgery went smoothly and he stayed in hospital overnight with continuous pain relief and care to ensure he recovered properly before returning home 🩹💜

Vernon has been an absolute trooper, already owning his new smile post operative! Missing part of his jaw hasn’t stopped his love of food, as he has returned to his normal routine of being the goodest boy 🥰

Keep on smiling Vernon 😄

12/03/2024

Treh was brought into clinic by Cairns Animal Rescue Inc 2 in a serious state 🤕 Not only was he suffering from malnutrition and hookworm burden, X-rays showed that he also had an open femoral fracture that calcified into an unnatural and painful shape. Because this injury was severely damaged and infected, the best course of action was for Dr Max amputate the limb.

Treh (named after the number tre/three) stayed in hospital with ongoing treatment until he no longer had one foot in the grave and could to go into foster care. ❤️‍🩹⚕️

He is now putting his best foot forward (whichever of the 3 left that is) and living life to the fullest! Treh is putting on a healthy amount of weight, learning how to walk again, and learning to become less fearful of the world 🥰

Want to help rescues like Treh? Cairns Animal Rescue regularly facilitates the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of dogs in need. This costs their non-for-profit charity an arm and a leg (definitely a leg in Trehs case 😉) and they rely heavily on the kind hearts of our community to help ❤️

We hope you have a happy and hoppy future Treh as you find your Furever home soon 😊 Break a leg! (Only figuratively, please)

River the 10 weeks old Great Dane puppy came into clinic with a sore eye 🤕

To determine the nature of her ailment, Dr Max used a Fluorescein Eye Strip - an ophthalmic diagnostic contrast agent used to detect damage on the cornea. The stain showed signs of corneal ulceration to her left eye.

River was prescribed medication and given a general health check to ensure no other issues needing treatment, then sent home for recovery 🩹

She was the eye-deal patient during her stay, on her best behaviour ❤️

🚨If you notice your pet is showing signs of eye trouble, please contact us ASAP so that immediate treatment can be provided🚨

⚠️Graphic Warning: Dog Fight Wounds⚠️

Kenzie came into clinic all the way from Thursday Island, located at the tip of Cape York, after suffering from trauma to her head, face and ears due to a dog attack 😥🤕

Due to how serious her wounds were, Dr Max commenced surgery as soon as she arrived in Cairns to give her a fighting chance! Dr Max had to remove large amounts of necrotic tissue and pus from the wounds to prevent sepsis 😷Unfortunately, in one of Kenzie’s ears, the eardrum and canal were no longer viable because of the trauma and subsequent infection of being ripped into an irreparable shape so it was surgically removed👂😵

It was a long road to recovery for her as she had to spend a few weeks in hospital with ongoing medications, laser treatment and monitoring. She has since made it back to her home island and although has lost majority of her hearing, she is happy and alive ❤️🎊

Special thank you to Thursday Island Animal Support Group Inc for helping Kenzie and her family to get the treatment she critically needed!

Best of luck Kenzie from all the team 💙

Max helping Max 👨‍⚕️🤝🐈

This week’s post is about a special kitty called Max🐱 and a serious issue we see in our cat patients regularly that owners should be aware of. (Incoming long post📖🤓)

Urethral Obstruction (UO), a type of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) that is mainly seen in male cats, is when the urethra (connective tube from the bladder which outputs urine from the body) is partially or completely blocked.

🚑🆘An obstruction can be FATAL, requiring IMMEDIATE veterinary attention. 🆘🚑

Some symptoms of obstruction are: 📝
- Painful urination (dysuria)
- Urinating outside the litter box (periuria)
- Blood in urine (haematuria)
- Small, frequent amounts of urine (pollakiuria)
- Straining to urinate (stranguria)
- Struggling or inability to walk
- Irregular stance / hunched back
- howling in pain and/or panting
- Lethargy or disorientation
- Excessive licking of genitalia

Max🐱 recently came in suffering from a repeat UO. Thankfully, his owner was on the ball, recognising the signs of UO’s and getting him straight to the vet for emergency treatment.

Given that this was not the first time Max🐱 has suffered from a blockage, instead of just unblocking the obstruction, Dr Max👨‍⚕️ also performed a surgery on him called a Perineal Urethrostomy (PU). A PU is when the outer end of the urethra (the pe**le urethra), being the narrow sector where blockages mainly occur, is removed to so that the wider part of the internal urethra (pelvic urethra) is the new exit. This is an effective, long term preventative of UO’s with an extremely low chance of a blockage reoccurrence.

Max🐱 is now currently on the mend with routine check ins with Dr Max👨‍⚕️ to monitor his progress, medications to aid in his treatment, a Red Light Therapy (RLT) regimen to help heal his surgical wounds, a Veterinary Grade Urinary Diet (Hill’s C/D or Royal Canin Urinary S/O) and lots of good chin scratchies from the nurses👌🏽

We look forward to seeing him progress through his treatment plan ❤️

✨ Zinger Update ✨
We wanted to share with you all that Zinger, who spent most of 2023 as our clinic dog, has found and settled into her furever home ❤️

Zinger came to us last year, in line for euthanasia after being hit by a car resulting in a fractured femur and jaw (X-rays shown below). 🦴🤕

The My Pet Hub Team fell in love with her instantly and couldn’t bear to let her go without a fight so we took her in. Dr Max performed all her surgical treatments and months on months of care Pro Bono. Zinger was named after Dr Max’s favourite burger by the nurses 🍔

She is now living her best life, chomping all the water she desires! We hope you have the best life Zinger No Letty 💝
