FNQ Wildlife Rescue has been providing an essential service to wildlife in Tropical North Queensland for over 30years. At present, we have over 160 members covering an area from Mission Beach, west to Mt Surprise and north to Weipa. Our 24-hour 7-day rescue hotline receives well over 5,000 calls each year calling for our volunteers to assist sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife. Many of these anima

ls are taken in by our volunteer carers who raise them to a stage where they can be released back into a natural environment. Raising wildlife is no mean feat and many carers give up months of their time and much of their own money to rehabilitate these animals. Many carers spent up to $70.00 per week on fauna supplies for the animals they have in care. Due to the high cost of living some carers can no longer afford to feed the animals thus we need help to buy products for them. As a volunteer organisation, we receive no Government funding and rely on our membership, sale of wildlife supplies and donations to keep us going, yet we provide an essential service to the community. Rehabilitation is very expensive, although we provided fauna at cost and yearly petrol vouchers, there is a huge cost on our carers who most of them are pensioners. We have a very large administration expenditure of $18,000.00 (being rent, electricity, telephone, insurance etc.}
This financial year 2022, 1837 animals went into care of which 1587 were birds.

One lucky little Cockatoo.
The tree was cut down . Nobody knew there was a nest in this straight dead looking tree.
The little one fell like 40m to the ground luckily the fall was broken by other tree foliage on its way. Thanks to Renee for rescuing it and now in the capable hands of Lee-Anne.

Morning munch 🥬

Raine is a gorgeous green sea turtle in the care of Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre while she recovers from a neurological parasite called coccidiosis. This parasite is contracted through food and works its way into turtles brains making it extremely hard for them to navigate and change direction while swimming.

Since being in care Raine has undergone a series of treatments to remove the parasite and can now freely change directions and swim normally!

With a focus on allowing her to rest and recover, she is provided with lots of nutrients through high protein squids for muscle growth and leafy greens for vitamins like this bok choy!

Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre was co-founded by Jennifer Gilbert and even has a turtle rehab centre on-site at the JCU EduQuarium.

An update on the little double eyed fig parrot that had latched onto my friends finger

This male Double Eyed Fig Parrot was found hanging off a desert rose plant. I was worried about a possible dislocated shoulder or fracture somewhere so off to the vets he went… yup, definitely a fracture in the lower wing. The attempt to strap the wing to his body caused him to throw a hissy fit at the bottom of the cage with continuous screaming 🙄 so it’s free but still strapped. So.. how do you stop him from flapping? Easy… fill the cage with so many figs… he won’t be able to flap 😉 Loki (that’s his name) will be a week like this then off for a checkup.

A huge thank you to Metro Mines nth of Weipa for taking the time to send this little one down to Cairns on the plane. Thanks to Martin Saker for collecting it and taking it to the vets and Julie our sea bird expert for taking it into care.
Thought to be one of the tropic birds not normally found up this way.

Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads out there

Merlin, our coolest resident rainforest dad, who has become a father for the fourth time only a few weeks ago. He’s yet to start venturing out away from his nest with his two new chicks but won’t be long before we see him with them

Big shout out to all those wonderful hard working dads .... Happy Fathers Day
