Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre

Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (CTRC) is a volunteer organisation rehabilitating sick and injured marine turtles and running education programs.

Here at CTRC our mission "Protecting and promoting the conservation of marine turtles" serves as the guiding principle and therefore underpins the aims and objectives of our organisation. Our aims and objectives include the following:

- Do all that we can to rehabilitation sick and injured turtles in our care
- Endeavor to provide assistance, where required or requested, in efforts to rescue tu

rtles in distress
- Share our knowledge in the interests of turtle rescue, rehabilitation and research
- Endeavour to raise awareness of issues faced by marine turtles through positive publicity and teaching
- Help to promote humane and sustainable practices through co-operation and education
- Seek to positively influence Government Policy relating to turtle conservation and the marine environment

An amazing in water rescue today of a female adult loggerhead turtle found struggling at Flynn reef. She was reported by several dive boats over the past 2 weeks. She had been attacked by a shark and is in a bad way sitting in the same spot on the bottom. A huge thankyou to all the divers that kept an eye on her, photographed and kept us up to date. We got a window in the weather today and headed out. Pro dive showed us where she was this morning. Ashleigh went straight in snorkelling and found her in 5 minutes. Christian and Ingo dived down and she swam to them to be rescued and they only needed to guide her back to the boat she did not resist. The hardest part was getting her in the boat she is no lightweight. Safety tucked up and back to JCU.
Everyone involved this morning was incredible....Christian for his sexy boat Ingo, Ashleigh, Carly and Peter without the 5 of us it would not have been possible to rescue her. It will be a long road to recovery she will more than likely loose a flipper and we have to pack the holes where the teeth went in.
This is in itself a story on an animal asking for help.

Come down to the Cairns Pier this Sunday and check out our market stall 9am - 2pm. The Easter Bunny will also be there 10am - midday handing out chocolates. Lots of fun and free activities for the children.

What a great Trivia Night at the Barron River Hotel, Stratford, Cairns. A lot of fun and $1,386.00 was raised for the turtles. A big thank you to Garrath and his staff at the Barron River Hotel for their hospitality. A big day sadly first up a snub nose dolphin stranding who was unfortunately dead. She had cut marks from nets on her body.
Then Larissa and Michael Hale drove a little hawksbill down from Cooktown with damage to 2 flippers. Fingers crossed for the little one.

We recently had a visit by Haarlem (5) and Bodhi (9) to our Turtle Centre at the Cairns Aquarium. Haarlem and Bodhi have been fundraising for CTRC by holding market stalls since their last visit to the turtles. They raised $1,385.00 - what an amazing achievement. A big thank you Haarlem and Bodhi.
