Become an effective handler
Working in a group environment requires some handling skills so that handlers are more effective when working in a group or in public. Be an effective handler for your dog ๐Private lessons will work with you and your dog individually, building skills and confidence and making you both a team.
Group training Tuesday night. I am do proud of all handlers who have come so far.
Last night was the last session of our 'Walk-with-Me' program. Pokie the rescue dog, is much more confident on his walks now, he trusts his handler to give him every opportunity to avoid meeting other dogs. We practiced the technique and he nailed it. Marlee, the German Shepherd, has calmed down so much and her handler has plenty of opportunity to reward her for the behaviours we want. Certainly, Marlee's journey has only begun, but the improvements are so encouraging and her handler is working so hard to help her enjoy a daily walk that we all take for granted. Congratulations to these dedicated teams ๐ โค๏ธ
Our 'Walk-with-Me' class last night โค๏ธ๐ฅ I was actually having goose bumps taking this video, and here is why. It may just look like people walking their dogs... boring. But it was the most amazing result for my handlers who are dealing with reactivity and extreme anxiety with their dogs. Being able to walk with their dogs being relaxed ๐ is an achievement. It is hard to imagine the struggle some dog handlers are facing just taking them for a walk, many choosing to go out very early so that they would not encounter other dogs, or even being too worried about taking them out at all. In the WWM program, handlers are learning techniques to increase their dog's engagement, they learn to manage their dogs effectively and what it is they need to do when encountering other dogs along the way. Certainly these ingrained behaviours are not fixed in a couple of sessions, but these handlers are committed to help their dogs, they are helping them build confidence and move towards a better life with their canine partners. Congratulations... last night was awesome ๐ ๐
Our super star Mako, is learning how to move her body in competition heeling. The secret is having a good technique, knowing when to reward and how to motivate your dog to work with you. Mako and her handler have nailed it ๐ This activity should only be undertaken in very short sessions with young dogs and is a competition exercise.
Recalls like these don't happen by chance. Mako is still a puppy, but this is the stage where dogs learn the quickest. It is also important that regular training continues, that these skills are practiced with more distractions and in different locations. It takes 2 minutes of your time each day to practice 3 recalls... taking this time pays off big time.
Mako, this beautiful Shepherd puppy is growing so quickly. Here she is showing her heeling style.
Pokie had his 2nd private session in my 'Walk-with-me' program. He is starting to relax and offer behaviours to his handler and is not being triggered by the decoy dog. Very nice work from this team ๐
is your dog timid? Does your dog not want to be anywhere near people? Does your dog not cope well in strange environments or near other dogs? Meet the beautiful Dixie. Dixie was very timid and would not let me touch her when she first came to my 'Walk-with-Me' program. Look at her now ๐ After completing this program and continuing in my weekly classes, she is a different dog. She loves to come to class, greets me happily and is progressing extremely well with every day life skills. Book now into rhe new program starting shortly. Email: [email protected]
Group training class... hard to believe that here are dogs previously reactive, who are doing so well ๐
