Phase 2:
After 30 years of animal rescue, adopting from shelters and 5 years of RSPCA desexing work, have taken the next step into normal canine breeding behaviour.
And Valentina and Ludovic were expecting puppies! They are both pedigree standard poodles. Ludovic is champagne colour with apricot colour mother. Valentina is a rare mahogony colour with both parents also mahogony. We were expecting a 3:1 genetic split between dominant and recessive colours respectively.
Female dogs come โ€œon heatโ€ (start to cycle) around 6 months of age when they become hormonaly mature. The whole process is about 3 weeks but the females are only receptive to males for a very short period when the hormone levels are correct - female dog will decide when they are ready to breed and the male will take the que. The fertile period is not at the same time as the bloody discharge in the female. The dogโ€™s incredible sense of smell allowed both males and females to recognise the right hormonal stage.
On the 21 day ultrasound we counted 8 puppy-poodles-to-be ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ˜Š

Photos: ultrasound, telling Valentina she is having 8 puppies, getting larger through the 63 day pregnancy, mother-and-father-to-be relaxing, Lui taking a look at a flat pack puppy pen, Lui giving up on the flat pack, still enjoying gentle beach walks in the evening.

For the last 18 months we have been involed in a canine reproductive behaviour project ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿฉ.
The learnings from this mission will assist in providing better care to our dog patients.

Are there options for reproductive control in dogs?

Although permanent sterilisation is the number one recommendation in both males and females, in some cases another option may be recommended by a vet for the male dog. The decision to desex a dog should be made in consultation with the pet parent and their vet to consider the individual dogโ€™s breed, purpose and lifestyle.

Here is Lui trying out the Suprelorin implant. The implant is placed under the skin with a needle similar to the microchip needle. It is very sharp and Lui was perfectly fine without local anaesthetic or sedation.
There is a 6 or 12.month option for controlling both reproduction and testosterone levels.

This product can be used where a temporary trial of reduced testosterone is wanted. Also, an injection can be timed to be given 4 weeks prior to an in-contact female dog coming on heat. This is an option if temporary control of breeding is desired.

Lui did well on the implant. We measured his testosterone levels and found out that they did not come back to normal for 8 months (on a 6 month implant), which the product information does state as a possible effect.
Other than being more reactive in his behavior without testosterone onboard, Luiโ€™s personality did not change.
This is a good option in cases where surgery is not possible due to other health concerns for the individual male dog ๐Ÿ˜Š

About Monday: Cairns Post:
Well, potential to misquote in the media when it comes to medical issues is enormous. Could have been worse ๐Ÿ˜‚

A bit about this dramatic article. First of all, rats are everywhere! Smithfield is full of them and has always been so. They are busy looking for food and breeding. A large warehouse like Bunnings carries animal food, garden supplies and also left-overs from peopleโ€™s lunches. Itโ€™s ideal place to find some food.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by infection with pathogenic (able to cause illness) species in the genus Leptospira.
There are more then 300 different types of Leptospira, only a limited number can infect dogs and humans.
Most infections are occupational - in agriculture or recreational - water exposure to contaminated water.
Presence of bacteria is maintained in hosts that do not become sick. Rodents such as rats ๐Ÿ€ are common hosts and the bacteria can stay in their kidneys for a length of time.
The bacteria is shed into the environment via urine.
Soil, puddles and stagnant streams can get contaminated.
For a person to get infected they would need to touch rat urine or contaminated water and then touch their mouth (a snag at Bunnings anyone ?). Or grab the rat and get bitten, itโ€™s harder to get infected that way.
Of course, our dogs stick their noses and tongues into absolutely everything!! And we can catch this disease from our dogs if they brcome unwell.
If you are NOT SURE if your dog is fully vaccinated against the CORRECT type of Leptospira, we can check their records for you. Please give us a call on 4000 0619 ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿˆ

April 26th was World Veterinary Day.
Sometimes we forget how good most dogs have it in Australia ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ
These Fiji ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฏ dogs are hungry, full of worms, itchy with mange and fleas and are constantly breeding.
They are the survivors and have worked out where the resort guests eat and also how to look friendly and cute the best they can.
We will be forever the ones with a handbags full of chicken and meat, sneaking the breakfast milk to the village dogs. They eat everything - bread, cereal, cake.
Large part of any holiday is making the village dogโ€™s lives a little brighter, even if only for a short while.

We are pleased to announce that our clinic is helping the plight of Dormice. They are super cute nocturnal mouse-like rodents that live in bushes. They even made a cameo appirance in โ€œAliceโ€™s Adventures in Wonderlandโ€ the movie.
These tiny, sleepy creatures live in woodlands and bushes and are in danger of loosing their native habitat.
At Smithfield Central Vets we have grown excellent lush bushes and vines which are the perfect home for Dormice.
Our poodles are great shepherds and make sure that our Dormice have everything they need, checking in on them frequently.

It has been toughโ€ฆ we had to say too many unexpected goodbyes to our beloved dog friends. They are part of our story too and will be remembered ๐Ÿ™.

๐ŸซฃAND NOW - VERY SCARY POST ๐Ÿซฃ
๐ŸฅฒParalysis ticks ๐Ÿฅฒ

They are everywhere, hard to find and attach to our lovely animals at any opportunity.
A few weeks back we attended the Tick Paralysis Conference with all the latest treatment updates and the smartest vets presenting new research.

Take home message: DO NOT DELAY TREATMENT if you find a PARALYSIS TICK on your pet!!!!

As soon as a tick attaches on the animal, their salivary glands start to grow to a 100 times their dormant size. This means that suddenly there is a 100 times more poison being pumped into your loved pet. But you wonโ€™t know the exact moment this happens.
You pet could look fine one moment but unable to breath only a few hours later and fighting for their life.

Talk to us about the latest in tick paralysis preventatives for cats and dogs and if you suspect your pet suffering from tick envenomation take them to the vet immediately.
Stay safe ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿฆฎ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ปAND
