🐾 How to Create a Pet First Aid Kit 🐾

Emergencies can happen anytime, so it’s important to be prepared for your pet’s safety. Here's a simple guide to creating your own pet first aid kit!

🔹 Gauze & Bandages: For wrapping wounds and controlling bleeding.
🔹 Adhesive Tape: To secure bandages, but never directly on fur!
🔹 Antiseptic Wipes: To clean minor wounds. Avoid alcohol-based products.
🔹 Tweezers: Handy for removing ticks or splinters.
🔹 Digital Thermometer: Know what’s normal for your pet (dog: 38.3-39.2°C; cat: 37.7-39.1°C).
🔹 Saline 0.9% for flushing wounds if needed
🔹 Gloves
🔹 Sterile Lubricant
🔹 Emergency Contacts: Include your vet’s number and nearest emergency hospital (that's us!).

Having these items ready can make a big difference in an emergency! 🐶🐱 Remember, always contact us for guidance if your pet is injured or sick.

📞 Call us at 4015 3459 if you need help or more advice on pet first aid.

🎶 It’s time!! 🎶

Just like Mariah says, but this time it’s all about protecting your pets! Lepto vaccinations are BACK in stock at most general practice clinics around Cairns! Leptospirosis is a dangerous and life threatening bacterial disease that can spread through contaminated water and soil, affecting your pet’s kidneys, liver, and overall health. 🐾💉

Don’t take the risk—give your pet the protection they need. Lepto can be life-threatening, but with the right vaccination, you can help keep your furry friend safe and healthy.

Do you know how to search your furry friends for ticks?

Follow these simple steps to find them on your animal:
🐶 Feel for lumps and bumps by running your fingertips through their entire coat at skin level
🐱 Start with their heads and necks, and make sure to look into their mouths and ears
🐶 Take off their collars to see if there are any ticks underneath
🐱 Keep looking all the way down to their paws on their front and back legs. Ensure to look between their toes and don't forget the tail!

Whilst we tend to have a "tick season" here in FNQ, ticks can be found ALL YEAR AROUND. Please ensure you're checking your animals for ticks after every time they've been outside and always ensure your furry friends are up to date with their tick prevention! 🐾

Remember, if in doubt - give us a shout! ☎️ 4015 3459

🚨 Heatstroke Alert: Protect Your Pets! 🚨

As temperatures rise, it’s crucial to be aware of the dangers of heatstroke in pets. We want to make sure your furry friends stay safe as we roll into the hotter seasons of FNQ!

🐶 What is Heatstroke? Heatstroke occurs when a pet’s body temperature rises to dangerous levels, often due to exposure to high temperatures or excessive exercise. Pets, especially dogs, can’t regulate their body temperature as effectively as humans, making them more vulnerable.

🐾 Signs of Heatstroke:

🌞 Heavy panting or difficulty breathing
🌞 Excessive drooling
🌞 Agitation or restlessness
🌞 Vomiting or diarrhoea (possibly with blood)
🌞 Weakness or collapse
🌞 Bright red or pale gums

🌡️ What to Do if You Suspect Heatstroke:

✅ Move your pet to a cooler area immediately.
✅ Offer small amounts of cool (not cold) water.
✅ Use wet towels to gently cool them down, especially on their paws, belly, and neck.
✅ Contact us immediately – heatstroke is a medical emergency and can be fatal if not treated quickly.

⚠️ Prevention Tips:

✅ Avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day (opt for early morning or late evening).
✅ NEVER leave pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
✅ Provide plenty of fresh water and shade when outside.
✅ If your pet shows any signs of heatstroke, call us right away on 4015 3459 or come directly to our emergency hospital. We’re here 24/7 to help!

Stay safe and keep your pets cool! 🐾❤️

Are you concerned for your pet but unclear if a trip to the vet is necessary? Animals are often experts at masking illnesses, wounds, and discomfort. If left untreated, even a minor issue has the potential to get worse. 😬

In addition to your pet's routine medical checkup, it is always wise to go to your vet if something doesn't seem quite right. It won't just calm your mind; it could also prevent a health problem from getting more dreadful. 🩺

Some of the most frequent pet emergencies we see at our hospital are listed here. If your pet is suffering any of the following illnesses or symptoms, we urge that you take them to the vet right away since they can be potentially life-threatening:

🐾 Snake Bites
🐾 Tick Paralysis
🐾 Struggling to urinate
🐾 Diarrhoea and/or vomiting
🐾 Not eating or drinking
🐾 Cane Toad poisoning
🐾 Heat stroke
🐾 Seizures
🐾 Penetrating wounds such as dog fight wounds
🐾 Major trauma (e.g. Hit by car)
🐾 Blood loss
🐾 Swollen or distended abdomen
🐾 Difficulty breathing
🐾 Broken Bones
🐾 Burns and smoke inhalation⁣
🐾 Coughing
🐾 Severe Pain

Remember, we are here on site 24/7 should you ever need us. If in doubt, give us a shout on 4015 3459 📞

Recognising Signs of Pain in Cats and Dogs

September is . Our pets can't speak, but they often show us when they're in pain. Whether it’s a sudden injury or a gradual issue like arthritis, catching the signs early can help prevent further discomfort. Here are some common indicators of pain to look out for:

🐾 Dogs: Look for whining, yelping, limping, excessive panting, restlessness, avoiding being touched, changes in appetite, or an unusual body posture. Some dogs may also become more aggressive or anxious when in pain.

🐾 Cats: Cats tend to hide their pain more subtly. Watch for changes like hiding, reduced grooming, avoiding jumping or climbing, aggression, excessive meowing or hissing, or not using the litter box. A normally active cat becoming withdrawn could also be a sign of discomfort.

If your pet is showing any of these signs, don’t wait! Contact us or your general practice clinic for an evaluation. Early detection and treatment can make a huge difference in your pet’s quality of life!

You need to hear this. (Trigger warning: su***de is discussed in this post).

Many of you won't know, but the veterinary industry is suffering under a global staff shortage. Veterinarians are exiting the industry at an alarming rate.
Why?

Here’s just one reason. Some people think it’s okay to tell a veterinarian that “You only want my money,” or “You don’t care about my animal, all you care about is money”. Some people might think those words won’t hurt. Yet every time you say these words to a veterinarian, you push them one step closer to giving up, getting out, or worse.

❗️Did you know veterinarians and veterinary staff are FOUR TIMES more likely to take their own lives, compared with the general population? Most of our team members know a veterinarian who has left the industry or committed su***de.
We understand it’s stressful when you arrive at an emergency hospital. Please remember that we are here to help. We are here because we’ve invested a lifetime learning how to care for your pet. We are not here because you need someone to blame for your unfortunate situation.

Most of our clients understand this, and we appreciate your support.
Please hear this: it takes 10 times as many positive interactions to break even from just one hurtful comment, and repetitive comments will grind down your vet to leave the industry, or worse.

Our hospital has a ZERO tolerance policy for abuse. This includes emotional, physical, and verbal abuse of any kind.

The staff at Emergency Vets 24/7 give their hearts and souls to every single patient that walks, hops, flaps, or is carried through our doors, and we stand behind every single one of them. They are phenomenal human beings, doing an exceptionally complex job in an emotionally-charged environment. They are unsung superheroes.

In a world where you can be anything, be kind.
Not One More Vet.

Thank you to everyone and please share this post to show your support and endorse our superheroes.
