Jill offers a salon-based dog grooming service in Smithfield Cairns, as well as tuition for dog owners who wish to learn how to groom their pets correctly to help them cope with the tropical climate. Smooch a Pooch is also a Professional Dog Grooming School offering coaching for

dog lovers wishing to enter the Pet Industry as a groomer. The 4-Day Professional Dog Grooming Course is also available at DGS Imports in Shailer Park, Brisbane - it is run once every 8 weeks.

Day 2 is complete.

The students have covered most of the skills now. The next 2 days of the course will be spent tweaking and honing those skills.

Today we talked about different blades and snap on attachments.

Day 2 is always Sc******ng Day. The students learn about the 5 types of scissors and how to choose the correct scissor for a specific task.
✂️
We also covered ‘The 7 Steps to Shaping a Head’.
This is their guideline to planning how to groom any dog’s head, regardless of the coat type or breed.

Everyone did incredibly well today and the dogs went home looking gorgeous 🐾😍🐾

It’s the last class for 2024 and we are ending in style...Seven enthusiastic Dog Lovers have enrolled to become Professional Groomers.

Welcome back Jaime and her dog Bu.
Jaime completed the 1-day Workshop with Bu 2 months ago and has now returned to complete the 4-day Professional course so she can offer her grooming services to Dog Care Charities. 💕😇💕 What a lovely plan.

Kirsten currently works as. Foster Carer for dogs and is planning to work as a Groomer in collaboration with a Dog Trainer.

Shannon the school teacher wants to retire from teaching and set up a home grooming salon (just as I did 14 years ago)

Tiffany is a Mum of three and wants to work from home so she doesn’t have to send the kids to daycare.

Welcome to Sharon, Chloe and Danika who are also all keen to start new grooming businesses from home.

Today we had 2 new Dog Models 🐾🐾. Thank you to Kristen the Foster Dog Carer who brought 2 little beauties Nova and Yoshi to have a free groom. 😍
Now Yoshi and Nova look amazing, so they can be advertised and hopefully find their Forever Homes 💙

November in Cairns and Smooch a Pooch welcomed 3 lovely dog owners to the 1-day Grooming Workshop.

Welcome Wendy with her 2 Maltese crosses, Wookie and Winnie

Welcome Murray with Elliot, the Shizhu x Maltese girl.
🐾
Welcome Clare with her Mini Schnauzer cross, Olly.
🐾
The Workshop is fully hands-on and the dogs get a full clip and groom.
🐾
It takes the owners about 4-5 hours to complete all the necessary skills.
🐾
Then they get access to the Online Video Training platform to review all the lessons at their leisure at home.
🐾
It’s always such a relaxed and fun day.
Each of these students came separately, but I can have two at a time.

Both ladies groomed 2 dogs today.

Darcy, our regular Tibetan terrier x Poodle model behaved really well for Heather.

Ziggy the Moodle (with some Bichon we think) came for his first modelling job 🤣 and looked incredible after Imogen had finished.

Scout and Elsa the Cavoodles came in to the salon for a short shave. Imogen and Heather helped me complete the grooms and learned all about clipping down with a 7F blade.

Well done Imogen. You will now be an incredible asset to your boss, being able to do all the grooms as well as look after all those pups in the boarding kennels.

So Jess managed to groom 2 - both Milo and Coco, who both turned up a bit matted and overdue.

Nyx and Teddy the Cavoodles were here again. They’ve been coming as models for 3 years now.

Day 3
A mixed bag of dog models today. This made the day a bit more challenging.

We had Guy the toy poodle come for the first time 😊
New models are always welcome.
Poor little Guy was so matted and overdue for a groom.
Sarah took on the challenge and did a fantastic job removing all the knots and doing her first ‘poodle cut’ on him.
His mum was delighted with the result and Guy will be coming back in December for the next course.
Well done Sarah.

Sarah’s mum Tracy groomed their own 9-month-old Shizhu, Maple. She too was a challenge with lots of knots in the coat. Maple’s puppy fur was tangled with the newly-growing adult fur, so it had to be shaved off.
Tracy left the head hair long, so that Sarah can tie it up in ‘piggy tails’ 🤣

Henry the Spoodle did his usual wiggling and whining (typical Cocker trait 🤣) and made Shantel’s grooming experience a bit challenging.

Bernadette brought her gorgeous toy poodle puppy, Queenie today.
She is only 6 months old and had her first poodle cut.

Muriel did an amazing job on Ruby the Cavoodle. She scissored her legs and head and then did a lot of blending on the body area to try and disguise Ruby’s alopaecia patches.

Jess did a lovely job on Abbey and made her face look so pretty.
Abbey’s owner asked for a short face today, so poor Jess had to cut off more hair just before Abbey went home.

These ladies are great and are picking up the skills really quickly.

We had a few naughty little doggies in the salon today and they gave 4 of the groomers a bit of a hard time

It’s always the front paws!

Meeko the young black and white Cavoodle wiggled all day. Jess did so well handling him (due to years of dog fostering experience) and she produced a really beautiful groom on him.
✅
Our 2 cheeky little, white Maltese x Shizhu girls, Rosie and Lily hid their front paws in the hope that Shantel and Muriel wouldn’t see them 🤣
Despite that, look at the beautiful faces that the ladies styles on them.

Mum and daughter team, Tracy and Sarah also have good sc******ng ability and made Emmy and Sage look gorgeous.

Miley our other Shizhu model was a bit wiggly for Bernadette but she too produced a wonderful groom.
