Holiday Safety for Dogs 🎅🐶

Attention dog owners! The holiday season is filled with treats, but not all are safe for our furry friends. Here's a list of foods to keep away from your dogs:

• Chocolate: Toxic to dogs, even in small amounts.
• Raisins, Grapes, and Sultanas: Can cause kidney failure.
• Macadamia Nuts: Harmful and potentially lethal.
• Onions: Damages red blood cells, leading to anemia.
• Nutmeg: Can cause seizures and central nervous system problems.
• Cooked Bones: They can splinter and cause internal damage.
• Christmas Ham: Too fatty and salty for dogs.
• Alcohol: Dangerous and can lead to ethanol poisoning.

Keep your pups safe and happy this festive season! 🌟

Love cats and dogs? Want to give back to your community?

Council is looking for volunteers to provide extra love and attention for the hundreds of pets that we care for at our Animal Care & Education Centre (ACE) each year.

While we do everything we can to make their time with us the best possible, extra affection never goes astray.

Providing much-needed enrichment and socialisation for the lost and surrendered pets improves their overall wellbeing and helps us to rehome them.

We have 2 roles available.

🐕 Canine Companions, who help out by:
* Walking and exercising dogs at our facility
* Socialising with the dogs
* Basic training (sit, heel)
* Pats and playtime.

🐈 Cat Cuddlers, who help out by:
* Socialising with the cats
* Grooming
* Playing
* Providing treats and other forms of affection.

😃Volunteers:
* Make social connections with like-minded individuals
* Gain valuable skills and experience to use with their own pets or to further their career prospects
* Improve their physical and mental wellbeing

Volunteers shifts are available every day for two hours in the morning or two hours in the afternoon.

🙋‍♂️If this sounds interesting, you can find out more at our ACE Volunteers Information Session:
📆 Wednesday 27 September
⏱ 5.30pm to 6.30pm

How blue is your bucket?

Do you have trouble getting your horses to drink when you take them out? You don't want them to dehydrate, especially in hot weather.

Studies have shown some horses have favourite colours, so you might find changing your bucket colour helps. And, it seems many horses prefer turquoise! :)

More:
A study mentioned by Kentucky Equine Research found that horses seem to have favourite colours and may drink more if their water bucket is the ‘right’ color.
Based on water intake, researchers found that horses preferred to drink from the turquoise buckets. Preferences for the colors, from highest to lowest, were turquoise, light blue, light green, green, yellow, and red. Horses chose the blues over other colors and light-toned colors over darker tones.
Another old horseman’s trick is to take some mud from the bank of the horse’s dam at home, and add a bit to his water so it tastes like home. A more modern version is to add a little molasses to hide the taste of the venue water. To do this you should practise at home by giving him molasses water a few times.
You can read about the horse’s favourite color research here.

We love reward training, or what the scientists call positive reinforcement.
For reward training to work, you need to add something that your horse likes. You can use a food reward or rubbing, stroking or scratching. Our PCA Rider Manuals encourage riders to work out exactly what is rewarding for each horse.
Enthusiastically slapping your horse’s neck is not reward training. Horses have extremely sensitive skin, so scratching or rubbing is far more effective than slapping.

Horses don’t pat each other in the paddock, they far prefer to scratch each other on the neck with their teeth. In fact, studies show that scratching horses’ withers lowers their heart rate. Most horses enjoy being rubbed or scratched on the neck, just below the wither. However, other horses like being scratched behind their ears or on the underside of the neck.

Why not spend half an hour with your horse and work out where he likes to be scratched the most? Let us know in the comments below, or share a photo of you using reward training.

‼️ The potentially fatal disease Canine ehrlichiosis has been detected in our region.

An autoimmune disease, Canine ehrlichiosis is transmitted though bites from brown dog ticks. Tick prevention that both kills and repels tick is therefore important to protect your pet.

Dogs that contract Canine ehrlichiosis can become very unwell 1-3 weeks after being bitten and will require vet treatment.

Symptoms can include:
* High fever, lethargy and weight loss, even if they are provided plenty of food
* Bleeding disorders including bloody noses, bleeding or bruising under the skin and bleeding into the lungs causing breathing problems
* Enlarged lymph nodes under the jaw, in front of the shoulders or in the back legs
* Eye abnormalities including discharges and cloudy eye
* Stiff legs, some dogs become lame.

Left untreated, Canine ehrlichiosis can be fatal.

✅Cairns Regional Council is proudly supporting Operation Wanted.

💰If your cat or dog isn't desexed, now's your chance to get a 20% discount thanks to the RSPCA QLD and participating vets.

🤔 Why desex your dog?

Desexing:
🐶 Reduces the desire to wander and therefore protects your pet from potential injury; being involved in attacks; and contracting diseases
🐶 Reduces the risk of cancer (female dogs)
🐶 Reduces aggression (especially in male dogs)
🐶 Reduces the number of unwanted litters.

The flight response is the instinct that keeps the horse safe from predators; it is the one that tells them to run away fast from things that frighten them.

Scientists call the part of the brain that sorts out what is scary and what isn’t the amygdala (pronounced uh·mig·duh·luh). The horse has the largest amygdala of all the large, domestic mammals.

For domestic horses the flight response is not a good thing because the more often the horse expresses the flight response the more likely he is to do it again. And, just like a snowball, the flight response can start small but gets bigger and bigger as it goes along.

Long term flight response can lead to what scientists call a state of hyper vigilance – this is when the horse seems unable to relax and startles at even very small things.

The most important thing to remember about the flight response is that it almost always involves the horse’s legs moving quickly. Therefore, gaining control of your horse’s legs is the first step in limiting the flight response and reducing stress.

Your coaches, and the manuals - the C Proficiency Manual in particular – can help show you how to control your horse’s legs with clear, consistent training so you’ll be better able to prevent and limit any expressions of the flight response, making riding much more pleasurable for you both.
(From the PCA C Manual)
