December is a wonderful time around Algester, Calamvale and Parkinson; relaxed routines, school holidays, family visits, and lots of extra outings for our pets.

But it’s also the month where we see a sharp rise in preventable emergencies.
𝗡𝗼𝘁 because owners are careless, but because December introduces risks that are easy to overlook when life gets busy.

Here are the patterns we see every single year:

• dogs overheating during short walks or backyard play
• pets getting into holiday food at gatherings
• parvo cases from dogs visiting high-traffic parks
• snake bites from long grass or nature areas
• anxious or elderly pets stressed by visitors and noise
• dogs involved in altercations at busy dog parks

These are common.
They are serious.
And they happen quickly.

Through many years of December care, one thing has become very clear:

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿.
A cooler walk time.
Extra caution with food left low.
Avoiding long grass where snakes move after rain.
Watching body language at crowded dog parks.
Providing quiet space for overwhelmed pets.
A pre-holiday health or vaccination check.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀; they are protective habits that prevent exactly the emergencies we treat every December.

As we enter the holiday season, we encourage our Algester families to stay alert, stay thoughtful, and trust your instincts.

If something feels “off,” we want to see your pet early not once things escalate.

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐞 & 𝐋𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭:
Today’s extreme temperatures put all pets at risk — dogs and cats. Keep them indoors where it’s cool, avoid outdoor exercise, and make sure they have plenty of fresh water throughout the day. Hot footpaths can burn paws in seconds, and heat stress can escalate quickly.

Even on a mild day, a parked car becomes deadly fast. In today’s heat, car temperatures can climb past 50°C in just 30 minutes. Never leave pets in the car — not even for a minute.

Stay safe, stay cool, and keep your pets protected.

When Storms Pass, Comfort Matters Most

That hailstorm caught many of us by surprise and while it’s over for us, it might not be for our pets. The sound, the flashes, even the smell of rain can trigger anxious memories for sensitive dogs and cats.

If your pet’s unsettled tonight, you’re not alone. Here’s what can help them feel safe again:

🐾𝟭. 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂.
Your pet takes cues from your energy. Stay relaxed, speak softly, and keep things as normal as possible.

🎶 𝟮. 𝗦𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀.
Play gentle music or white noise to cover the occasional rumble that might still echo outside.

🏡𝟯. 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿.
A cosy spot; under a desk, in a crate, or on your lap; helps them feel secure. Let them choose their refuge.

🦴 𝟰. 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀.
Predictability builds trust. Keep walks, dinner, and bedtime steady so they know the world is back to normal.

💬 𝟱. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀.
Storm anxiety can become a long-term fear. If your pet panics at the first drop of rain, talk to us; we can guide you through calming options or gentle therapies.

We know how much our pets look to us for safety and how much they give back in return.

🦇 No Tricks, Just Healthy Treats!

Halloween is exciting for us but it can feel a little scary for our pets.

Here are a few simple ways to keep them calm and safe this week:

👕 Try their costume early to make sure it’s comfy.
🍬 Keep sweets, glow sticks, and decorations out of reach.
🏡 Set up a quiet space if visitors or doorbells make them anxious.
🔖 Check that their ID tag and microchip details are up to date.

🐍 Brisbane 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫: 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞

Last week was very tense for our teams at MustCare Windaroo Vet and Compton Road Vet; several pets were rushed in after crossing paths with snakes.

Every single one survived, but each case was a reminder of how quickly things can change in the heat of a Queensland summer.

Snakes are part of this land; they slip through long grass and seek out cool, damp corners when the weather turns fierce. We can’t keep them out entirely, but we can stay watchful.

If your pet suddenly seems “off”, trust your instinct.

Common early signs of a snake bite include:

🐾 Weakness or unsteady walking
🐾 Shaking or trembling
🐾 Drooling or vomiting
🐾 Dilated pupils or glassy eyes
🐾 Rapid or heavy breathing
🐾 Swelling or unusual pain

Even small changes can mean something serious so don’t wait. Keep your pet calm and get to your nearest vet straight away.

🌿 Trim the grass, tidy shaded spots, and bring outdoor water bowls inside - snakes come for the same things we all do: shade and water.

🐾 Little Gizmo’s Cuddle Time 🐾

Sweet Gizmo, a 5½-year-old Shih Tzu cross, got plenty of love from Nurse Kirsten before her visit with the vet.
She soaked up every cuddle and tail wag, reminding us how important gentle reassurance can be.

At MustCare Algester Vets, we do everything we can to make our patients feel safe and comfortable every step of the way. 🐶

🐶 Say Hello to Lima 🐶

This beautiful Cavoodle, Lima, won everyone over with her charm! She came in feeling a little unsure, but quickly decided that cuddles (and gentle ear scratches) were the best kind of comfort.

🐾 Bella’s Big Day 🐾

Meet Bella, a beautiful 5-year-old Domestic Short Hair who spent some time with us recently. She came in feeling a little nervous (as many cats do!), but with gentle words, soft blankets, and calm reassurance, she soon settled in.

Bella was such a star patient, and we’re so happy to see her recovering well and back to her usual cuddly self.
