Colic is a general term to describe abdominal pain and as such encompasses a wide variety medical and surgical conditions that affect the digestive system of horses.
Common signs of colic include restlessness, sweating, pawing the ground, rolling, reluctant to eat or drink.

In this video Tony explains what colic is, what the signs are and what you need to do if you suspect your horse has colic.

Meet Dude, a 15-year-old pony who recently made his way to the Sunshine Coast from North Queensland to serve as a paddock companion. Upon arrival, it was noticed that his right eye was persistently weeping. Dr. Tony examined him and discovered a significant squamous cell carcinoma covering approximately two-thirds of his lower eyelid.

Dude, like fair-skinned people, lacks pigmentation around his eyes, making him more vulnerable to sun-related skin cancers. Given the size and location of the tumor, surgical removal was the best option to avoid potential loss of the eye. However, this procedure posed a challenge: removing the tumor meant reconstructing the lower eyelid to prevent tear overflow, dryness, and discomfort.

Dude underwent surgery under general anesthesia. Approximately two-thirds of the lower eyelid, a strip measuring 2.5cm by 0.7cm, was removed. Fortunately, the underlying conjunctiva (the lining of the eye socket) and the third eyelid were healthy and intact. To repair the sizeable defect, a flap of skin from below the incision was carefully repositioned and sutured into place, forming a new lower eyelid—a bit like a mini facelift for Dude.

The surgery was a success! Dude has recovered well, and his new eyelid is functioning perfectly. There’s no tear overflow, and his eye remains healthy and well-lubricated. We are confident that the entire tumor was removed, reducing the risk of recurrence.

From now on, Dude will wear a face mask or other sun protection to shield his non-pigmented areas from harmful UV rays. Thanks to the team’s careful work, Dude is back to enjoying life, looking sharp with his new "shades."

Adam, a horse presenting with swelling in his left hind leg, came to us after initial treatment elsewhere had not resolved the issue. It was suspected that he had been kicked in the paddock, leading to the injury. Despite being advised to rest for 6–8 weeks, there was no significant healing.

Upon examination, it was determined that the lower 10cm of Adam's lateral splint bone (4th metatarsal) required removal. This bone, located on the outside of the cannon, carries less load than the medial splint bone (2nd metatarsal) and can be safely reduced by up to 65% without compromising stability. In Adam's case, the total splint bone length was 22cm, making the procedure both necessary and feasible.

Splint bone fractures often heal with a fibrous callus rather than a bony one, which can leave the distal portion unstable. This instability can irritate surrounding tissue and potentially lead to suspensory desmitis (inflammation of the suspensory ligament). Removal of the damaged section eliminates this source of irritation.

Following the surgery, Adam will have staples removed in 12–14 days and undertake 3–4 weeks of stable rest. Training or work can typically resume about 6 weeks post-surgery, setting Adam on the path to full recovery.

Meet Tim, a 17-year-old Quarter Horse gelding who has been struggling with ongoing lameness in his right front foot for over six months. Despite several veterinary evaluations, the owner suspected an abscess and possibly some seedy toe. Upon presentation, we noted a hole in the lateral sole from a previous attempt to drain an abscess.

During the examination, Tim was lame at the trot and sensitive to hoof testers, yet he could walk and bear weight on the foot. A complete set of radiographs revealed that the seedy toe was superficial. However, we did identify some underrun areas and foreign material under the sole extending to the heel.

Further opening of the hole exposed multiple layers of solar tissue and bruising, indicating a long-standing issue. Upon careful examination, we discovered a healthy new sole underneath. We removed the overlying separated sole back to the healthy tissue, revealing good integrity with the underlying soft tissue. We also found a tract at the heel where an abscess had previously burst (see image below of forceps inserted into tract to highlight).

We removed the entire lateral half of the sole, from toe to heel, as it was completely separated from the underlying tissue, evidenced by the absence of bleeding and Tim's lack of pain during the procedure. Given that this was a long-standing condition, the new sole was relatively hard and will continue to harden over the coming week.

This hardening process can be enhanced by bandaging initially with yellow lotion and then with strong iodine. It's crucial to keep the foot clean and bandaged until the new sole hardens sufficiently, allowing for normal hoof-pick pressure without any reaction from Tim.

Tim's prolonged issue stems from either incomplete drainage of the initial abscess or more likely it was not kept covered which allowed dirt and bacteria to access the hole which then sealed over and in a few weeks formed another abscess. This is a common mistake people make when dealing with foot abscesses. It is not simply enough to open and drain them - aftercare and bandaging are vital. Watch this page for an upcoming feature on foot abscesses and how to deal with them.

This beautiful little pony presented with a receding gum line and discoloration of the front teeth. After a thorough examination, we suspected tooth root damage and infection and recommended extraction. X-rays confirmed that the tooth roots were damaged and being resorbed by the body, likely due to trauma or an impact to the teeth.

He was placed under general anaesthetic at our clinic, allowing for a quick and painless extraction of the affected teeth.

This little fellow will feel much better now that the problematic incisors have been removed. As with humans, dental pain can be severe, but with proper post-operative care, the mouth heals quickly. Although these were permanent teeth, the pony will adjust just fine once he has recovered.
