A strong foundation starts with healthy hooves. Poor hoof care can lead to discomfort, poor performance, and long-term lameness issues.

โœ” Pick out hooves daily to check for stones, cracks, or infections
โœ” Schedule regular farrier visits to maintain balance
โœ” Monitor for lamenessโ€”early detection is key
โœ” Be mindful of laminitis risks, especially in summer

Need a lameness assessment? Our vets work closely with farriers to keep your horse sound.

An abscess in a horseโ€™s hoof can cause sudden lameness, often leaving owners concerned. Abscesses are typically caused by bacteria entering through small cracks or injuries in the hoof, leading to a build-up of pressure as the infection grows.

Signs of an Abscess:
โ€ข Sudden lameness or reluctance to bear weight
โ€ข Heat in the hoof or lower leg
โ€ข Increased digital pulse

What to Do:
โ€ข Contact your vet or farrier for advice
โ€ข Soak the hoof in warm water with Epsom salts to encourage drainage
โ€ข Keep the hoof clean and bandaged if necessary

Avoid digging into the hoof yourself - itโ€™s always best to leave treatment to the professionals.

Vaccinations play a critical role in safeguarding your horseโ€™s health, helping to protect against preventable diseases and illnesses. By stimulating the immune system, vaccines enable your horse to recognise, fight, and defend itself against potentially deadly diseases.

Not only can vaccinations reduce the severity of symptoms if your horse becomes infected, but they also help protect other horses on your property, reducing the spread of disease. Vacinating is an essential part of your horse's overall health and well-being and should never be overlooked.

Pedro and Pablo, two adorable mini mules, recently visited us for castration as they were becoming a bit too boisterous. Despite Pedroโ€™s name being inspired by a well-known "Narco" character, heโ€™s not the one with the white around his nose!

Siracha, a spirited miniature horse, recently visited Sunshine Coast Equine Veterinary Clinic for a complex dental issue. Despite his small size, he proved to be quite the handful during sedation and examination.

Referred by a lay dentist, Siracha presented with severely overgrown rear molarsโ€”one of the most extreme cases we've ever encountered. The last molar in his lower arcade was so overgrown that it was impossible to use a standard rasp or motorised dental float to address the issue.

Thankfully, our state-of-the-art power float, equipped with an apple-core head, was perfect for the job. This specialised tool allowed us to approach the overgrown tooth from the front (cranial aspect) and carefully grind it back to the appropriate levelโ€”all while Siracha remained standing. Remarkably, he required as much sedation as a horse two to three times his size. What a tough little gent!

The attached images show little Siracha and also the special apple core dental float.

Maya, a mini donkey, was referred to Sunshine Coast Equine Veterinary Clinic due to recurring lameness in her left forelimb. Her farrier raised concerns about possible laminitis.

Upon examination, Maya was reactive to hoof testers. However, radiographs revealed no significant findings, including no evidence of rotation. Further investigation uncovered moderate mud and debris trapped high up in the white line at the quarters. This debris was pressing on the sensitive laminae, causing pain and resulting in lameness.

Treatment included poulticing the affected hoof for 48 hours to draw out any remaining debris. Once the area is dried and hardened, it will be kept bandaged until it becomes non-reactive to pressure.

This condition is unusual in donkeys, which typically have small, hard hooves and rarely experience abscesses or laminitis. The recent, extremely wet, weather likely contributed to the softening of Mayaโ€™s hooves and a slight separation of the hoof wall along the white line, creating an entry point for mud and debris.

Donkeys are naturally adapted to dry, arid environments and are known for their resilience. In fact, they rank second only to camels in their ability to survive in arid conditions and withstand significant dehydration without ill effects.

Maya is pictured on the left, alongside her loyal traveling buddy.

Koa, a 14-month-old mini horse weighing approximately 50kg, recently presented for castration. However, he was diagnosed as a rig (cryptorchid) due to one retained te**is, which required surgical intervention.

Recently, Koaโ€™s behavior had become problematic around mares and fillies, making the procedure necessary. The retained te**is, located in the abdomen, required a full general anesthetic to locate and remove safely. This was expertly handled by Dr. Taylor Bunworth, who managed the clinical challenges and potential complications associated with anesthetising a horse of Koaโ€™s size.

To prevent the risk of evisceration (intestinal prolapse), a potential complication in ponies and minis due to their large inguinal canal, a closed castration technique was used. The inguinal ring and canal were also surgically closed to eliminate this risk.

Interestingly, rigs often have a higher s*x drive because the retained te**is, being internal, is exposed to higher temperatures, which renders it infertile but still hormonally active.

The complexity of this procedure varies depending on the location of the retained te**is - it can be just under the skin, in the canal, or even as high as the kidney where it originates during embryonic development. Every case truly is unique!

Koa is recovering well and should now be much calmer around his equine companions.

Common signs of colic include restlessness, sweating, pawing the ground, rolling, reluctant to eat or drink.
