Not all surgeries need scalpels and stitches. At Sunshine Coast Equine Veterinary Clinic, we’re using advanced CO₂ laser technology to treat a range of soft tissue conditions - all while keeping horses more comfortable and recovery times shorter.

Laser surgery allows us to:
• Perform procedures under standing sedation
• Minimise bleeding and swelling
• Reduce post-op pain
• Speed up healing
• Lower the risk of complications

It’s ideal for everything from skin lesion removal to upper airway surgery - and it’s all done right here at our Sunshine Coast clinic.

If your horse needs a soft tissue procedure, ask us whether laser surgery is a suitable option.

Call 07 5491 6719 or email [email protected] to find out more.

After months of wet weather, we’re seeing a spike in hoof abscesses – and if your horse is suddenly lame, reluctant to walk, or constantly shifting weight, this could be the cause.

Soggy ground softens the hoof, making it easier for bacteria to sneak in and cause painful abscesses. Thankfully, they’re usually treatable – and our team can diagnose, drain and manage the issue quickly and comfortably.

We also work closely with farriers to reduce the risk of recurrence through supportive shoeing and hoof care.

If you suspect a hoof abscess, don’t wait. Call us on 07 5491 6719 or email [email protected] for help.

A first for the Sunshine Coast: Laser surgery for equine sarcoids.

Sarcoids are the most common skin tumour in horses - and until now, treatment options have been limited and often frustrating.

We’re proud to announce that Sunshine Coast Equine Veterinary Clinic is the first and only equine practice on the Coast to offer surgical laser treatment. Our new CO₂ laser allows us to remove sarcoids cleanly and safely under sedation, reducing bleeding, minimising pain, speeding up healing, and most importantly, significantly lowering the risk of recurrence.

Alice, a Thoroughbred mare with a large, rapidly growing sarcoid, was our first laser surgery patient. Her recovery was smooth, pain-free, and complication-free.

This technology also has broader applications, including the treatment of upper respiratory tract conditions, all without the need for a general anaesthetic.

A persistent cough, nasal discharge, or difficulty breathing? Your horse may have a respiratory issue. Common causes include:

• Allergies (dust, mould, or pollen)
• Infections (bacterial or viral)
• Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) – common in performance horses

A quick check-up, endoscopy, or lung function test can identify the cause and get your horse back to full health. Book an exam today: 07 5491 6719.

20/05/2025

Strangles is a disease of the upper respiratory system and the lymph nodes of the head. It is caused by the organism Streptococcus equi. It rapidly spreads from horse to horse through coughing, or by the horse eating or drinking infective droplets. The discharge may remain infectious for over a month.

Within 3–8 days of becoming infected, the horse will show a fever (39.5–40.5°C). The throat and larynx become so extremely inflamed that swallowing food or water becomes very painful or impossible. The lymph nodes of the head become swollen and very painful, and may eventually burst and discharge a thick creamy yellow pus.

If you suspect strangles:
- Contact your veterinarian immediately
- Cease all horse movement on and off the property
- Avoid introducing new horses
- Monitor all horses’ temperatures daily
- Isolate any horse with a fever promptly - they may begin shedding the bacteria 1–2 days before other symptoms appear.

Vaccination is available in Australia and should be used in conjunction with good biosecurity and early detection measures.

Contact us for more information about protecting your horses from Strangles.
