IT IS said many a great tale has started with the term "hold my beer"!
The problem is, the story usually concludes with a form of regret due to a disastrous result.
For Mark Tiedemann, however, that beer moment has led to years of enjoyment within harness racing.
Relaxing with a cold one while camping, Tiedemann was asked to venture into standardbred ownership, but declined numerous times.
After that 'one last beer', Tiedemann changed his answer to "yes".
"I was sitting on a chair outside a caravan and kept saying 'no'," Tiedemann recalled. "Then I had one more beer.
"After that extra drink I folded and said 'yes, why not, let's have a crack!
"Before I knew it I had shares in a mare named Kotiro."
Winning six of her 37 starts, with six placings also to her credit, Kotiro was eventually retired, with Tiedemann and his co-owners deciding to breed from the daughter of Changeover.
The crew - consisting of Tiedemann, Laurie Strickland, Brendan, John and Paul Micallef - sent Kotiro to the court of Ohoka Punter, which produced a c**t later named Tamatine Tane.
Third upon debut last December, Tamatine Tane scored in Newcastle at his only other start on January 10.
"We won a free service to Ohoka Punter, so we decided to use it," Brendan said. "He's only had two starts and shown a bit of promise.
"We kept her first foal for a bit of fun and sentimental reasons, but now we're looking at heading into commercial breeding so we want to get the foals out there and the mares' names known."
Kotiro's second foal is a c**t by Dancing Lou, which is scheduled to enter the Nutrien Sales Ring in Queensland as Lot 46 on February 23.
The handsome bay comes from a family crammed with high class performers, including Group One winners Whanau, Lento and Mister Smartee.
"Kotiro was our first broodmare, but now Brendan and I have 10 between us," Tiedemann said. "Looking back it all started from having that extra beer.
"I have to say though, I don't regret that other beer as I have had a great time.
"I enjoyed her racing and now we are leaning towards the breeding side, which is quite pleasing."
For those heading to the sales, Tiedemann has offered some advice whether it's for bidding on his yearling or any other Lots.
"I recommend that if you're thinking of buying at the yearling sales, attend the bar first," Tiedemann said. "It'll help with the bidding process

GAINING his initiation to harness racing like so many before and after him, Robert Ross has experienced most aspects of the industry throughout the years.
First was ownership via his brother, Tony, then came breeding from broodmares and even standing a couple of stallions, including former injury-plagued star Getting It Right.
In recent years, Ross' passion for breeding has led to a focus on his broodmare band, which has increased to "20-odd!"
"My brother had horses as he married into industry and the studs side of things via the Hando family," Ross said. "I got a horse from him and it went from there.
"Eventually after racing I thought I'd get into the breeding side.
"I started pottering around with a couple of mares and even stood my own stallions as a way of trying to get into breeding on the cheaper side rather than pay service fees..
"Getting It Right was a pure gentleman and I had a bit of success with him, but he never really got top mares.
"I've got no doubt he would do a lot better with the sort of mares I have now.
"Surprisingly, he has been a good broodmare sire with Art Major mares and has got a couple which have earned over $100,000."
Making the decision to focus on a more commercial-orientated breeding regime, Ross worked on not only increasing his broodmare numbers, but also the quality of their bloodlines.
"I've been breeding for eight or 10 years and decided to go more commercially for the past three," Ross said.
"I have 20-odd mares and hand pick five or six a year to breed from.
"I breed the mares every second year with a real concentration on strong families
"I still race a couple as we will retain a filly if the dam is getting old for breeding on purposes, but we mainly sell off."
That leads Ross to the Nutrien Yearling Sale in Queensland, with his operation - Rosswood Stud - offering a c**t and two fillies on February 23.
Darren Reay from Medowie Stud will take the youngster north in preparation for the ring.
A c**t by Inter Dominion winner Tiger Tara is Ross' first Lot and will go under the hammer a 49.
From Lombo Portrait, the c**t hails from the same family as Soho Burning Love, Sunny Sanz, Lombo Adreamin and Colby Sanz.
Ross will then offer fillies as Lots 56 and 77.
A daughter of Capt Midnight and Miraculous Luck, 56 is related to the likes of Hezarealgem, Muscle Factory, Muscle Bart, Strong Don, Majestic Mach and Masked Crusader.
Lot 77 is also by Capt Midnight from Saywhatonethinks, which is from a clan including Son Of Rayson, Whipair, By My Side, Next Bonus and Brallos Pass.

Medowie lodge was named in honour of this super tough horse..

For today’s Throwback Thursday we look back on this day back in 1991.

Our fine picture shows smart pacer Medowie Prince returning after winning the Penrith Dress Circle Pace Final on this day, 28 November, back in 1991.

With trainer Keith McDeed at the reins, Medowie Prince raced against the best and had an impressive record.

By What’s Next USA out of Concise, he was bred by Tom Reay.

Having 103 race starts, Medowie Prince won 33 races. With 14 second placings and seven third places as well, he won $198,510.

His career highlight was winning the 1993 Newcastle Re-Car Invitational Mile with Chris Gleeson at the reins.

Stopping the clock at 1:56.6, he defeated Weona Warrior and Band Magic.

Other feature wins included the 1994 Bohemia Crystal Free-For-All over Ultra Jet USA at Harold Park and the 1995 Winter Cup at Geelong in Victoria.

A proud moment in our rich harness racing’s history.
