Day One- Hunt and play development
Play can be a powerful tool in dog training. Not only can it be a strong reinforcer but it can and also be an effective way to strengthen the relation and communication between you and your dog. At the same time play can cause conflicts if we do it in the wrong way. Problems with ”out” or dogs who refuse to come back with the toy are two of most common examples. During this seminar we go through all the different parts of play development that is needed to create an highly motivating play without conflicts. We start with chasing games and go all the way to social play and different ways of training the dog to come back with the toy and release on cue.

Day Two- Foundations for detection and tracking
This seminar gives you a good insight in how you train a strong and reliable foundation for both detection and tracking dogs. We start with search development where we focus on increasing the dogs motivation for searching. We introduce simple exercises where we mix play with search in different environments. In the next step with continue with different methods and principles to train the dog to do a more detailed search with high sniffing frequency. The second part of the seminar is all about different ways of training a solid and focused passive indication.

Ticket sales are now open for Dr. Michelle’s newest seminar focusing on everything you need to know about the most common mental health condition affecting dogs - anxiety.
Starting with the nervous system, we’ll explore how the brain works, how anxiety can occur neurologically, and what effects it can have on mind, body and behaviour.

Origins of anxiety, and why you need to understand it.
The nervous system and how memory works
Medications and their role
Repetitive disorders
Separation disorders
Noise aversions + phobias
Case studies

As a veterinarian with a wealth of training experience, Dr. Michelle will talk through some of the causes of anxiety disorders, as well as possible management and treatment plans. We’ll explore some of the current scientific information around these conditions, and the crucial role of the trainer in changing behaviour for dogs with mental health challenges. You’ll learn to identify signs that behavioural modification is being hampered by the neural system in overdrive, as well as signs a medication plan could be helpful. We’ll cover real life case studies of things that have gone well, as well as the reality of cases that have been tough to manage.

Whether you own a dog with mental health challenges, work as a professional coaching others who need support in addressing anxiety in a dog, or are a veterinary professional that wants to better understand aspects of behavioural illness in dogs, this one’s for you!

This seminar is aimed at pet professionals, vet professionals or dedicated dog owners

The working dog spots really make the a workshop something special.
Having the privilege of watching another team working through a challenge is huge.
You all offer us the opportunity to see the details we often can’t see when we are the ones being coached.
Your vulnerability and generosity of offering up your work for us to learn from is so valued.

And the dogs are always the stars of the show! (Sorry Avery! 😂)
Io, Finley, Millie, Miku, and Que, you were all the best doggos!
Thanks for keeping us humble.

The next instalment in this year’s lineup of inspiring dog training educators is Conservation Detection Dog handler, Avery Keller.
Dropping in to the Campus between adventures with their incredible working dog team in the Australian forests and bushland searching for koala, and hunting for invasive weeds, they are, to those of us who care deeply for our environment, bloody legends!

Avery is going to romance us with stories of the wonder that is canine olfaction.
They will share with us their knowledge of the mysteries of odour and the way it behaves.
They will talk about your dogs relationship with this powerful invisible force and how from pet dogs, to scent work enthusiasts all the way to teams currently working in the field, we can be working more in tune with your dogs natural drives.

Scent detection, from a mindful tool for enrichment all the way to the serious work, of saving lives, solving crimes or protecting the environment, come along and learn from Avery’s passion for this important work.

Hosting is such a pleasure.
We approached Pat nearly a year ago to put together content for a one day presentation specifically focused on developing the handlers skills. And boy did he deliver!

The content was fresh, fun and grounded in Pat’s special skill of understanding the concepts he teaches so intimately and in such incredible detail, that he can share his insights with ease.

He brings such warmth, humility and humour to his interactions with his audience.

It was a beautiful mild day in Canberra, the audience were a friendly bunch, delivered (again) on the tasty burger front and the conversation over beers at the pub after the workshop was what you’d expect from a bunch of boozy dog geeks. Bloody brilliant!

Thanks again to .culture.emporium for the gifts bags full of dog treasures and the trusty Crew who helped us make the day run smoothly.

Stay tuned for our next exciting educational instalment at The Canine Campus!

Warmest thanks to our dear friend Sharonika for kicking off our big calendar of dog training events on Sunday with her workshop “In the details”.

Some last minute tickets sales drew us a nice group of diverse dog folk all coming to lean it to some new understandings and fresh takes on learning with dogs.

“In the details”- focused in on Criteria and how the attention we pay to the smaller details is what builds a strong obedience behaviours.

It reminds us if aren’t clear on what we want to teach, our dog can’t be clear on what they are learning.

We had six amazing teams putting themselves up to be coached in front of our audience, something we are always so grateful for. The valuable learning we all gain from watching you all work through challenges is impossible to measure!
Thank you all so much for sharing your journey with us!

Sharonika shines as a kind insightful coach who, with gentle persistence, guides her learners towards their goals. She has a keen eye and can always see details that can empower her teams to move forward in their dog training experience.

Our first event went pretty smoothly overall, although we still took plenty of notes to tweak details for our next event.

Thanks to our wonderful TCC crew, Josh, Bones, (and me and Luci), we were so ready to just “roll with it” as we write the script for the “how are we going to do this” as we go!

One thing for sure, lunch was a hit.
Thanks for fuelling the dog nerding for the day.

Cheers .culture.emporium for the goodie bags for all good doggos who stayed home. We hope you enjoyed your treatos.

And lastly, and always most importantly, thanks to the dogs.
Thanks for keeping it real.
