Hey Canberra pet owners! 🐾
The PAWS Network ACT is a free, helpful, easy to navigate resource for pet assistance and services in our community.

The primary goal is to serve as an online directory for pet-related charities and services in the Canberra region, connecting owners with pet support, financial or otherwise. The project has grown to include so much more, including info and resources for emergency boarding or rehoming, info on owning a pet in Canberra and a directory of clinics and services in the ACT and surrounds. 😻

PAWS Network ACT offers accessible information and assistance for pet owners in Canberra and surrounds, as well as general information to improve your knowledge and your pet's wellbeing.

~ NEW CAT LAWS- 1st July 2022~

As many of you may be aware new legislation regarding cats has recently passed, coming into effect 1st July 2022.

We've had a lot of people looking after street cats that have become concerned about the laws so we wanted to clarify what rules apply to different cats, based on when they were born.

📅 If your cat was born BEFORE 1st July 2022 it does not need to be contained unless it lives in a cat containment suburb. If your cat was born AFTER 1st July 2022, it must be contained regardless of where in the ACT it lives.

✏️ ALL cats need to be registered regardless of when they were born.

💰 For cats born before 1st July 2022, registration is free as long as you do it before 1st July 2023. For cats born after 1st July 2022 there is a fee.

⚕️ ALL cats must be microchipped and desexed. The requirement to have cats over 3 months of age desexed is not new and has been the law since 2001 (so over 20 years).

A reminder that as part of the ACT Cat Plan, all cats aged 8+ weeks must be registered. The registration process is now open.

All ACT cats currently alive, i.e. born before 1st July 2022 can be registered for free until 1 July 2023. In the future, to register a cat born after 1st July 2022 a fee will have to be paid. This fee is $57.55 or $20.70 for concession card holders.

We've tested the registration process tonight with some of our own personal cats and a few things to point out.
Edit: You may need to search to find cat-specific colour options such as tabby or tortoiseshell. When we were testing with our own cats these options were not immediately clear so take some time to find the best way to describe the coat colour of your cat.

The form does not require you to put in the microchip details of your cat, however if you don't put in the microchip details if this is anything like the dog registration system you are likely to get an email from Domestic Animal Services in the future asking for the microchip number. So we encourage owners first to find their cats' microchip number and input that while registering the cat.

Although this new cat registration system has been touted as being important for reuniting lost pets, the most important thing pet owners can do to make sure they will get a call in the event that their pet goes missing and is found is to keep their microchip details up to date.

Even if your cat is registered, if it's picked up by a member of the public and taken to a vet it can only be reunited if the microchip details are up to date (regardless of whether the register details are up to date or not).

If you know your cat's microchip number you can check it on http://www.petaddress.com.au/ to see what register it is on if you are not sure. If it does not show up on any of the petadress listed registers the most common reason is that is on the NSW register, in which case we strongly encourage you to add your pet's microchip details on one of the national microchip registers such as Australasian Animal Register.

https://form.act.gov.au/smartforms/servlet/SmartForm.html?formCode=1621

Simply type the microchip number in the search field; then click to search. If your number is found in one of the databases you will be directed to the database for further information.

New laws for cat containment and cat registration! The ACT Government has passed new laws to help Canberra’s cats live longer and healthier lives, while better protecting native wildlife.

From 1 July 2022 all cats will be required to be registered, with details to be updated annually. This will help reunite lost cats with their families more quickly by having up-to-date contact details.

For more information go to: http://www.cityservices.act.gov.au/cats and to register your cat go to https://form.act.gov.au/smartforms/servlet/SmartForm.html?formCode=1621
