Make a submission to the ACT’s new draft kangaroo management plan! 📝

When we posted about the new draft Kanagroo Management Plan being open for consultation, we received some comments asking for some guidance on making a submission 🦘

So we have put together a template with a small sample of the key recommendations that Save Canberra’s Kangaroos will be making in our submission, so that you can make one too! Because we know not everyone has the time to thoroughly review the 100+ page draft plan 😅

Head to the link below to make your submission using our template! You will need to edit it before you can hit send to make sure it is a unique submission.

https://savecanberraskangaroos.good.do/savecanberraskangaroos/KMPsubmission/

Some things you could add:

- Have you ever waited an extensive amount of time for a ranger to attend an injured kangaroo?
- Do you want to see wildlife carers be able to rescue and rehabilitate eastern grey kangaroos and their joeys?
- Do you have concerns about the ACT Government’s kangaroo population estimates/counting methods?
- Can you think of positive things other states are doing for kangaroos that you would like to see here?

Remember to keep your submission respectful and focus on how we can get better outcomes for kangaroos 🙏🏼

If you have any questions for us, just leave a comment and we will get back to you!

BOUQUETS AND BRICKBATS
How's this for irony?
The NSW Government, following the shocking and disturbing report 'Licence to Kill' by Humane World for Animals is holding an inquiry into the horrific scale of killing wildlife by landholders. The inquiry is being chaired by Animal Justice Party MP Emma Hurst. https://nsw.animaljusticeparty.org/licences-to-harm-submission-guide
In all states of Australia, landholders can simply submit a form claiming that kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, cockatoos and almost any other native animal is damaging their property, eating their crop, wrecking their fences - and they'll be given approval by state government authorities to KILL without any verification of damage required. An estimated four million animals and birds are killed every year.
Well done NSW MPs for holding this inquiry! And let's hope that positive changes are recommended and implemented.

In contrast, the ACT Government is seeking submissions on their latest Kangaroo Management Plan, which, in effect, gives the ACT Government the right to KILL eastern grey kangaroos year after year. If you object to this heinous treatment of eastern greys, please lodge your submission by 18 December. https://www.legislation.act.gov.au/ni/2025-604/

Revealed under FOI - not even kangaroos who have been fertility treated are safe from ACT Government shooters 💔

Each year after the shooting has finished, we submit an FOI request to the ACT Government to receive copies of the shooters ‘operational reports’ from each night of shooting. It is through these documents that we found out about the shooting of wallabies in Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary and also about the butchering of kangaroos happening in our nature reserves 😣

This year’s reports reveal that on TWO occasions the ACT Government shooters had shot kangaroos with ear tags who had been treated with Gonacon (fertility control). The ACT Government tells us that Gonacon will reduce the need for large “culls” but how can that be when their own shooters are killing these kangaroos anyways?!

The ACT Government also tells us that their shooters are extremely accurate but clearly that’s not the case when they have shot not one, but two kangaroos with ear tags 😡

These poor kangaroos subjected to a science experiment where their fertility was stolen from them and then were shot and killed anyways.

‼️ New draft “Kangaroo Management Plan” has been released for public comment.

The Conservator of Flora and Fauna has just issued the new draft “Buru - Eastern Grey Kangaroo - Draft Controlled Native Species Management Plan 2025”.

This is on the back of the recommendations made by Professor Sarah Legge, who SCK met with and provided feedback to back in 2023.

SCK intends to make a submission and encourages others to do so. There is a lot to read through!

Submissions on the draft plan can be submitted to this email: [email protected]

Link to the draft plan is here: https://www.legislation.act.gov.au/ni/2025-604/

Some mindless fool thought it was OK to shoot and kill a mother kangaroo. One of his bullets also hit her tiny joey. Somehow, this joey was rescued and the bullet removed. From this traumatic start to life, this little joey was cared for around the clock to give her a chance at life.
She had some health issues along the way but her human carers remained devoted to her and ensured she had the best possible care. She had two buddies - other joeys who had also become orphans due to the actions of unthinking people. They remained bonded until the end.
Poppy eventually made it to 'soft release' with her buddies. She was part of a little mob of 10 other joeys. She started to venture out of her bag more, loved to graze and never missed her bottle of milk. She made friends with the other joeys. Sometimes, bigger joeys would try and nudge her off her bottle, but she would cling on, staying focussed on finishing her bottle, as if her life depended on it.
She melted everyone's hearts - such a little joey who just wanted to live her best kangaroo life.
Perhaps it was the initial trauma that sowed the seeds of overwhelming health problems. We don't know. But her health began to decline, despite her best efforts to carry on.
Blood and urine tests confirmed renal failure. Her carers knew the only kind thing was to let her go.
Comforting words were offered..."She's had a lovely little life." And "Many animals die a much harder death." Very true. Poppy was surrounded by kind humans and many tears were shed for her.

Do mindless fools ever contemplate the cruelty they inflict? Probably not.
