Who has gone to the trouble and expense of erecting this new fence (complete with barbed wire) in....a Canberra nature reserve??? Surely the ACT Government is not using livestock fencing to keep the native inhabitants of this reserve safe?
No...of course not....it's all about the cattle! (Hopefully they'll graze down that unsightly St John's Wort) which no one seems concerned about.

Food for thought from Tamara Kenneally Photography - the message is simple: please don't buy kangaroo ''meat'' or other ''products'' for your pets (or for yourself). 🦘💔

Whilst you are standing in the pet food aisle at the supermarket and you are trying to choose between all the new and booming selection of kangaroo food and treats, please stop and think. Every time you put a kangaroo meat product in to your trolley you are endorsing and supporting the relentless hunting and incredibly cruel slaughter of these beautiful animals every single night. You are saying yes to their terror. You are saying yes to ripping families apart. You are saying yes to wiping out our unique wildlife from this country. You are saying yes to joeys like the one in this image having their head bashed against the ground or a bullbar to kill him
or her. You are saying yes to injured shot kangaroos suffering for days and weeks from injuries and dying in prolonged agony. You are saying yes to orphaned joeys being released back in to the wild after being brought up by dedicated carers only to be shot by hunters.

Please don't say yes to any of this. Stop and think.

Kangaroo - the movie - coming in 2025, set in Alice Springs and inspired by Chris Barnes who rescues and raises kangaroo joeys. Something uplifting for a change! ❤🦘

Kangaroo is set and filmed in Alice Springs and Sydney, and inspired by the life of Chris 'Brolga' Barns.

Kangaroos have grazed freely on this land, just outside the ACT, for decades. They cause no damage to the grassy layer. They have not "over populated."
They live in complete harmony with all other native wildlife (and also with some introduced animals, including a couple of humans who have found their way into their territory.)
They are a joy to watch as they go about their business - bringing up their joeys and living in their family groups. As our nearest neighbours, they are second to none - quiet, peaceful and gentle.
This will be a familiar story to those who also live with - and near - kangaroos who are allowed to live in peace and safe from harm.

So...who owns the black angus cattle grazing on Goorooyarroo Nature Reserve? This 829 hectare reserve which adjoins the Federal Highway just north of Canberra has been the site of many massacres of thousands of kangaroos and joeys over the past 14 years. You can walk for over two hours through Goorooyarroo these days and not see a kangaroo.
But you can drive by and see cattle in an instant!
Could this sign be the explanation...."ecological grazing''....the cattle, rest assured, dear readers, are there to assist the golden sun moths in their "time of need." (They need the grasses short so they can find a mate.)
So over 5,000 kangaroos and joeys have been slaughtered there for allegedly "over grazing"....so...the cattle get it just right???
(Just picturing boy golden sun moth finding girl golden sun moth and then, SPLAT!! Cow pat ends the romance before it begins!) 💔💔💔 Suzanne Orr

The vast majority of small marsupials and other mammals native to Australia that have gone extinct, have disappeared forever because of land clearing and hunting since colonisation and the introduction by humans of cats and foxes.
Until governments and their bureaucrats deal with this crisis, tax payer enabled and funded slaughter of native animals should cease.
We have form. Our record is abysmal. 💔💔💔

WILDLIFE AND FIREWORKS 🎆

Fireworks and other loud noises not only scare pets, but also our wildlife. With celebrations across the state, many animals will be spooked by the loud noises, especially the fireworks. They may seek shelter in unusual spots or may flee onto roads to try to get away from the loud noises.

As you prepare to celebrate the new year, please keep wildlife in mind. Please take extra care on the roads and should you find animals needing assistance in the days following, please call a local wildlife rescue organisation.

Wildlife Rescuers would like to wish you all a safe and happy new year.

Over the Christmas holidays, please take time to sign this petition to better protect all wildlife. This report by Humane Society International is truly shocking. Change must happen and we must put real pressure on our politicians, many of whom are completely clueless about the slaughter going on in the name of their own governments at both state/territory and Federal level. 💔💔💔

Join us in urging state and territory Environment and Agricultural Ministers to stop allowing the killing of native wildlife.

When is a nature reserve not a nature reserve?
When it's a cow paddock!

First, erect a new farm fence complete with barbed wire, hazardous to wildlife.

Then kill hundreds of kangaroos and joeys to make way for cattle. Then claim that cattle are needed to graze down the long non-native grasses. (So, why weren't the kangaroos required to continue grazing the long native grasses?)

And then claim it's all about saving the endangered grassland species like earless dragons and legless lizards.

How good are these cow pats for these guys? (Sorry about the ugly photo. Glad you didn't tread on that, Rebecca!).

In 2022, two Canberrans, who had spent years bush walking in the nature reserves, were incredulous at claims by the ACT Environment Directorate that eastern grey kangaroos were "over abundant" in Canberra's 37 reserves.
They began a systematic 8-month long citizen science project, searching all 37 reserves - on multiple occasions, walking 1500 kms - counting every kangaroo they saw. They were not conducting a census; they were seeking to find any evidence of "over abundance."
By the Directorate's own calculation that one kangaroo per hectare was the desired population density, they found that in 80% of reserves kangaroos were under this ratio. In the 20% of reserves where kangaroo numbers were greater than this, it was by very small numbers. They concluded that the claim about "over abundance" was false.
The report on this project - Kangaroos in ACT Nature Parks - Population estimates and culling history 2009-2022 - may be found on Save Canberra's Kangaroo's website https://savecanberraskangaroos.org ❤🦘🦘

Rebecca's letter published in this week's Canberra Weekly. It is indeed a bizarre claim that eastern grey kangaroos are an "invasive species" and a "pest". Kangaroos have lived on this continent far longer than any humans. With this in mind, we only need to look in the mirror to see who the invasive species is! 🦘🦘🦘❤

As 2024 draws to a close we would like to thank everyone who has supported and fought for Canberra’s kangaroos this year.

It was a big year with an election in the ACT with a real opportunity to see change for kangaroos. We had more parties with a stance against the kangaroo cull than ever before and that is a big achievement thanks to the advocacy of so many over years and years.

This year we had over 75 letters published in local newspapers, we ran a number of ads in these same papers too that were seen by many thousands of people. We also were fortunate to have quite a few segments on ABC Radio as well as featuring in an ABC news article!

We conducted outreach to raise awareness of what happens to Canberra’s kangaroos as well as joined other animal advocacy groups in protesting against the use of kangaroo skins in Adidas scooter boots.

While we worked hard this year, we also grieved.

We mourned the loss of 1232 kangaroos, 320 wallabies and 524 wallaby and kangaroo joeys. Their lives brutally ended at the hands of the ACT Government.

We will never stop fighting for them.

Thanks for sticking with us in 2024 🦘❤️‍🩹
