Kanin 🥢

An actual ray of sunshine.

We love our quirky dogs. Kanin is here to learn how to be the social dog he desperately wants to be.
How to introduce himself to other dogs. How to invite an interaction. How to decline one.
He is learning how to accept invitation and how to politely move on when we get a “no thanks”.
How does he most like to play?
What games would he like to learn?
Kanin’s social unfurling has been a delight to be part of.
He is such a joyful little guy.

Buttons ☀️

We are about to pause new enrolments for a few weeks while we let our groups settle.

The success of every dog is dependent upon the stability of the collective. So we will intermittently have periods where we will close enrolments for this reason.

Our enrolments for Thursday are closed for now.
We have only two more spots currently available one each on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Please, pop onto our waitlist and we’ll give you a call to chat about your pups needs and how you can prepare them for their trial bookings.

Cinnamon 🌥️

Timid dogs are our specialty. As a trainer, I enjoy their process immensely. They ask me to shelve all my clever tricks and just have patience. Sensitive dogs know when you have an agenda. They keep us honest.

Trust is built over time with many many small moments and gestures. Each dog has their own saturation point and while it may seem afterwards that it was that one singular moment that shifted the dog’s feelings, it will always be the consistent little messages of “you are safe” that matter.

Patience is one of the most valuable skills we have learned from our timid dogs.

Maturity. Believe it or not, this is the poster child for a dog who has matured nicely.
The puppy years are tough- for most of us it’s a long time between puppies and our memories aren’t always honest with us. The rose coloured glasses just don’t hold up to the biting, the barking, the peeing on everything!

But, time is our friend in these early years. If we have good guidance from a trusted dog professional and stay the course with our management of the opportunities our puppies get to practice unwanted behaviours, we will eventually find ourselves with the mature dog.

Spud here was definitely a handful during his first 12 months. Pulling on the leash, bulldozing into dogs in play, barging through doors… but by reducing the opportunity for him to access moments to rehearse this while shaping the behaviours that will serve him in his life has paid off.
He is a lovely friend to all the dogs at school. He is the gentle persistent encourager shyer dogs and a tolerant rough and tumble playmate for the puppies still learning to moderate themselves.

Sometimes it feels like nothing is working when you are in the middle of it- but if you are doing the work your trainer advises, it will pay off in the long term.

We are getting busy!
You all know me and Bones L❤️VE a chat! Especially when we get to talk to you about your dogs!
As it gets busier at pick up time, we are going to need to prioritise our new BB&Co. folks and it may mean we don’t have the space for the usual chinwag. At the end of an 11 hour day, even we run out of chatterbox gas! 😂

Please be assured that if anything particularly important ever happens for your doggo at school we will always speak with you about it, but it may be that I will call you rather than try and chat at pick up.

We put lots of effort into our social media to give you access to your dog’s experience with us at school. We hope you are enjoying being entertained by our little gang’s antics.
We hope the work we put into sharing our photos and videos is the little boost of joy we all do with after a long day of work!

Big love
Kirstie, Bones & BamBam.

📌Leash Reactivity!
There’s a bunch of reasons our dogs can get explosive on leash.
Excitement, frustration, anxiety, fear, or maybe they are straight up are just looking for a bit of biffo.
But what is underpinning all of these big feelings is most often a lack of clarity and understanding between the dog and their person.

Our modern society requires our dog to be on leash- for their safety, and for the comfort of others we share public spaces with, including other dogs.

Many of us are simply using the leash as a restraint (makes sense, it’s for their safety, like a seatbelt right?).
But it’s not the leash itself that’s causing the problem, but the way we are using it.

A dogs strongest form of communication is tactile (physical contact). The leash is a literal “line of communication” that they “feel” via “pressure and the release of pressure”.
The timing of “the release” is very significant to our dogs and used thoughtfully provides reassurance and understanding or if used haphazardly can create tension, confusion and frustration.

When we don’t understand how important this is to our dogs we can be inadvertently creating the very problem we are struggling with- pulling, lunging, barking when on leash.

We teach all of our little dog students leash communication. It’s an important step in being able to offer them guidance during social interactions.
If you are struggling with leash pulling or reactivity please reach out and I can connect you with one of my wonderful colleagues who can provide you lessons in leash communication, so you can communicate clearly with your dog too.

Rocky 🧸& Yogi🧨

We get comments sometimes that someone’s “little” may be too “rough” to play with other littles.

Firstly, rough play isn’t a flex. Often we see “rough” play as insecure, hectic and defensive. By the time we have supported that dog to feel safe and advocated for we see a much gentler side of these dogs, and while some (definitely not all) of those dogs go on to enjoy body contact games, they all do it from a much more relaxed place.

Robust play is not “rough”. It can be fast, full contact, highly energy AND connected, respectful and considerate.

If your dog is hurting other dogs in play, it’s not playful.
They need support.

Rocket 🚀

Rocket is our starter culture.
We build a group slowly, usually one by one.
Pacing things for the energy to settle and stabilise between each addition.
We often have an activity for the dogs to focus on when they first enter the play space, rather than their excitement be directed immediately into the other dogs.
We mostly aim for them to be as close to neutral as possible. Gentle soft introductions, sniffing and warming to one another slowly.
We check in on each other, taking notice of each others feelings.
Rocket is his own little dude. He likes being amongst the other dogs but generally doesn’t care to interact directly too much.
He’s the perfect guy to help us set the tone for our first group of the day.
Unless… he’s in his frisky mood.
Then all bets are off!
Lucky we always have a plan B.

Gracie 🌸

Gracie often helps us in introducing a new dog to our group. She’s the one who always makes the new guy feel welcome.
She also helps ease introductions between other dogs. She has a behaviour a little like a cat that rubs against your legs- she’s a smoocher. She can ease tension between interactions with her smooching, and often we use this strategically by adding her in to interactions at key moments.

As we get to know our students, they often show us little talents that we support them to share with the group.

Thistle🪻& Skadi 🏹

We aren’t just about healthy, mindful play here.
We are about forming friendships.
Relational play is different from other play.
It’s about games. Dogs when given regular access to a particular friend, will create specific games that match the combined play style of those two dogs.

Relational play is connected, responsive, and mutually satisfying. It allows for challenge and growth at a pace determined by the dog with the slower pace. (When supported by an adult who is informed by dog to dog interactions).

Relational play can help a dog grow resilience and bravery, and confidence via asserting boundaries and learning containment and emotional regulation.
These skills can affect other areas outside of the play relationship where a dog might have struggles.

Sandy 🏄‍♀️

Progress is not linear. It’s an organic process that has seasons of growth and dormancy. Bursts of reaching and stretching into the unknown and long moments of resting and maturing in between.
It’s important we value these quiet still moments as much as we do the inching forward.

Each dog has their own journey with their learning. There are different phases to learning and everyone moves through each phase at different paces. Some speed through settling into the environment and take longer to process emotional regulation and learning escalation and de escalation of excitement.

The ebb is the preparation for the flow.

🧢Archie

We ensure we spend time building a bond with each dog. It’s an important piece of the scaffolding around their learning with us. They MUST feel safe and supported here.
It’s essential.
And it’s equally important we balance this with encouragement to venture away to explore our environment and welcome the challenges of making friends.
Our support for each dog looks different. It depends where they naturally sit on the “attachment” scale.
Some dogs form a secure attachment to their caregiver and easily come and go from the reassurance of the relationship with us and others need help experiencing that they can move away confidently knowing they can return anytime and reassurance will be waiting.
Little dogs (just like little people) need to trust we will be there for them in a grounded and consistent way.
Over time they internalise this message and they find their space within themselves.
When their “need” for reassurance is met they become self assured.
This is our hope for all our BB&C students.

Little Baby Honey 🍯

We are often are often asked when the best time to start Playchool is.
Today. Today is the best time.

We are fortunate to have raised many of our students up from little puppies.
Puppies adapt and adjust almost seamlessly to changes and in a social group they tend to best be able to learn directly from our older socially skilled dogs.
Asides from the foundation skills training we provide we generally don’t need to address ingrained behavioural problems which can easily develop in pups when they aren’t receiving the right kind of supports for their individual needs.

So if you are expecting a puppy into your home- reach out and chat to us about how we can support you in this special transition and maybe avoid some of the common challenges around puppy raising.

🚜Mila & 🍯Honey

Sometimes when people enquire about our little dog playschool they worry their little dog will be too boisterous for all the tiny fluffies. Fair concern, you would think.
Meet Mila. We call her Monster Truck.
(She’s the cute little white fluffy one the left).
And her pal to her right is Honey. Honey is made of liquid, nothing can affect her coz she just lets it flow. Together they are a formidable force.
Bruce Lee once quoted something about these two, I can’t remember but… your rough players are good here.
