Got to see Hazard again to help get her ready to show her gorgeous self at the show tomorrow. She’s a cocker spaniel. This is a show groomer so this is what they can look like if you never clip their coat and groom them well and amazing breeding .

Welcome to Pippin the springer spaniel. He was an absolute delight for his first groom working out that whilst it was all very different it wasn’t scary . Such a good man. As this guy likes to do tracking with his owner his furnishings were trimmed to make it easier to find and remove seeds whilst leaving his head, ears and tail and back so he still has his gorgeous locks there

Let’s talk how to restrain your dog safely in your car if you have to hit the brakes or someone hits you .
Think about restraining your dog as safely as you would yourself or a child .
I had to hit the brakes a few years ago when Dex was in the car with me- thankfully he was in the backseat with a harness on and a seat belt attached to his ring buckle and seatbelt. When I hit the breaks his body stopped just between the two front seats. If he wasn’t restrained he prob would have gone straight through the windscreen and this was in a 60km zone . If it had been attached to his neck he probably would have snapped his neck.
A car harness has a chest plate that goes between their front legs to under their belly hence putting the pressure there if you hit the breaks.
There are several crash tested harnesses available for you to buy.
Dex who is a German shepherd has the ezy dog crash test car harness( I got from petbarn . See pic 1, daisy the Dachy ( pic 2 and 3) has the car safe brand from pet stock. As you can see both great fitting harnesses .

Let’s talk getting your puppies ready for grooming.
Grooming needs to become a habit and part of every day life for dogs. The more they are used to it the less stressful it is.
Making sure you use a metal comb and running it down to the skin and it’s not grabbing.
Teach them to stand on a table even if you have a second pair of hands to help hold your puppy whilst giving them a lick mat or lots of yummy treats to distract them.
Dogs learn from their behaviour and that then creates a habit. Ie if you hold their paw and they put their mouth on you and you stop they then learn that behaviour stops something they don’t want bring done. They will then use that behaviour - ie they don’t want to be picked up and you try and they put their mouth on you and you stop again reinforces that be favour worked they can also escalate it ie the mouth becomes a bite .
So what can you do….. if you pup puts their mouth on you a little “uh uh” and keep the handling gentle but keep doing what you need to do - if they have stopped the mouthing reward reward reward with praise pats and food.
If your puppy tries to pull its foot away whilst you’re combing hold on to the leg and go with the movement - they learn that you’re still going to have your hand on them and they will adjust and settle and when they do praise and reward and start combing.
Look at hold long you’re holding that leg - ie are they ok with you doing it for 2 secs but not 10 secs? Reward the 2 secs, thrn next time try for 4 secs again reward and build up to 10 secs over time.
Do your homework, anything that they are comfortable with keep working on it with treats and pats till it becomes routine. More routine means more comfort and less conflict and less stress.
Look at your body language as our dogs do.
They know that an action equals a reaction .
There’s a reason that every showing I’ve done are amazing with grooming. Their owners groom them that much that it’s as much routine as sitting on a mat. They know the bath and dryer and brushes and combs and clippers and scissors. They stand still . When the dog understands what we want they are less stressed.
This young man has settled for the bath and dryer and brushing and combing but still needs work getting used to things being done on his feet. He is at the mouthy stage so he’s learning that won’t work .

It’s was Tyson’s first puppy groom today and he did so well. Nothing was over the top stress type him so now we just see him regularly as a puppy to make it all routine and part of life . Then I had jet the lab in for a quick bath and blow out and rusty the Groodle for a fix up as dad had tried to do some tidying . And now it’s mango daiquiri time. Happy new year to you all . Thankyou for all the support for 2024 in my first full year working from home .

Good luck Sully with the move to WA and all that beach swimming time with the fam. Safe driving guys. This guy took 3 hours today to get all the fur out and the trimming. Like many groomers I have a base rate ( based on what one of my monthly dogs of how long it would take me) then I have an hourly rate the same as everyone has an hourly rate. The cost of a groom is relative to how long it takes us. Sullys owners knew he was going to be a big job today so they were happy as to how long it was going to take me. Now I’m off to get an iced coffee and lunch. Peace and love to you all .
