๐Ÿถ Did you know dogs aren't actually colorblind? ๐Ÿง
While their world isn't as vibrant as ours, they can see shades of blue, yellow, and grey! ๐ŸŒˆ
It's all about those cones in their eyes! ๐Ÿ‘€ Unlike humans with three types of cones (red, green, and blue), dogs only have two, limiting their color perception.

๐Ÿ’ก Fun fact: A study at the University of Washington showed dogs can see blues and yellows but not reds or greens! ๐Ÿค“ This means those bright red toys might not be as visually stimulating for your pup as you think!

So, next time you're picking out a toy, think yellow, grey, or blue for a pup-approved pick! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿถ
It's not just about the squeak, it's about what colors they can actually appreciate!

๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿพ Frostyโ€™s Journey: A Tale of Itchiness, Love, and Healing ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ

Meet Frosty, a sweet pup with the brightest smile and the most loving bond with his devoted owner. ๐Ÿฅฐ
Despite his happy-go-lucky attitude, Frosty has been battling a problem all too common among Canberra dogs โ€” chronic itchiness and ear infections.

Frostyโ€™s floppy ears (as cute as they are ๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ’•) tend to trap moisture, making him prone to uncomfortable, recurring ear infections. His skin issues and ear problems are connected, as is often the case with allergic dogs. This discomfort had been bothering Frosty for far too long, but thankfully, the compassionate team at Weston Woden Animal Hospital stepped in to help.

They recommended a full ear flush, a deep clean, cytology, and medication to tackle the infection head-on. With their expertise and Frostyโ€™s resilient spirit, this handsome boy is finally on the road to relief. ๐Ÿฉบโœจ

๐ŸŒพ Why Are So Many Canberra Dogs Itchy?

Canberra is a beautiful place, but its unique geography makes it the allergy capital of Australia. ๐Ÿž๏ธ
Seasonal changes stir up allergens like pollen and grass seeds, and many dogs experience flare-ups of itchiness, skin irritation, and ear or a**l gland problems during the warmer months.

๐Ÿ• Managing Chronic Skin and Ear Issues: Frostyโ€™s Top Tips

1๏ธโƒฃ Consult Your Vet: Medications like antihistamines or allergy injections can be game-changers. For severe cases, your vet may recommend allergy testing and immunotherapy.

2๏ธโƒฃ Shampoo Solutions:
- For sensitive skin, medicated shampoos can work wonders.
- Some dogs benefit from soothing oatmeal-based shampoos and conditioners.

3๏ธโƒฃ Regular Ear Cleaning:
- Dogsโ€™ ear ca**ls are different from humans โ€” never use Q-tips!
- Use a gentle ear cleaning solution or saline. Sq**rt, massage gently, and wipe away debris.

4๏ธโƒฃ Remove Outdoor Allergens:
- For dogs like Frosty, wiping them down after outdoor play can be transformative.
- One of our team members uses a shallow tray filled with water and diluted oatmeal shampoo by her back door. Her dog walks through the tray after outdoor toilet breaks, removing pollen and plant matter from paws and belly.
- Pet-friendly water wipes are also great, especially for larger dogs!

5๏ธโƒฃ Diet Matters:
- A high-quality diet rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can support healthy skin and coat. Consult your vet about the best food for dogs with sensitivities.

๐Ÿ’ก Share Your Tips!
Frostyโ€™s journey is a reminder of the love and care it takes to help our pets live their happiest, healthiest lives.

๐ŸŽ† Fireworks and Your Pets ๐ŸŽ†

Itโ€™s easy to get caught up in the excitement of New Yearโ€™s Eve and the Fireworks but they can be terrifying, overwhelmingโ  and hazardous for both our pets and native wildlife. ๐Ÿฅ‚

Many animals become so frightened by the noise and commotion of fireworks that they run from otherwise familiar environments and people, and sadly become lost. They may also suffer devastating or even fatal health effects from the stress. The sudden bright flashes and sounds can cause wild animals to run into roadways, resulting in more car accidents than normal. Local Vets and Wildlife rescues are often flooded with traumatized, injured and orphaned animals.

Are You Prepared? Here are just a few helpful tips for keeping your pets safe through the celebrations. ๐Ÿ›Ÿ๐ŸŽ‰

Keep Pets Indoors. ๐Ÿก
Whilst you may enjoy the fireworks, pets are often terrified of the loud booms, unusual noises and light show. Do not take them outside during the show as they can be easily startled and may run away.

Provide a Quiet Place Inside Your Home to Help Them Feel Safe and Secure.๐Ÿฅฐ
Prepare a place for your pet such as a quiet room or crate to help them feel secure. Every pet has a favorite hiding spot make sure they have
access to it during fireworks.

Give Them Distractions: Toys, Treats, Soothing Music and Your Company and Comfort.๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿฆด
Favorite toys and treats, plus soothing music and your reassuring company
can help distract pets during fireworks.

Make Sure Your Dog is Wearing Their Collar with Their Tags. Microchip Your Pet for Added Security. ๐Ÿชช
Your pets should aways have proper identification tags, with up-to-date contact information. We always recommend you
microchip your pet for easy identification.

Walk Your Dog Earlier in the Day to Get Needed Exercise and Playtime. ๐Ÿ•๐ŸŽพ
Some pets may be too frightened to go out once the fireworks start and this will be a good way to tire them out so that they
can rest better later.

๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ„ Hugo Boss: A Stylish Survivor! ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ

Say hello to Hugo Boss, a dashing Amstaff with a name as stylish as his personality! ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐Ÿ• Hugo is his dadโ€™s best mate and, as you can imagine, he was probably spoiled to the max this Christmas (because what else does a boss deserve?). ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ„

But recently, Hugo had a tough time. He was attacked by another dog, leaving him with painful puncture wounds on his neck. ๐Ÿ˜ข Unfortunately, these wounds became infected โ€” a common risk after dog bites due to the bacteria found in animalsโ€™ mouths and teeth.

Hugoโ€™s dad, as devoted as he is, was between jobs at the time of the attack and couldnโ€™t cover the costs of the care Hugo urgently needed.
Thatโ€™s when the incredible team at Animal Referral Hospital stepped in, reaching out to ACT Pet Crisis Support for $1500 to fund Hugoโ€™s medical treatment.
Thanks to this support, Hugo got the care he needed to heal and is now back home, feeling much better and looking as handsome as ever. ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ—ฃA HUGE Shoutout to Our Emergency Vet Heroes
The emergency vet teams at Animal Referral Hospital, Canberra Veterinary Emergency Services, Valley Vet Emergency, and the Walk-In Clinic for Animals are working tirelessly this holiday season. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ
Their dedication ensures pets like Hugo get the urgent care they need, even during the busiest time of year.
We canโ€™t thank them enough for their compassion, expertise, and commitment. ๐Ÿ’œ

Letโ€™s all take a moment to appreciate these unsung heroes who help our furry family members in their most critical moments.

Letโ€™s talk about Ears - specifically Itchy Ears in Dogs ๐Ÿถ

Key to Managing Ear Infections in Dogs! ๐Ÿพ

If your dog is shaking their head, scratching their ears, or has excessive or malodorous discharge in the ear ca**l, it could be an ear infection. ๐Ÿง

One of the best ways to diagnose and treat ear infections is through ear cytology โ€” a simple test where we examine a sample from the ear under a microscope.
The results can be surprisingly colorful, revealing bacteria, yeast, or ear mites causing the infection. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Repeat ear swabs help confirm whether the treatment is working or if itโ€™s still needed. This ensures we're on the right track for a speedy recovery and a happy, healthy pup! ๐Ÿถ

Dear pet parents of Canberra and surrounds!

You are also welcome to contact the following Sydney clinics who will be able to assist you tonight

๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ„ Kai's Christmas Spirit Story ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ

Meet Kai, a big, beautiful Staffy pup with a heart as boofy as his paws! ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’• Recently, Kai found himself in a tough spot after suffering a wound that just wouldnโ€™t heal. To get back to his bouncy, tail-wagging self, Kai needed surgical debridementโ€”a procedure his loving owner couldnโ€™t afford due to being on a disability pension.

Enter the incredible team at Capital Vet, who saw just how much Kai means to his devoted owner. ๐Ÿฉบโœจ They reached out to ACT Pet Crisis Support for $1500 to cover the surgery costs.
Not only that, but they showed true Christmas spirit by reducing their fees wherever possible, ensuring Kai got the care he needed without overwhelming his family financially. ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ’›

Thanks to their compassion and generosity, Kaiโ€™s wound is now healing beautifully, and heโ€™s back home bringing joy and love to his family this holiday season. ๐Ÿก๐Ÿพ

This is what Christmas Spirit looks like:
๐Ÿ’œ A caring vet team going above and beyond.
๐Ÿ’œ A community coming together to support those in need.
๐Ÿ’œ A beloved pet getting a second chance at health and happiness.

Kaiโ€™s story reminds us of the incredible kindness and dedication shown by the vet teams in our region. Weโ€™re so grateful to Capital Vet for making this Christmas a little brighter for Kai and his family.

๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ„ Keep Christmas Safe for Your Curious Cats! ๐Ÿฑโœจ

๐ŸŽถ She sees you when you're sleeping, she knows when you're awake... ๐ŸŽถ
Nope, weโ€™re not talking about Mrs. Clausโ€”weโ€™re talking about Lilith, the stunning and oh-so-photogenic feline! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿพ

Lilith is a beloved family member, but her curiosity recently got her into serious trouble. ๐Ÿ˜ฟ After nibbling on cooked chicken bones, Lilith ended up with an intestinal obstruction โ€” a life-threatening condition that required immediate surgery.

โš ๏ธ Did you know?
Cooked bones are extremely dangerous for both cats and dogs. Unlike raw bones, cooked bones splinter easily and can cause choking, internal injuries, or blockages.

Thanks to the quick-thinking team at Belconnen Vet Centre, Lilith underwent life-saving surgery and made it home safe to her loving familyโ€”ready to reclaim her role as the queen of Instagram-worthy snaps! ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ“ท

When Lilithโ€™s owner faced the overwhelming costs of her treatment, ACT Pet Crisis Support stepped in to help cover the remaining expenses. Together, we made sure Lilith got the care she desperately needed. ๐Ÿ’•

This holiday season, keep curious paws safe:

๐Ÿ”’ Secure leftovers โ€” even the tiniest bones can be deadly.
๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Lock bins and trash cans to avoid sneaky snackers.
๐ŸŽ Watch out for decorations like tinsel, ribbon, and string, which can also pose a serious risk to pets.

Letโ€™s keep all our furry friends safe and healthy this Christmas. ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿพ
Whether itโ€™s festive feasts or holiday hazards, a little extra caution goes a long way.

๐Ÿพ Happy Holidays from ACT Pet Crisis Support! ๐Ÿพ

Helping Disadvantaged Pet Owners

ACT Pet Crisis Fund is a registered not for profit charity supporting disadvantaged pet owners with pets.

We rely on entirely on donations from animal lovers to assist pet owners that would otherwise need to euthanase or surrender their pet due to financial concerns. You can donate to the fund here.

We work in cooperation with local vet clinics and the RSPCA to assist pet owners in Canberra, Queanbeyan and surrounding areas. More information can be found on our website: actpetcrisisfund.com

For many people, isolated from family and friends, their pet is what keeps them going. When faced with a medical emergency for their pet, sadly many pet owners are unable to afford treatment and their beloved pet has to be euthanased or surrendered.
