Canine Health Alert - *edited

Ccean creatures known as "cunjevoi" have been washing ashore along our coastline. These are NOT toxic but can cause gut issues if swallowed.

Other marine species such as sea slugs or sea hares, are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if ingested. Dogs can be exposed by licking or picking up these. The toxins can cause spasms, convulsions and other neurological reactions in dogs if ingested.

According to our veterinarian Dr Carl: "Sea hares and sea slugs are toxic to dogs, but sea squirts or cunjevoi (see photo) which are currently washing up on our beaches are NOT toxic but can cause bowel obstructions if swallowed by dogs. Many dogs enjoy gobbling up decomposed matter and in the case of sea squirts this can lead to emergency surgery to remove the intestinal blockages."

Please seek veterinary help should you have any concerns about your dog coming into contact with any cunjevoi.

Some Walk & Train sessions are being rescheduled, Training and Consultations are happening indoors due to hot weather.

Think about your dog's comfort during heat waves:
* Have at least 2 (preferably 3) different water bowls. Try to ensure at least one of them is in the shade at all times.
* Allow them a place in the garden to dig a cool “nest”. Rake it over at the end of the day so they can reveal the cool dirt again the next day without having to start a new nest.
* Play in a paddle pool or with the hose if your dog likes that sort of thing (my dogs would think I was torturing them)
* Provide them with a choice of beds - they may prefer to lie flat out on the floor or on a raised bed with more air circulation
* Doorways are often where cool draughts are found, so get used to stepping over or around your pooch
* Freeze their dinner:
Eg. PaddlePups - place dogs biscuits in a dish or bowl and cover with water, broth or stock and freeze.

Maverick is finding it easier to contain all his emotions. He is learning that "socialisation" can mean just doing nothing - just chillin' and watching the world go by. He doesn't need to "say hello" and we can always move to a quieter spot before he shows any discomfort or excitement.

Louis and I are getting to know each other. We have even been enjoying a game or two between short sessions of concentration on training. He is very polite and gentle and isn't he beautiful?

I once had a black and tan dog, Wulfgang who was a Gordon Setter Cross, it is a handsome colour combination.

Brave little Maverick has very recently been adopted into a new loving family who want the best start for him. He is being gently exposed to new situations, sights and sounds and is learning how to be a good family companion. His confidence has noticeably improved since I first met him a couple of weeks ago.

'What's that bang?'
The Majura Training Range in the ACT has let us know that exercises will take place between 7:30am and sunset from 13-16 November. Weather conditions at the time often determine the extent of the noise.

People with anxious dogs should consider what works best for their dog. Tips include putting them in your garage with a radio on as background noise and ensuring the backyard/garage is secure and the dog is not able to run away in fear of the noise.
