Dr Ashley is a wonderful new graduate who began working with us last February and has been a bright and intelligent addition to our veterinarian team. Those who have met Dr Ashley know how hard working and diligent she is, be sure to say hello if you ever see her around the clinic!

Over the coming weeks we will be focusing on highlighting every one of our veterinarians with a series of questions, so keep checking in on our socials to get a better insight on what our veterinarians’ special interests are and how they might spend their free time outside of the clinic.

For today's veterinarian introduction post, we are showcasing Dr Jess Divall.

Dr Jess has been working at Northside for just under two years now, whenever she is not actively working we can often find her fawning over our golden retriever patients and improving or learning new skills.

Over the coming weeks we will be focusing on highlighting every one of our veterinarians with a series of questions, so keep checking in on our socials to get a better insight on what our veterinarians' special interests are and how they might spend their free time outside of the clinic.

Ticks are rampant this time of year and it is important to be aware of the risks they pose to our pets, regardless of whether your pet has been to the coast or not.
It is important to note ticks can travel on us and materials as well as migrate towards Canberra with the warmer weather.

What causes tick paralysis? - Tick paralysis is almost exclusively associated with the feeding of adult female paralysis ticks, however rarely it may also be caused by juvenile ticks. As it feeds on blood, the tick secretes numerous toxins. One of them is a potent neurotoxin that can cause paralysis of the body and respiratory muscles and affect the ability to swallow correctly.
Paralysis tick symptoms In dogs
Your dog may display one or more of the following symptoms of tick paralysis, in any order:

Loss of coordination in the back legs (wobbliness), which may progress to include the front legs. This is more pronounced when climbing stairs, jumping up or down, and moving in a figure of eight
Difficulty standing
Difficulty sitting
Unable to move or rise from a lying position
Laboured or rapid breathing, grunting noises and/or abdominal heaving
Change or loss of bark
Coughing
Gagging and vomiting
Loss of appetite
Inability to blink in one or both eyes
If you notice any symptoms of tick paralysis in your dog, it is important to seek veterinary attention immediately.

Paralysis Tick Prevention - the volume of ticks is particularly high. Having a strong isoxazoline based product on board the pet such as Simparica, Simparica TRIO, Bravecto, Bravecto Plus, Nexgard Spectra for Dogs and Cats or Revolution Plus for Cats is a vital first step.
However, daily physical tick checks and removal is paramount, and it seems pet owners are lackadaisical with completing a routine physical check, let alone all those pesky tricky spots on the animal’s body like under lips, tails, in the ears and between the paw pads.
We have added a video of a physical tick search performed by one of our nurses for education on how to effectively search your pets at home.

Welcome to our second vet introduction post!
Today we introduce our other clinic director and star veterinarian Dr Winston Oakes.

When in the clinic Dr Winston is most commonly found in our purpose-built dental suite or in the ultrasound room providing extra special care to your pets. Dr Winston is one of only a few vets in Canberra with memberships in animal dentistry and oral surgery, meaning he can perform advanced dentistry, such as root canals or pulp capping, among many other restorative procedures.

In his free time you might find Winston bouldering or learning a new MTB trick in the park.

Over the coming weeks we will be focusing on highlighting every one of our veterinarians with a series of questions, so keep checking in on our socials to get a better insight on what our veterinarians’ special interests are and how they might spend their time outside of the clinic.

It’s grass seed season again.

It's time to start checking your dog's paws, ears and body for grass seeds.
If missed grass seeds can migrate under the skin causing abscesses and even move to other areas of the body.

This video shows how a grass seed migrates if missed on your dog's body.

Ways to avoid your dog getting grass seeds include:
-Check your dog after walks for grass seeds ensuring to check between the toes particularly
-Control grass in your backyard
-Keep long haired dogs hair around their feet and ears short

Common signs your dog may have a grass seed stuck:
-Swelling between the toes that is likely to cause them to want to lick
-Shaking the head / scratching at an ear
-Squinting /red eye

Contact your vet if you are concerned your dog may have a grass seed that you cannot remove.
