Apart from being a lovely celebration of a lifetime of service from this super doggo, this video shows very clearly something I talk about a lot in classes. Naturally developed alert behaviours!

This lovely girl looks to have been trained to 'freeze' when she finds target odour. You will see though that she is also lifting her head back in anticipation of the ball coming over the top. An anticipatory behaviour that has developed over time through the way reward has been delivered.

We see this in the 'look back' that often develops with our own doggos as we go along on our scent work journey. Not deliberately taught as a trained 'alert', but developed entirely through our reward delivery as we train.

One of the things we will talk about in our upcoming Scent Work Skills Builder course is trained alert behaviours and we'll look at the question - should we have one?

You'll be unsurprised to know that the answer is the same as for most dog training questions - it depends 😉

February and March group classes are now up on the website and ready to book 📅

Scent Work Skills Builder (5 weeks @ 6.30pm), beginning 12 February
Introduction to Scent Work (5 weeks @ 7.15pm), beginning 18 March
Introduction to Odour (5 weeks @ 6pm), beginning 18 March

Intro to Scent Work and Intro to Odour will be held at an indoor venue at the QBN Showgrounds. Skills builder location will vary from class to class, depending on the skills we are working on in that particular session.

Variety is the spice of life, and scent work 😉

IMPORTANT

If you have booked in for a casual class with John and I in January and February, can you please email me at [email protected] with the date/s you have booked?

The website crashed this afternoon and all I was able to save was a list of names but no dates or email addresses so that I can contact everyone 😭

The website also sent automated cancellation emails to everyone who had booked - ignore these. Classes are still ON.

We haven't forgot you!

Planning for term one 2025 regular group courses is underway.

Term one courses will be held in the evenings to avoid the heat of the day.

🐾 Introduction to Scent Work and Introduction to Odour are not likely to commence before late February/early March. Again, to allow for the warmer weather to have hopefully calmed down a bit. Welfare of the dogs will always be our number one priority.

🐾 Scent Work Elements and Scent Work Skills Builder will commence earlier as we can be more flexible with our location choices for these classes.

Please keep an eye here or on our website for dates and booking information. Existing students will also get an email once bookings are open.

*Update* All classes are now full. You guys were all over it!!! 😍

Everyone has loved casual classes so much and John and I have loved teaching them!

We have set three dates in January and February, while we get planning for our block classes, and these are available for booking on the website now.

Classes will take place at 7pm on Friday 10 and 17 Jan and 14 Feb. Locations to be advised.

With only one drop-in class left for 2024, and as we wind down for a break, I wanted to thank all of our wonderful clients for your amazing support during this first year of 'official' business.

I say this at the beginning of every class block but it is truly a privilege to work with each and every one of you and your beautiful dogs and I'm super proud of everything that teams have achieved this year.

There are some exciting plans in the pipeline for 2025, both in class offerings and my professional education. As you all know, it is very important to me that I bring you the very best coaching that I can and I can't wait to share with you all in the New Year.

In the meantime, enjoy a restful break with loved ones, furry and not so furry 🎅

There are just two spots left in our last drop-in class for the year. If you were waiting, get in quick! Our 8 December session is now fully booked.

Class will take place on Sunday 22 December; we will shift to an evening (6.30pm) time and it will be held somewhere cool and shady.

Well done to these super sniffer teams who graduated from Intro to Scent Work, Scent Work Elements and Intro to Odour today 👏

They have all been working extra hard over the last six weeks and it's been a real privilege and so much fun to train with them all.

Comet, Amy and a team of some of our wonderful students have spent the last two nights competing at the Tuggeranong Dog Training Club Novice Scent Work Trial.

Everyone did an amazing job with qualifying runs in all four elements and a few ribbons went home with some teams too 🥇🥈🥉

Trialling is a fun way to test where we are at in our training and we are so proud of how well everyone did, along with the support and encouragement we all shared together 👏

Well done team ❤️

Comet and I spent the day yesterday hanging out with a great group of awesome sniffers and learning heaps from the wonderful Jean Richardson of the National Association of Canine Scent Work.

Sooo much wonderful information and a few 🤯 along with many💡

It's so important to me that I keep learning and growing my own skills so that I can keep bringing the best information to my students.

Our website has been updated with three more Continuing Scent Work drop-in classes (17 Nov, 8 and 22 Dec), taking us through to the Christmas break.

These classes will be held in mystery locations with the 17 Nov class taking us out and about for exterior searches.

There are still spaces available in this Sunday's class where we will be workshoping threshold and high hides.
