Some really good information.

When I’m training with a nervous/conflicted pup/dog I don’t approach too close. They may want the food but not contact with me. If it’s appropriate I will put a treat down and move away which allows the dog space. If they are not too skittish I may slowly and carefully throw towards them (not at them) or I might instruct the guardian to give them a treat for me being near them and they are calm and not reactive. Definitely no direct eye contact and body turning slightly to the side.

Wow another good reason why dogs should be secure in a car no matter what breed they are !

New Puppy? Very important you know this

This is something everyone should see. This xray is of a 2 week old puppy.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown - around 12-18 months depending on their breed, you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

Very sad to hear today that Karen Pryor has passed at the age of 92.

Karen Pryor is an inspiration to so many.

She introduced the clicker as a tool to animal training. Not only that, she did so much more because she educated trainers to see animals (our learners) as sentient beings. Opened our closed eyes to allow animals to make choices, & that a positive dialogue in teaching enhances welfare.
Karen will now rest but those of us left will continue on with what she started and has passed on to us.

She will always be known as a trailblazer in the animal industry. Many great trainers have learned from her. Even the ones that don’t use her methods know of her. Trainers are now using what she taught and also continuing to learn and do their own research and new techniques are always coming through. They pass on this knowledge to those of us that are prepared to listen and learn. Learning never stops for us and also for our clients and their dogs.

Yes ,you can teach an old dog new tricks and teach humans new and better ways to create a bond with their animals, achieve their goals, work on behaviour issues whilst using more humane training methods.

I wish I could be a fraction of an inspiration to those I meet through my training, as Karen has been to all of us. If I can also make a difference albeit small, that would make me very happy! Her legacy is immense.

About Karen Pryor Karen Pryor, publicity photo for Oceanic Institute, about 1968. Karen Pryor had many interests. She was an observer of the smallest detail (as a child she studied butterfly anatomy) but what made her life’s work exceptional was that she also saw the big picture. It would have bee...

I love this! Cooperative care! “CHIN” is a regular behaviour that is included in my group program and one classic example of how to use it. Can be used at the vets too. Don’t forget when you’re dog is learning, has learned this to let your groomer and your vet know so they can use it.

It’s much nicer for your dog and for the human ❤️

With NYE celebrations commencing tonight, we would like to give a friendly reminder to please keep your animals safe 🙏🏼
Fireworks can be extremely frightening for all animals, and it is a time of the year when dogs and cats go missing the most.
Here are a few tips to consider:

Keep your animals inside: The loud noise of fireworks can make your pets fearful, which can cause them to try and escape. Even with high fences, there is a chance they could get out. Please treat them like any human family member and bring them inside.

Create a ‘safe space’ for them: Designate an area in your home where your pets are most at ease. This could be in their crate, in their bed or on the couch with you. Be understanding and considerate of their big feelings during this noisy time.

Play soothing music: This can help calm your pets and distract them from the loud noises caused by fireworks and other NYE celebrations. Keep all windows and doors closed to help block out these sounds.

Stay home with them: The most comfort your animals will get is from you. Please consider staying home with them, or ask a friend or family member to be with them, to help them stay calm and relaxed as possible.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful New Year 2025 - one your furry family members can enjoy too 🎆

Electric collars rely on pain or fear to suppress unwanted behaviours. They deliver an electric stimulus that is intentionally unpleasant to deter the dog from repeating the behaviour. For the dog to associate the discomfort with their actions, the sensation must be sufficiently aversive to create a negative emotional response, such as fear, anxiety, or pain. Without this emotional impact, the dog is unlikely to alter their behaviour, as there would be no motivation to avoid the stimulus.
