๐Ÿ”Ž We knew from the feedback and overwhelming uptake that our proprietary marine lipids in Antinol Rapid alleviated inflammation and oxidative stress - but weโ€™ve never had any published science on how it performs head-to-head with other options including Antinol Original.

๐Ÿค— We are beyond thrilled with this latest research and so proud of the extent of our body of published evidence and studies which now extend across numerous areas of health โ€“ from bone and joint to respiratory to cardiovascular/renal to skin all the way to Neuro and behaviour.

๐Ÿ‘‰ 75 pet dogs with hip OA were assigned randomly into five treatment groups: glucosamine/chondroitin sulphate | Antinol original | Antinol Rapid | Carprofen |Placebo (sunflower oil)

๐Ÿ• All the dogs involved had to meet inclusion criteria covering areas like age, body weight/body condition score and radiographic evidence of OA in one or both hips which were deemed to be painful on examination.

๐Ÿง Prior to starting the 6 week study the dogs were required to have a 2-4 week washout period for NSAIDs/joint supplements and 4 weeks for corticosteroids. During the study no other analgesic therapies were permitted and the diet/daily activities was maintained at the same level through the period.

๐Ÿ”Ž Peak vertical force (PVF) and subjective orthopaedic assessment scores were evaluated before treatment and at weeks 2, 4 and 6 of treatment.

๐Ÿ“Œ Both a positive control (NSAID Carprofen) and a negative control (placebo) were included in order to put PVF changes in the other groups into context.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The goals of OA treatment are to reduce pain, maintain joint function and overall mobility.

At week 2 carprofen demonstrated the fastest improvement in PVF, however at week 4 and after 6 weeks Antinol Rapid led the way with the best increase in PVF followed by Antinol Original and Carprofen โ€“ all groups were significant and significantly higher than the placebo group. The glucosamine group lay between the placebo group and other treatment groups.

๐ŸŒŸ Antinol Rapid and Antinol original but not glucosamine/chondroitin, resulted in significant improvements in PVF from baseline after 4 weeks, and 6 weeks and to a similar degree to that seen with carprofen.

๐Ÿ”Ž The PVF of the placebo group remained unchanged as expected after the study completed.

๐Ÿ”Ž NSAIDs - Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are currently the primary pharmaceutical therapy recommended for dogs with OA(5โ€“7). Carprofen (Rimadylยฎ) is one of the leading NSAIDs used globally (6, 8โ€“10). NSAIDs may cause gastrointestinal ulceration as an adverse effect and are contraindicated in the presence of renal insufficiency (2, 11)However, the true incidence of adverse events is currently unknown (12).

๐Ÿ‘‰ Various combinations of glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin are seen as likely the most common nutraceuticals used in dogs with OA but based on the literature the evidence is mixed.

๐Ÿฉบ PVF โ€“ Peak Vertical force (gait analysis) โ€“ used as the gold standard for determination of functional outcome and as an indirect measure of acute and chronic pain.

Our passion for using Antinol before symptoms present is ongoing โ€“ remembering that with inflammation it is silent until it isnโ€™t and that our dogs, like us, never just go to bed and wake up the next day with a disease.

This rather beautiful ear belongs to Whoopi, one of my very cute patients. ๐Ÿถ

Last month Whoopi decided to grow an extra lumpy bit on her ear and make it nice and red. I think she probably just wanted her own personalised earring๐Ÿ’๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Her lovely human mummy and I though were not convinced this earring/lump was worth keeping and so so had to devise a plan to get rid of itโ€ฆ

As Whoopi is no longer a young pup we figured that having surgery was maybe not our first option. Instead we came up with a custom essential oil blend to help shrink the lump and allow Whoopiโ€™s body to sort it out itself.

Whoopiโ€™s mummy has applied the oils (diluted of course) onto the lump every day for three weeks now - and just look at the results! From big juicy red earring to a shrivelled barely visible thing that gets smaller by the day! The same blend has also got rid of another couple of little lumps elsewhere - one in only 3 days!

So this is why I use essential oils in my practice. Used correctly and safely they are a wonderful adjunct to conventional treatments - I know that Whoopi and her mum certainly think so!

*NOTE: Not all lumps are suitable for essential oil application and some may get worse if treated this way or if the wrong oils are used. Always see a vet if you are worried about a lump on your pet or wish to explore the use of essential oils with animals.

Essential Oils have such a huge number of benefits for both ourselves and our furry friends and I love it when studies prove this! High quality lavender is not only great for stress relief though, it is used to aid healing and also has anti-microbial properties!

Stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue are common among veterinarians. A recent article reported that inhalation of lavender essential oil can help veterinarians cope with stress, counter burnout, and prevent compassion fatigue. I know several aromatic veterinarians that will be happy to see this research.

Storms causing problems? Get the essential oils out ASAP....

๐Ÿถ Topical recipe: 2drops lavender, 2drops vetiver and 2 drops geranium mixed in 1 tbsp of fractionated coconut oil. Apply liberally to your hands and then stroke your doggy along their spine for as long as theyโ€™ll allow.

๐Ÿก Diffuser recipe: 1 drop each of lavender, vetiver, geranium, chamomile and bergamot into a water diffuser. Place somewhere central where your pup will be and diffuse before/during and after the storm.

NOTE: If your pup tries to escape the diffuser or seems distressed by it then switch it off and monitor. For topical treatments if you notice any skin irritation discontinue use and clean the area with fractionated coconut oil to dilute any remaining oils.

Donโ€™t hesitate if I get in touch if you have questions about storm phobias or the use of essential oils in your furry friends!

So much for commercial pet foods being โ€˜complete and balancedโ€™ ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

This recent study in the journal Nature has found a majority of pet foods in the UK to be incomplete and unbalanced.

Evidence like this provides yet another reason to consider feeding a fresh, home prepared, species appropriate diet to our furry friends. This can be raw or cooked - whatever works for you and your pet!

If completely fresh isnโ€™t doable for you then adding in a bit now and again alongside their commercial food is also a great plan!

And always, if you need help or have questions then get in touch! ๐Ÿ˜Š

How does your dog sit?

The earlier we can catch musculoskeletal problems the more we can do - and that doesnโ€™t have tmean drugs or expensive surgeries!

If youโ€™re not sure if your dog sits normally or not why not message me a photo!

Have you ever noticed that your dog is an extremely sloppy sitter? You know that lazy sit where they roll onto one side: the dog equivalent of a slouch?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Itโ€™s certainly not uncommon to see dogs sit like this. But why does it happen and when should you be concerned?

๐Ÿฆด Puppies and young dogs will often sit like this prior to their growth plates fully closing. Because their joints are so flexible and their bones pliable, their ligaments are almost like rubber bands. Puppies and young dogs tend to have less control and awareness over their joints. However this tends to straighten out as the growth plates close.

โžก๏ธ If you have a dog over 18 months of age, a sloppy sit could indicate a few things:

๐Ÿ”ด Joint and muscle imbalances
๐Ÿ”ด A physical condition
๐Ÿ”ด Pain or discomfort
๐Ÿ”ด Being overweight
๐Ÿ”ด A**l gland issues
๐Ÿ”ด Lack of conditioning/ core strength

๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿพโ€โš•๏ธ Touching base with your veterinarian is a good idea if your dog has a sloppy sit to rule out any physical conditions such as hip dysplasia or a luxating patella. They may refer you to a canine physiotherapist to assess and work on a conditioning plan for your dog.

โžก๏ธ A dog should sit squarely, have hips, knees and hocks aligned, legs kept close to the body and positioned equally on both sides.

๐Ÿ‘‰This allows your dog to engage all their knee, thigh and gluteal muscles properly when standing up.
Why does this matter?

โŒStanding up from a poor sitting position applies greater forces to the knees and hocks and doesn't activate the correct muscles.

๐ŸงWhen was the last time you observed your dog's posture when sitting?

๐Ÿ”Ž If youโ€™ve got a puppy youโ€™ve probably heard the term โ€œprotect their growth platesโ€, but what does this really mean and what exercise is appropriate for a puppy?

๐Ÿ‘‰Growth plates are the soft areas located at the ends of your puppyโ€™s long bones. Theyโ€™re made up of cartilage, a rubbery, flexible material. Each long bone has at least two growth plates, one at each end. Their job is to be filled with cells that allow your puppy's bones to become longer and dense; the way these cells work is by dividing themselves until they fill the growth plate.

๐Ÿ”Ž It is important to understand, that until the growth plates close, theyโ€™re soft and vulnerable to injury. After sexual maturity which usually occurs around 12-18 months, the growth plates calcify, and the rapid cell division ends. The growth plate becomes a stable, inactive, part of the bone, now known as an โ€˜epiphyseal lineโ€™.

๐Ÿ”Ž Bones are held together with soft tissue such as muscles, ligaments and tendons. For adult dogs that experience joint stress from bending, twisting or rotating too much, the bones remain firm and the soft tissue is pulled away, resulting in a sprain.

๐Ÿ‘‰For puppies, the soft tissue is stronger than the bones and instead of a simple strain or sprain, the growth plate is more susceptible to be injured. Injuries to growth plates may not heal in time for the puppyโ€™s growth and may alter the way in which the puppy grows. It is also possible that the injured growth plates grow at a slower rate resulting in one side developing differently. Shorter limbs can create incorrect angles to a joint and can make the puppy more susceptible to injuries as an adult dog. It's vitally important therefore that the growth of all bones is synchronized and happens at the same rate.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The most common ways that puppies experience growth plate injuries are from falling, twisting, slipping and sliding. Another contributing factor to growth plate damage is repetitive concussive exercise such as jogging or running on footpaths or pavements. The repetitive impact can damage to tissues that protect the joints.

โŒ Without bubble wrapping your puppy, there are some activities that are considered inappropriate when it comes to exercising your puppy. Here are some of the activities you should avoid:
- Jumping on/ off couches or beds
- Jumping in and out of car boots
- Running around on slippery surfaces
- Roughhousing with other dogs
- Continuous ball throwing
- Jogging/ running on hard surfaces
- Long on-lead walks
- Long hikes
- Climbing up and down stairs

๐Ÿง A 2012 study found that โ€œpuppies walking on stairs from birth to 3 months of age had an increased risk of developing hip dysplasiaโ€. These findings donโ€™t indicate that puppies must avoid stairs until growth plate closure, but consideration needs to be applied, especially to puppies under 4 months of age.

๐Ÿ• Exercise is super important for young dogs. It helps them develop body awareness, stay healthy and an important part of their development.

๐Ÿ‘‰Some activities that are beneficial to puppies are:

- Self- directed play
- Proprioception exercises like walking on different surfaces
- Off lead play with dogs that arenโ€™t too rough
- Soft games of tug play
- Training
- Mental stimulation
- Free play for short periods of time
- Digging

๐Ÿ• Generally speaking, the guide for street walking is around 5 minutes of walking per month of age. So, if your puppy is 4 months old, a 20 minute street walk is an adequate amount.

๐Ÿง The question is, why even care about growth plates? Sometimes it can seem all a bit excessive.

๐Ÿ’ช When we aspire to Be Better we change what we have previously done to achieve better results and in turn we create better longevity for our dogs. Being knowledgeable about growth plate development helps set our dogs up for better joint mobility in the future.

Hot off the press is a post with some info on parasite control, and natural ways to help keep your dog free of fleas, ticks and worms! Definitely worth a read (tho clearly I'm biased!) whether you use conventional treatment such as Nexguard, choose natural options or don't use anything at all!

Dr Alison talks about parasite control in dogs and the use of natural repellents vs conventional pesticides

Did you know that rats make excellent pets for children? These two little guys recently joined our family and will be teaching my youngest son about being a pet parent!

Rats are incredibly intelligent and huge amounts of fun. They are trainable using either food rewards (they love fresh fruit and veggies) or a clicker - just the same as dogs! Rats appreciate a large cage with places to hide, stuff to dig in and toys to explore. Letting them out every day to explore your home is also great stimulation for their active little bodies and brains.

I love treating pocket pets so let me know if you have any questions about rats or any other their other small furry friends!

A GIFT OF OILY GOODNESS ๐Ÿ˜

This beautiful handmade blend was gifted to me by a wonderful client yesterday - how lucky am I?! It smells divine AND contains some powerful essential oils, which I thought I would tell you about...

๐ŸŒบ Geranium - as well as smelling gorgeous, this oil can help support animals with anxiety, skin issues, liver issues and hormonal disturbances. I will often have geranium diffusing at home and also use it in pet massage blends or grooming sprays.

๐ŸŒผ Galbanum - used in biblical times as well as by the ancient Egyptians, this is a powerful oil. It isn't used extensively with animals at present due to high levels of certain components. It is used in several rather fancy human perfumes though, to provide an earthy-woodland scent.

๐ŸŒธ Cistus - also known as Rock Rose, this oil is most commonly used to support animals with bleeding issues. It also smells beautiful so is definitely something to pop into the diffuser if you can get hold of it!

*REMEMBER TO ALWAYS FOLLOW VETERINARY GUIDANCE WHEN USING ESSENTIAL OILS WITH ANIMALS & ONLY USE HIGH QUALITY OILS*
