'Turtle in the Lily Forest | Cenote Aktun Ha, Mexico

A red eared slider turtle thriving amongst the water lillies of a Mexican cenote. This species of turtle is the most traded in the world, with their popularity as pets carrying them to across the globe. Sadly subsequent pet release has also led to them becoming one of the most invasive species in the world, causing a myriad of issues for the local ecosystems. The import of red eared sliders is now illegal in the European Union and Australia, with other areas preparing to follow suit. I was glad to find this individual within its native region and a natural environment, swimming beneath a beautiful canopy of pink-hued lily pads.
