The all important foaling kit...!

When foaling down, getting together a foaling kit is a great way to ensure you have all the essentials on hand and reduce stress.

Below are a few suggestions on what to include in your foaling kit..
- towels
- vetwrap/cling wrap/ tailwrap or bandage to wrap the tail.
- a light/torch or headlamp.
- scissors or a blade
- umbilical clamp
- exam gloves
- re**al sleves
- lubricant
- more towels
- bucket for warm water
- navel dip/spray for the foal umbilicus- we recommend a dilute iodine solution.

For the seasoned, more experienced foaler
- colostrum refractometer
- mare pain relief
- foaling chains, ropes and handles.
- foal resus kit- purchasable from Minitube.

During the foaling down/labour process we recommend taking note of the following..
- time mares water broke if observed and the colour.
- time mare started contractions and how often
- time foal arrived
- time foal sits in sternal position and is alert
- time foal has its first drink
- the appearance of the mares colostrum if you dont have a refractometer.

All of this information is very important if veterinary intervention is needed in the following hours/early days.

Remember 1, 2, 3...
Your foal should be born within or very close to the 1 hour mark, it should be standing up and drinking within or very close to the 2 hour mark and passing that all important first "poo"/meconium in 3 hours.

Let the season begin!!!

There are many of our beautiful mares expecting this season and as we eagerly await the arrival of our new babies we thought it a great idea to take you through those all important preparations...

Firstly, know your estimated due date.

- This can be calculated approximately 340 days from the confirmed ovulation date.
- As you get to know your mare better, you'll start to learn if she is an early, ontime or late mare in reference to her estimated due date.

Prepare where your mare will foal down, is this at home or elsewhere?
- Somewhere else, ensure you are confirmed and know when you mare should be there prior to her estimated due date.
- At Home, start to think about where on your property, be it paddock or stable.

PADDOCK FOALING
- pick a nice safe paddock, nice and flat, easy access and good fencing.
- most mares will love a nice soft bed of straw too.

STABLE FOALING
- Great to have this as an option of you live in a cold area with a lot of rainfall.
- Dry bedding, straw is my preferred option when foaling in a stable.

Pre foaling husbandry.
- Does your mare have a caslick?, this needs to be removed prior to foaling.
- Tetanus protection, when was the last time your mare was given a tetanus injection?
- Worm with Ivermecton based product.

Setup your foaling kit.. and have your vets phone number ready.

Enjoy these special moments...

Did you know that NEVS has a state of the art surgery facility right here in ballarat??
This horse sustained a nasty Pastern fracture in a paddock tumble, our very own DR Gray went on to repair the fracture in surgery, the horse was placed in a cast and healed beautifully within a matter of weeks and months with careful rehab thereafter.

For any and all surgery enquiries please contact Dr Sarah Gray at NEVS

*Graphic Warning*

Sometimes accidents happen especially with our 4 legged friends, this patient sustained a nasty laceration to the head recently.
Dr Gray assessed the wound then clipped and cleaned. Sutures and a drain was placed as well as a course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory medications were given.

This is an example of why "young grasshoppers" should keep their feet on the ground..

The drain was removed and all healed well.

Great to see this lady and her bab out having paddock time after a week in the hospital. Great team work getting this gal through some very touch and go times with severe post foaling complications. 💪

"There is always a touch of happiness when a champion mare has her first foal enter a sale ring and the 2024 Nutrien Melbourne Yearling Sale will see Dance Craze’s first foal, a filly by the outstanding French trotter Bold Eagle, offered by Pat Driscoll’s Yabby Dam Farms."

Foals are on the way!

ARE YOU PREPARED?

Foaling down is a critical part of the journey & the stakes are high - things can go wrong very quickly & if not prepared, breeders can face losing a foal or mare - or both. Even if both survive, their ongoing health, soundness and fertility can be affected.

For this reason, HBV strongly encourage the use of dedicated breeding agistment farms or studs. If this is not possible though, breeders should form a strong relationship with the closest veterinary practice very early in the breeding process.

Breeders should also make sure - well in advance of the big day - that they are familiar with some of the interventions available if something goes wrong, and when to perform them. The use of foaling alarms is also important - you can’t support the process if you don’t know it’s happening!

While nothing compares to experience and having the right resources at hand, HBV hope that this library can support your breeding journey: https://hbv.org.au/foaling-down

Although I only met Dean a couple of times I remember him well and it brings a smile to my face. My dearest condolences for his wife and young children, his parents and of course the huge network of close friends and colleagues. A huge loss for all xx

Vale Dean Holland

The whole McEvoy Mitchell Racing team sends their condolences to Dean’s wife Lucy and their four children. Parents Darren & Belinda and all extended family and friends.

Dean was an integral part of our team, all the staff loved having him around. The laughs and smiles he brought us all were priceless. He was a much loved member of the McEvoy Mitchell team and will be sadly missed.

Rest easy Deano ❤️
