GREYHOUNDS IN REGIONAL AUSTRALIA
Greyhounds in regional Australia are regularly taken to vets for euthanising when they don't make the grade or their racing days are over. If they are "lucky", they are dumped at the local pound. MAKING A DIFFERENCE
To

date we have endeavoured to rehome as many dogs as possible, within our limited financial and manpower capacity. Due to the very nature of our rescue locations being predominantly regional, the costs incurred for transport and temporary kennelling can be extremely limiting for us financially. As such, we rely significantly on the generosity of donations. MAKE A GIFT

🎇 The New Year’s Eve countdown to 2025 is nearly upon us which can be a particularly stressful time for dogs and their guardians.

But we’re here to help! We’ve put together some handy tips to help keep your dog calm through any loud noises and scary sounds like fireworks or thunder 🥹

Remember, particularly for New Year’s Eve fireworks, to make sure:

🎆your property is secured (windows closed, no gaps in fences)
🎆your dog’s microchip is up to date
🎆 your dog is wearing an identification collar with an up to date phone number

🧡and most importantly, offer plenty of comfort

↗️ Do you know a recently adopted hound spending their first NYE in a home? Tag them to share these tips!

To our most amazing community, we send the biggest ✨THANK YOU✨! We have so much greytitude for the way you have shown up for us, and these noodles-in-need!

From offers of transport, generous donations, social media shares to help us get the word out, and of course all the applications to foster; we are simply blown away, we called and you all answered 🧡

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, we can’t spell rescue without U! So from the bottom of our very full hearts, thank you so much.

⭐️ Please note our Coordinators are busily processing applications as quickly as possible (we’re so sorry small animal homes, this rescue we cannot risk fresh fosters who are not tested going into environments where there are cats or small dogs), everyone who has dropped us a line should hear back in the coming days. We are still negotiating numbers but the first of the Maffra crew are booked in for desexing and then will start arriving in care in January.

We cannot wait to share those with you all!

Gumtree Greys has been contacted by a greyhound trainer in poor health who can no longer care for his dogs.

There are over 20 dogs on his property. Gumtree Greys has negotiated taking 7* of the dogs so far, but may be able to take more if we can find more foster carers.
We are reaching out to our Melbourne-based community to find as many foster carers as possible to secure these dogs’ futures.

We support our foster carers:

✅ All costs covered, including food, bedding, vet bills or any needed medications they may need during their time with you
✅ Access to an on-call coordinator who will check in regularly with you
✅ A comprehensive foster guide 1-on-1 behaviour consults
✅ Access to our community group of foster carers and adopters

*Since posting one of the original 7 greyhounds on our list has been moved to another property to be broken in for racing.

T’was the night before Christmas, and our Coordinators are finally getting ready to enjoy a few days of rest (with their hardworking greyndeer) 🦌✨ but what a wonderful way to wrap up, with the last few days full of GG family and cute snoots!

🎁 Saturday we celebrated our last Carlton Market for 2024, fosters Penny and Pete wowed the crowds, and our handsome big black boy may have won the heart of a forever family 🤞 our youngest fosters Puppy Rocket and Puppy James also stopped by to show off their growth spurts!
🎄Sunday was our community Christmas brunch, hosted by Brian (with the help of almost-birthday-boy Toby, and foster Peter) and we enjoyed a lovely picnic together while the hounds alternated naps and socialising. Fosters Peaches and Orla enjoyed showing off the shiny coats they are growing in
⭐️ Sunday was also the start of an ambitious rescue mission with Julia and Kit clocking 400kms to meet some very special snoots. Those of you who receive our newsletter would have already read about the ‘Maffra 7’ - and we’ll be sharing more information via socials over the coming days 👀 so stay tuned!

And with that, from our family to yours, have a wonderful Christmas to all who celebrate. We hope that your day is filled with good food, good people, and hopefully a good dog or two! 🎅🏼 We’ll see you all on the other side.

While our 2024 ‘Wrapped’ could focus on the negatives, like the countless dogs still on our waitlist (or how long that wait has become!), we’ve chosen to celebrate the incredible wins that a volunteer-powered and ethically funded rescue can achieve with community support.

This post is a greyt big thank you to the extraordinary Gumtree Greys family which spans states (and countries), and without which, our rescue efforts would not be possible 🧡 so whether you’re a foster carer, an adopter, a hard working volunteer, a generous donor, a business who partners with us, a market stallholder who supports our volunteers and ambassadogs with freebies each Saturday, or simply someone who engages with us on social media, THANK YOU!

Because of all of you, this year we have been able to welcome 50 dogs into the program (in what has been one of the most challenging years in rescue), and with your help we rehabilitated and personally matched 41 hounds to their loving forever homes, with a few lucky new arrivals spending their first Christmas in foster while they write to Santa (or Uncle Brian) about their perfect people.

As the new year approaches, we hope that you’ll make a resolution to join our inclusive and supportive community in 2025. To find out more, fill in a foster or adoption enquiry form via our website, or shoot us a message learn about how you can make a positive difference for noodles-in-need.

It's time for a Foster Friday update, and this one is a baby Rocket check in 🧡 now over 90% legs, this lanky lad is entering his teenager phase, and thanks to the efforts of Basil, his amazing foster pawrents, and Melissa from Paws and Praise, he is growing into the sweetest, snuggliest snoot with exceptional manners! We are continuing to monitor his condition and for now he is a happy and healthy boy.

🐾 This year we have welcomed a record number of high needs dogs into our program, from complex medical cases to behavioural rehabilitation, and while we greatly appreciate the support of our myriad of specialist services and professionals, the cost of care starts to add up at this time of year!

If you'd like to help us to help houndies, every dollar counts and all donations over $2 are tax deductible.

No hat, no play, no Coburg Market tomorrow!

With the coming days set to be scorchers in Melbourne, we have cancelled our appearance at to keep our hounds (and humans) safe & cool.

Looking to survive the heat? Here are our top tips:

🥵 Having a low body fat percentage puts houndies at risk of heat stress, so on days with high temperatures/humidity, try walking around dawn or dusk when there’s not too much bright sun
🥵 Remember that concrete & asphalt retain *and* vent heat after a day of blazing sun, so always check the temperature of a surface, even in the cooler afternoon/evening
🥵  Shoes might protect a paw pad from a hot surface, but they also cover up one of the only areas dogs can vent heat, impacting their ability to regulate; keep a close eye on those snooties in booties
🥵  For short periods of relief (in dry heat/low humidity), try evaporative cooling by soaking a in cool water
🥵  Use a pet approved sunscreen on noses, bellies, tips of ears & any area where the fur has thinned or is non-existent (yes, that includes the balding thigh). This is particularly important for those melanin-challenged houndies! Dog sunscreens shouldn’t contain zinc oxide, or para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). If you’re unsure on what to use, chat with your vet
🥵  Some sun-loving houndies have absolutely no willpower when it comes to solar-charging & can easily overheat while snoozing in a bright spot. Closely supervise sunbaking snoots, & encourage them inside before those temps get too high
🥵  Reduce the length of walks & up the at home enrichment. Foraging games and puzzle toys under the fan or air-con are always lots of fun, but a frozen treat can really hit the spot! Lickmats & Kongs can be popped into the freezer, or DIY some pupsicles using an ice cube tray, a little bone broth, & a handful of your dog’s favourite treats
🥵  Hot weather can impact appetite, so if you find your houndie a bit off their food try a few smaller/wetter meals, especially for our super seniors who tend to really feel that warmer weather. A bit of oat or coconut milk on top of kibble can get things going
