Greyhounds in regional Australia are regularly taken to vets for euthanising when they don't make the grade or their racing days are over. If they are "lucky", they are dumped at the local pound. MAKING A DIFFERENCE

date we have endeavoured to rehome as many dogs as possible, within our limited financial and manpower capacity. Due to the very nature of our rescue locations being predominantly regional, the costs incurred for transport and temporary kennelling can be extremely limiting for us financially. Cute snoots with a side of sunshine is the perfect reason to get out of the house, so join us tomorrow, Saturday 16 November, at our regular Carlton pop up ☀️

It was a successful expansion of our busy social calendar this weekend, as we added a walk in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens to our regular rotation of events 🧡 16 houndies brought their humans along to promenade in the gorgeous spring sunshine (and in true greyhound fashion, round things out with a nap in the cool grass).

Puppy Rocket was a star, with he and his foster brother .thegreyt charming everyone and showing off their skills of being the goodest and most handsome boys; and Fitzroy joined us for hopefully his last public appearance as a foster, as he begins an adoption trial this week 🤞 it was a delight to see so many cute snoots, and the theme of the day was "black and white" as the group was exclusively cowhounds and black beauties, not a brindle or a blue in sight!

Our events are a greyt way to socialise and make new mates, hounds from all programs are welcome, and of course hound-less humans are always encouraged to come along for pats and chats 📆 so join us at one of the following:

Ever wondered about what it’s like to be a foster carer for a rescue greyhound?

Repeat foster carer and ’s mum Bex shares what she was thinking about for the first few days that foster Honey was in her home.

Foster carers provide a vital role in helping newly rescued dogs figure out pet life before they’re adopted. They’re well-supported by Gumtree Greys coordinators for advice as well as funds for things like bedding or food to make sure finances aren’t a barrier to getting involved.

We desperately need foster carers though, we have over 45 dogs currently in racing kennels waiting for an available foster carer.

Sweet, introverted senior, seeks quiet home in the suburbs for snoozes and snuggles! 🧡

After nearly eight years in the industry, Kelly is finally getting to experience life as a well loved pet; and although it is wonderful, it is also very overwhelming!

🌿 Kelly is an excellent companion on strolls along quiet trails or through parks, and loves to get out in nature, but is easily spooked by buses, trucks, and other dogs. Busy streets can overwhelm her (she will freeze or panic and pull to go back in the direction she came), and she struggles to calm down upon arriving back home after stressful encounters with a bit of pacing and panting, this is improving with anti-anxiety medication, and we expect that we will see this behaviour ease as she adjusts to all the excitement of a new home. Although Kelly can be social and sweet meeting new people out on walks, she is wary of them inside her home, and is not a gregarious host preferring to completely avoid guests in favour of seeking out a safe space away from the action.

Kelly’s foster carers describe her as a beautiful quiet soul, and while she is shy, she becomes extremely affectionate once she is comfortable with you and really enjoys her snuggles. When asked about her personality they said, “She has such a sweet temperament and is happy watching you as you do activities around the house. While she is a nervous girl, she will let you know when she is struggling and needs a time out."

🙏 Underneath her striking appearance is a heart of gold and so much love waiting to be given, Kelly hopes that her perfect people will see past the things that she finds scary in this world and provide her with the secure and loving home she deserves.

Prepare for trouble, and make it double! ⭐️ Team Rocket delighted at Coburg Farmers Market this weekend, with our little four month old joined by eight month old James; both young lads showed off the skills they are learning in foster care as they prepare to look for their forever homes - handling the hustle and bustle of the market with confidence and ease!

🧡 Foster Fitzroy charmed his potential new people and is off for an official meet and greet next week, while foster Tyson made lots of friends and displayed his wonderful social skills and sweet temperament! At the opposite end of the puppy spectrum, seven year old foster girl Alicia (who has had sixteen puppies of her own) held court with visitors ensuring she received her share of the fuss and smooches.

✨ Ambassadogs Toby and Shadow were exhausted after being the best bois for a whole market shift and had a little spoon in the boot of the car as things wound down, and dynamic duo Ruby and Doch delighted in Auntie/Uncle duties with Rocket. Big foster brother Basil kept an eye on his little charge, and lead by example as he relaxed on the edge of the action.

🐾 Thanks to the magic of Puppy Power, we had many visitors throughout the day, and it was wonderful to welcome old friends and new to enjoy the glorious sunshine and for many a little lay down in the cool grass.

Baby rocket update 🧡 he has reached the "mostly legs" stage of puppy growth!

We're so greytful to Basil and his humans for all their patience and efforts socialising and raising the little one 🐾 Rocket is still undergoing diagnostics for his health before we can start considering what his perfect forever home looks like, but in the meantime he's been dipping into our account for puppy school, vet visits, and an upcoming echocardiogram and the costs are adding up!

Personal space? 🧡 Yes, personally Tyson would prefer to be in your space.

This sweet little snuggler loves affection and has a very lapdog attitude despite his size, after all, at not yet two years old he's just a little (36kg) baby! Tyson adores his humans and would prefer an arrangement of WFH, or perhaps a dog friendly office? He's still working on being calm when his beloved people leave, with time and medication he is making big improvements, but he's not ready to be left for long hours.

Tyson is currently in care with a female hound, and would love a calm and confident medium to large canine in his forever home to model those good behaviours as he continues to mature. He still has a lot of boisterous puppy energy though, so he'll need a tolerant playmate.

While he is still working on his jumpy and mouthy excited behaviours, Tyson is smart boy who picks up cues very quickly, he has also mastered stairs, and is growing in confidence with novel environments (although sometimes these can be a bit scary at first). In a patient and loving home, this affectionate and sweet young lad will blossom - and he has so many years of the good life ahead of him!

The ruled this weekend's Carlton Farmers Market 🖤 with old faces and new coming together to share treats, beds, and a snuggle or two.

⭐️ Puppy James delighted the crowd with his best kangaroo impression; a big happy boi with lots of springy energy to spare (and more growing to do!) he will thrive in a busy and active home, which he will be looking for very soon!

🧡 Fosters Fonzie, Timmy, and Fitzroy were excellent greeters, making visitors feel welcomed and walking them through the customs check process where many sniffs are required of all pockets and bags that might contain market treats such as Back Alley Bakes croissants!

Ambassadogs Cosmo and Shadow held court in the van, Jayce napped through the early shift, Clodagh enjoyed chasing the sun around several prime nap spots, and Toby, Doch, and Ruby worked the crowd between sussing out the best beds!

🐾 We were so delighted to have a steady stream of human and hound visitors (including Buddy's Mum all the way from Canberra to get her hound fix!), and we hope to see everyone again soon at one of our Melbourne Farmers Markets appearances.

New program arrival Alicia heard that our puppies have been very popular. So she'd like to let you know that she had 16(!) of them across 4 litters in the last 3 years, and at 7 years old she is finally getting a taste of the good life! ⭐️

Being rescued is just The Best Thing Ever to this gorgeous sugar snoot 🧡 Alicia's tail is almost always on the go, doing big happy wags, and she's already roaching after just a few days in her foster home. After all, what's not to love about this new life? Starting with Freedom Nuggets, there's now toys, soft beds, lovely sniffy walks, plus a foster brother to use as a sunhat!

Adopting a senior can be so rewarding, if you've welcomed an older dog into your heart and home we'd love to hear your stories in the comments! 🙏

Brand new arrival, and resident unicorn, Rocket was caught out in the cold snap yesterday (it's supposed to be Spring, Melbourne!) ❄️

Luckily thanks to his foster brother Basil, and quick thinking foster Mum, he had a fashion forward fit as sunny as his little personality ☀️ and we hear that there might be some small-boi sized Houndtees on the way now!

It's been a busy week for Foster Coordinator Fi, with more new arrivals to welcome with their Freedom Nuggets (as is the tradition for every foster about to begin their life as a well loved pet with our program!).

This pair of supawmodels have come in on a 'Foster to Adopt' arrangement with Avril and Geoff who sadly lost their beloved Willow just over a year ago, and are ready to open their hearts and their home again.

🧡 Olive is the younger of the two, blue brindle, just 18 months old and has never set foot on a track. She’s very sweet but shy, and preferred her nuggets dropped in front of her as opposed to hand fed.

🧡 Golden girl Maple has raced 3 times only, 3 years old and a very confident girl so no doubt will help her new sister to settle in. She was a pro with her nuggets.

151 horses lost their lives on Australian racetracks between 1 August 2023 and 31 July 2024. 116 greyhounds have lost their lives on Australian racetracks in 2024 so far. That’s not including the animals that the industry discards in the tens of thousands every year, branded “wastage”, no longer fit to risk their lives for a flutter.
