It is that time a year again - time to start looking at stallion choices for the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒/𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 season.

🌱 Let go of the chaff!

🌾 Chaff, whether it is lucerne, oaten, wheaten, or a combination of these things, is essentially rough cut or finely chopped hay. Chaff is a staple in so many Australian horse’s diets because we’ve been led to believe that it’s necessary… it’s not!

🌱 Horses essentially make their own chaff through chewing pasture &/or hay, which is SO much more beneficial for their dental and digestive health as long-stemmed roughage takes them longer to masticate and therefore results in the production of increased saliva which is packed full of essential digestive enzymes that aid to enzymatically break down digesta in the stomach.

🌾 I come across so many diets that consist of large quantities of chaff, and in most cases it is simply unnecessary, expensive, and wasting precious digestive capacity. In comparison to other feed sources, chaff rarely provides the same concentration of calories per kilogram. A brief example of this is that prime lucerne chaff provides around 9mj/kg, beet pulp provides around 11mj/kg, and cracked lupins provide around 12mj/kg. The difference doesn’t sound like much on paper, but when you have a horse who is struggling to gain or maintain weight, you’d be much better off feeding 500g of beet pulp or cracked lupins as opposed to 500g of prime lucerne chaff.

🌱 Of course, there are always exceptions to this rule, such as horses with access to no pasture or hay (drought conditions), or those with poor dentition that reduces their ability to graze and masticate longer stemmed roughage. I rarely have an issue with feeding small quantities of chaff where it’s purpose is to bind supplements in a meal, improve the essential amino acid or nutrient profile of a diet, or make a meal more palatable; however, what I don’t encourage is feeding chaff as a means of weight gain. Hay is so much more beneficial for this purpose.

🌾 The stomach of the horse is small in relation to the size of the animal and makes up only 10% of the capacity of the digestive system. Feeds that are too large or bulky such as those that contain kilograms of chaff are likely to be pushed out of the stomach prematurely, reducing the amount of enzymatic digestion the horse is able to conduct prior to digesta entering the small intestine. When feeding for weight gain, small, often, and calorie-dense is advisable in order for the horse to make the most out of their meal (and your money).

🌱 There has also been some theories shared that rough cut chaff may be counterproductive for horses who suffer with Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome with concern that the stalky and sharp edges may irritate or inflict pain when coming into contact with gastric lesions or ulcers. Feeding soft, leafy hay is therefore advisable and has the added bonus of promoting increased saliva production which = increased digestive enzymes to buffer gastric acid which = a less acidic and more soothing environment for the stomach.

Do you ever get warm & fuzzy vibes when you hear a feel good horse story?! Well this one is no exception… I made the hard decision late last year to sell my beloved mare, Honey 🍯 . We are taking a short break from breeding and I knew she was destined for more than just sitting in my paddock for the occasional ride! That being said, I was determined to be very fussy and find her the most perfect home 🏡

Miss Honey is one of those horses with the kindest eyes and the biggest heart 💜 she has the most gentle way of interacting with all people but she has a soft spot for the little ones, and she has always been one to take everything in around her and react in a considerate and mature manner. We have had many fun years together but now it is time for her to teach the next generation how special it is to have a horse by your side. They say there is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man 🙌🏼

I feel so blessed that this family has found Honey, they met her as she was down south with her latest foal (Ariat) and it has been a true love story ever since 💕 bought primarily for Mum to enjoy, she also has two adorable sidekicks to dote on her - and every horse deserves to be loved by a little girl, Honey is just lucky that she gets two 👭🏼

Just shy of 5mths old, this little ripper has started her halter training and getting ready for branding and weaning in the coming months. Honey will then come back in to work and be offered for sale as a riding horse/broodmare. Watch this space!

We got many superstars out of this girl and are very excited to hear that she is once again confirmed pregnant to Chansit Rune for an August 2022 baby. She is now with the wonderful Donna at Clairdon Australian Stock Horse Stud but we just love staying in touch with all our wonderful horses 💜
