FRIENDLY REMINDER

Seeing as the weather is getting quite hot can we remember that our fur babies overheat quite quickly and to not walk them in the scorching heat try later in the afternoon when the road and weather isn’t burning hot, if you want to know if the road is cooler place your hand on the road and if it’s too hot for your hand it’s to hot for your pups foot. Remember to keep extra water out for wildlife as well as your pets.

MUD

We just finished this project so I had to do a quick post.

We had some torrential downpours at the end of last week and over the weekend. Most of our property drains really well, fortunately! But to get our hay hut as far from the water source as possible, we had to put it at the bottom of our track hill. This is GREAT for movement between resources and getting them up and down the hill all day long, not so great for mud when it rains.

I’ve been eyeing Mud Control Grids for months, and this weekend sealed the deal. Huge shoutout to Jen Foxwell of Grid as New, Mud Control Grids because I texted her in a panic with the “before” picture Saturday, and she brought me over 60 grids on Sunday- even on Father’s Day!

We set them up today and we (and the horses) are super impressed. It took us less than hour to lay down 60 of these grids and the horses instantly used them.

I know a lot of my UK friends have them- has anyone tried them before? I’d love to see pictures of how you use them so I can get ideas for my next project ☺️🫣

!!!HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR GARDEN!!!
The following plants can have toxic effects on your Daschaund

- ALOE VERA– Commonly used to treat burns, but be aware it is toxic to your dachshund. Symptoms can include vomiting, depression, discolouration of urine and muscle tremours.

– AMARYLLIS – The bulbs are the most toxic component to this plant. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea, hyper salivation, lethargy, muscle tremours, anorexia and severe pain when the abdomen is touched.

– AUTUMN CROCUS – Highly toxic plant. Symptoms can include vomiting (blood may be present), diarrhoea, shock, inability to regulate body temperature and bone marrow suppression.

– AZALEA/RHODODENDRON – This plant can severely disrupt cardiac function, which can result in a coma, or even death. Initial symptoms can include hyper salivation, vomiting, diarrhoea, depression of the central nervous system and lethargy.

– BRUNFELSIA/ Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow– Very poisonous, especially in puppies. If your dachshund ingests this plant (along with the fruit that follows the flowering stage), it can be fatal. Symptoms can include vomiting, fever, muscle tremours, seizures and paralysis.

– CHRYSANTHEMUM – A naturally occurring pesticide, toxic to your dachshund. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, hyper salivation, wobbliness and lethargy.

– CYCLAMEN – A very toxic plant which can result in death if ingested, the roots especially. Symptoms can include persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and cardiac dysfunction.

– DAFFODILS – The bulb especially. Symptoms can include diarrhoea, vomiting, wobbliness, loss of consciousness, coma and even death.

– ENGLISH IVY – A plant that is toxic through the leaves, along with the berries. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea, hyper salivation and pain in the abdomen, which can be detected by your dachshund hunching, or upon touch.

– HOLLY – Highly toxic berries, which can be fatal if only a small amount is digested by even large dogs. Imagine the effects they could have on your dachshund. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea, painful abdomen, wobbliness, loss of consciousness, coma and death.

– HYDRANGEA -This dangerous flower effects the gastro intestinal functions in your dachshund. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration and lethargy.

– LILLIES – The entire plant is toxic, not only to your dachshund but especially to cats. Symptoms can include vomiting, inappetence, depression and a lack of urination, as it attacks the kidneys.

– MADAGASCAR JASMINE – The seed pods of this plant are especially dangerous.

– NIGHTSHADE – Toxicity comes from the berries and leaves. Symptoms can include vomiting, painful abdomen, wobbliness, muscle tremours, respiratory distress and cardiac failure.

– OLEANDER – Every part of this plant is toxic to your dachshund. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea, wobbliness, inability to breathe properly, seizures, inability to regulate body temperature and cardiac dysfunction which can lead to death.

– PHILODENDRON – This plant can incur mild to severe effects on your dachshund if ingested. Symptoms can include vomiting, inappetence, swelling of the face, foaming of the mouth and respiratory difficulties.

– SAGO PALM – The Sago Palm is so dangerous, that all it takes is a couple of seeds to be swallowed for it to have damaging effects on your dachshund. Symptoms can include gastro intestinal problems such as vomiting, diarrhoea, liver failure (causing a yellow discolouration of the skin and mucous membranes) seizures and blood in the faeces.

– TULIP – Be especially careful of the bulb, as this part contains the most toxins. Symptoms can include gastro intestinal problems such as vomiting, diarrhoea, hyper salivation, inappetence, convulsions and cardiac dysfunction.

– WANDERING JEW – A very persistent w**d that can be very difficult to remove. It causes an allergic reaction, most commonly on your dachshunds stomach, as these low riders are so close to the ground. It can be impossible for them not to come in to contact with it. It can also effect the elbows, chin and groin areas. The rash caused by Wandering Jew can later manifest in to very sore calluses, due to incessant scratching, which in turn can lead to bacterial infections.

– WISTERIA – Symptoms can include vomiting (blood may be present), diarrhoea and depression.

– YELLOW OLEANDER – Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea and decreased heart rate.

– YEW – This toxic plant has been known to result in death after ingestion. Symptoms can include vomiting, muscle tremours, seizures, inability to breathe, wobbliness and finally heart failure.

For those of you who don’t know or are new to the page my name is Kaitlin or Kate I am the owner of the business I started my business when I was 18 years old as I have a love of animals and decided to start my own business.
The love of animals began when I was 4 years old from growing up with sheep, chickens, cats, rabbits, birds. You name it we more than likely had it lol. I have a little dog myself he is a Pomeranian x toy poodle he is 11 years old and my partner has a border collie x kelpie who is one. Sometimes you might see her come with me on some jobs but not often, she like to help sometimes especially if there is rabbits lol we also have 2 rabbits Rocco and coco we have 2 horses Jethro and Clover our 2 dogs which I mentioned previously are River (border collie) and Lucus (pom x) so you can probably say we have a zoo. Here are some pictures of us and our little fur family.

Sometimes, we see pet owners who are concerned that their cat, dog, or rabbit is drinking too much.

💧How much is too much?
💧How do you measure water intake?
💧What does it mean if they drink too much?

Read on, my friend, for answers. And post in the comments if you have any questions.

💦 How much is too much?
Animals need to drink water to stay hydrated, just as we do. Water is needed to deliver vital nutrients to bodily organs, regulate temperature, support brain function, lubricate the joints, and aid digestion and waste disposal. But how much is too much?

Dogs: A general rule of thumb is that your dog is drinking too much if he drinks more than 100ml/kg/day. That’s the equivalent of a 20kg kelpie drinking more than 2L (the volume of your standard icecream tub) in a day.

Cats: If your cat is drinking more than 50mls/kg/day, she is drinking too much.

Rabbits: If your rabbit is drinking more than 150mls/kg/day, then this could be a cause for concern.

Puppies, kittens and very active pets may consume more than this amount.

💦 How do you measure their water intake?
At the start of the day, measure how much water is in your pet’s water bowl. Make sure this is their only water source (you may need to restrict access to other sources such as fountains or fish ponds), and that they have free access to it.

Before refilling the bowl 24 hours later, measure how much has been drunk overnight. Of course, if you need to refill it at any point, measure how much water you add.

Measure this amount each day for a week to work out the average daily water intake for your pet.

💦 What if my pet is drinking too much?
Excessive water intake, known as polydipsia, can be suggestive of a more serious problem. Common causes are: diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and cushings. Polydipsia can also be a side effect of some medications, as well as a sign of behavioural disorders associated with stress, boredom or attention seeking behaviour.

💦 My pet has polydipsia, what now?
The first thing to do is take your pet to your local vet. They can help investigate your concerns by performing a physical exam and collecting blood and urine samples. Depending on these results, an additional blood test or imaging (such as an X-ray or ultrasound) may be advised.

Remember, early diagnosis and treatment = better outcome for your pets.

Just a reminder that the days are getting hotter and to remember to leave out extra bowls of water. And if you’re going to walk your dog make sure it’s in the cooler part of the day when the ground isn’t as hot..

DONT leave dogs in the hot car..
