🌞🐾 Hot Weather Alert: Keep Your Pets Cool and Safe! 🐾🌞

With temperatures on the rise, it is essential to take extra steps to protect your furry friends from the heat. Here are some tips to keep your pets comfortable and safe:

πŸ”ΉAlways ensure your pet has access to fresh, clean water.
πŸ”Ή If your pet spends time outdoors, ensure they have a shaded area to retreat to.
πŸ”Ή Pavement can get dangerously hot and burn paws. Walk and exercise your pet during cooler times of the day - check the temperature with the back of your hand
πŸ”Ή Never leave pets in cars for any length of time
πŸ”Ή Keep pets cool by wetting them down regularly, providing cooling mats, pet-safe fans or bringing them into the air conditioning

🚨 Watch for Signs of Heat Stroke:
🌑️ Excessive panting or drooling
🌑️ Difficulty breathing
🌑️ Lethargy or collapse
🌑️ Vomiting or diarrhea
🌑️ Bright red gums or tongue

What to Do if You Suspect Heat Stroke:
➑️ Move your pet to a cool place immediately.
➑️ Offer small amounts of cool (not ice-cold) water.
➑️ Contact a veterinarian right awayβ€”heat stroke is a medical emergency!

Stay safe and cool out there, and don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any concerns about your pet in this hot weather. πŸ•πŸˆπŸ’™

🌾 Beware of Grass Seeds! 🌾

These tiny seeds easily latch onto fur and can burrow into the skin, developing into painful abscesses.

🐾 Keep your dog out of tall grassy areas, especially in late spring and summer.

🐾 Brush your pet after walks to catch any seeds before they can cause issues.

🐾 Check paws, ears, and other vulnerable areas regularly, as seeds often get stuck between toes and around ears.

🍳 πŸ₯“ Do you like green eggs and ham? πŸ€”

The use of bandages is both a science and an art form, requiring technical skills and the ability to adapt techniques to the wide range of anatomy we see in our patients! 🐢🐱 To ensure your pet’s bandage continues to do its job, here are some essential tips:

Keep It Dry πŸ’§: Moisture can lead to infections. When going outside, wrap the bandage in a waterproof cover, like a plastic bag, but remember to remove it once back inside to allow the area to breathe.

Check for Signs of Swelling or Irritation πŸ”: Look for redness, swelling, or discharge. If the bandage seems tight or uncomfortable for your pet, reach out to us for an adjustment.

Prevent Licking and Chewing πŸ•: Pets often try to chew or lick their bandage. An e-collar or protective sock can help protect the area.

Limit Activity 🐾: Too much movement can shift the bandage or impact on healing healing. Stick to short walks and supervised playtime.

Regular Bandage Checks ⏱️: Depending on the injury, bandages may need changing every few days.

🌸 β˜€οΈ It's Baby Magpie Season! β˜€οΈ 🌸

If you see a young magpie on the ground that does not appear injured or in imminent danger, the best thing to do is leave it be. If the bird is in danger, you may move it to a safer place off the ground or in the shade.

Magpies are ground feeders, so they spend time on the ground learning essential life skills. Their parents will return regularly to feed and defend them.

Due to the territorial nature of Magpies, it is extremely difficult to release hand-reared magpies, and their chance of survival is much better when left to the care of their parents.

Many kind-hearted members of the community hand these uncoordinated learners into veterinary hospitals for care, believing them to be abandoned. Often, the parents are nearby and are simply implementing some tough love!

πŸ“ 🚨 Avian Influenza Outbreak Alert 🚨 πŸ“

Following recommendations from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, an emergency order is in place to contain and prevent the spread of this disease.

A small number of high-pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI)- infected domestic birds, including backyard poultry and aviary birds, have been detected in NSW. All birds are considered potential carriers, capable of contracting and spreading the disease.

πŸ” Clinical signs of HPAI (may be non-specific in non-poultry species):

- Sudden death
- Lethargy
- Head or limb swelling
- Bruising of the wattle, comb, feet, or skin
- Decreased appetite
- Reduction in egg production
- Neurological signs such as paralysis or seizures
- Respiratory signs such as nasal discharge and watery eyes
- Gastrointestinal signs such as diarrhoea and vomiting

πŸ” How can you protect your aviary or backyard birds:
- Minimise contact between domestic and wild birds or other animals
- Minimise non-essential visitor contact with domestic and aviary birds
- Keep new flock introduction separate for 2-3 weeks after arrival

If you suspect avian influenza in your private poultry flock or pet bird, phone your private veterinarian to assess the likelihood of infection with HPAI.
If there is a high likelihood, you will be instructed to immediately contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline at 1800 675 888.

For more information about this developing outbreak and how it may affect you and your birds, please visit DPI NSW Avian Influenza Information - https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/animals-and-livestock/poultry-and-birds/health-disease/avian-influenza
