This lovely five year old Ewe with ewe lamb at foot came into care the 8th August due to the owner being concerned about wild dog reports in the area and a fox attack the night before.

The owner asked for a small fee to release them into our care to try and recover some of their own costs.

Our founder Jacob happily scraped up the funds to get her to safety and we attached the horse float and promptly went to collect the mother and daughter duo. Both travelled safely and settled in very well.

Who says you can't put weight on an aged horse! Mary is a 31 year old Clydesdale mare in image one on the left is the 01/03/23 on the right 05/03/23 the following photos are of her remarkable recovery in progress.

Mary is a very special lady she has touched so many peoples hearts in her life starting out life bred on a TB stud to be used as a nanny mare raising many TB foals prior to her long career as a horse riding school horse teaching children and adults alike.

Mary later found herself in a long term home pampered enjoying an easy life helping two little girls grow into teens before the weather changes in recent years causing her to drop condition drastically gone unnoticed due to her being rugged during the colder months and owner unable to get down to the paddock Intrusted someone to look after her then after some issues while trying to resolve this her owner became concerned for her safety and well-being as a concerned member of public started to cause more issues of concern hacking her feathering and mane thinking they was helping due to being uneducated and unaware of the breed or of the efforts being made by her owner working with the RSPCA and local law enforcements to try and keep her safe while they tried to assist her in her recovery.

Due to the safety concerns for her general wellbeing she was entrusted to us here at Feathers & Fur Small Animal Rescue - Bird Sanctuary

On numerous occasions we thought our love and efforts may just not be enough talking about possibly making some difficult decisions at periods thinking we were not getting anywhere.

Mary has proved our efforts are worthwhile Mary is a fighter even though she's the most gentle soft soul you will ever meet she is also one of the toughest.

Mary has made a remarkable recovery over her time with us.
Mary will get to spend the rest of her golden years here with us at Feathers & Fur Small Animal Rescue.

If you would like to sponsor Mary please follow the link below and don't forget to reference Mary while you're there.

We are currently getting more and more roosters coming into care due to being dumped.

This is extremely disheartening to see!

Sadly most dumped poultry don't make it to safety due to predatory animals making a quick meal of them or if they go unnoticed by members of public sadly pass away of starvation, dehydration or exposure to the elements.

Please reframe from dumping there are many alternative avenues you can take! Try and find an appropriate home for your feathered friend first then after exhausting this avenue You could contact a local rescue group, sanctuary or shelter for assistance/direction.

Sadly most rescues are consistently at capacity but may be able to assist with finding homes for unwanted poultry by assisting with advertising while the poultry remain with the owner. If you are needing to rehome due to noise complaints you can house your boys in a dark enclosed box eg carrier or box with ventilation covered in a towel or blanket in a dark room of a night letting them out during the day.
Alternatively crow collars can be utilised if used safely. Please ensure if a crow collar is in use it is removed prior to rehoming or notify the new owner or shelter of the presence of the crow collar. Many inexperienced or unknowing new owners will not instinctively know it is there as crow collars are hidden under the collar feathers. We have had many roosters come into care sick and lethargic due to crow collars being placed on young birds then them being rehomed to new owners that have not even been made aware of the collar being in place. Crow collars becoming too small causing prevention of consumption of food, water or even strangulation as the bird grows.

Please think before you breed! Ask yourself are you able to provide a forever home for the boys if you are unable to find suitable homes ? If not maybe it is more viable to obtain s*xed point of lay pullets or s*x linked chicks to reduce the strain on yourself to find homes for unwanted poultry.

If you are looking for a new boy to join your hen house we have multiple eligible batchelors looking for their forever flocks.

Today we assisted a female Pacific black duck and her 9 ducklings to relocate to a more appropriate location as mother duck found herself stuck after making her nest in a closed in courtyard at a local nursing home. While the mother liked the idea of a gated community it was not appropriate for her ducklings and herself to be able to leave once the ducklings hatched. Mother and 9 babies successfully relocated.

Feathers and Fur would like to wish you all a very Marry Christmas please remember to monitor animals food consumption during the holiday period
Mince pies, Christmas cake and puddings at this time of year are full of dried fruits including grapes, raisins and sultanas which contain a toxin that is dangerous for a lot of our four legged friends. Ham while okay in small quantities contains alot of sodium and fat content that can cause numerous health concerns when it comes to cats and dogs, cooked bones are a no no as can splint and cause choking, blockages and perforations in the digestive system. Skin from ham and poultry is high in fat and can cause sickness and even trigger pancreatitis in our canine and feline family members. Some nuts along with chocolate and avocado also contain toxins our animals are unable to digest. Please remember to monitor children sneaking treats to their four legged brothers and sisters.

Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday period.

We appreciate your support, sending love and happiness the animals and carers at Feathers & Fur Small Animal Rescue .

Please check horse rugs, dog coats, boots and clothing before putting on.

Not only are spiders on the move but
today we found three Lychas marmoreus (marbled scorpion's 🦂🦂🦂) on a cotton horse rug although their sting is meant to be similar in comparison to a bee string it is something well worth preventing specially when rugging horses as you don't want to make rugging a bad experience or cause any pain or discomfort to horses during the process please check and relocate them to under nearby rocks or moist bark/leaf litter so they can go about their business.

Echidnas are actively on the move at this time due to it being breeding season. Echidnas are more likely to be seen crossing roads and along the roadside at this time due to actively looking for partners to reproduce. A particular characteristic displayed by echidnas during this time is the formation of trains. Please be mindful of these delicate individuals. These amazing animals are often left to die after having their delicate beak damaged after collisions with vehicles. This is due to the sensory process they utilise to locate and consume ants and termites. Please be mindful of these amazing natives during this time due to the increased movement of this amazing native.

We at Feathers & Fur Small Animal Rescue believe in new beginnings!

This lovely young couple only met each other a few weeks ago the drake came into care as a individual from the RSPCA NSW Hunter Shelter - Rutherford approximately 6 to 8 weeks ago and the female came into care from a member of Native Animal Trust Fund (NATF) NSW, Australia around three weeks ago though this lovely couple found sparks on our dam though much prefer the company of one another and have chosen to return to the house yard rather then hanging out in the flock down at the dam. Match made in heaven

Introducing Ross the Rooster!
American game c**k

Ross is looking for a scenic change swapping the inner city life of Sydney for a more relaxed lifestyle of the country Ross has travelled down to the Hunter to look for that perfect place to call home.

Ross has charisma and just enough sass to build the perfect spunky personality. Ross enjoys basking in the sun and strutting his stuff while taking in scenic views. Ross is looking for love though also likes his personal space.
If your girls are looking for Mr right Ross may make a nice addition to a small flock of ladies.

This is a bird microchip 🔬 It is very tiny indeed!

We’ve all seen the horror stories involving leg bands in birds. Did you know leg bands are not a form of identification? They are used by bird breeders to tell apart different birds in a clutch when getting them DNA s*xed and health checked 🧬 There is no formal central record for leg bands so once a bird goes to their new home 🏡 it is not necessary, and is safer to have the band removed.

We can microchip our birds the same as dogs and cats 🐾 to bring them home if they ever get lost! This is a safe procedure done under general anaesthetic and takes only a few minutes. Even birds as small as budgies can be microchipped! 🦜
