🐴 Could Stomach Ulcers Be Holding Your Horse Back? 🐴

Up to 90% of performance horses suffer from gastric ulcers, impacting their comfort, behaviour, and performance. Even subtle signs—like fussy eaters, pawing whilst eating, girthiness, reluctance to go forward, or inconsistent performance—can point to underlying stomach pain.

Gastroscopy is the only way to know for sure. This simple procedure lets us see inside your horse’s stomach, diagnose ulcers, and create a targeted treatment plan for your horse. By addressing ulcers early, we can improve your horse’s comfort, optimise digestion, and help them get back to their peak performance.

We are currently taking expressions of interest for clients wishing to have their horse scoped. Call the clinic to register your horse so they can perform at their best.

🚨 CONFIRMED PARVO CASES – PLEASE READ 🚨

We have confirmed cases of Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) in the area. Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) is a highly contagious and often fatal virus that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It attacks the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhoea (often bloody), lethargy, fever, and dehydration. In some cases, the first presenting signs you as an owner will see are inappetence and lethargy. Vomiting and diarrhoea may not present initially.

Where Does Parvo Virus Live?
Parvo is an extremely resilient virus that can survive in the environment for months to years. It spreads through infected faeces and can live in and on:
🔹 Soil, grass, and outdoor surfaces
🔹 Kennels, dog parks, and high-traffic pet areas
🔹 Shoes, clothing, and human hands
🔹 Food and water bowls
🔹 Bedding and toys

How is it Spread?
Dogs become infected from contaminated surfaces or direct contact with infected dogs or their faeces. The virus is resistant to heat, cold, and disinfectants, making it difficult to eliminate from the environment.

Signs of Parvo:
🔹 Vomiting
🔹 Bloody diarrhoea
🔹 Lethargy & weakness
🔹 Loss of appetite

How to Prevent Parvo:
✅Vaccinate – Puppies need a series of vaccines before being considered vaccinated. Adult dogs require annual boosters throughout their life to ensure they stay protected and up to date with their vaccinations.
✅Limit exposure – Keep unvaccinated dogs away from high-risk areas such as dog parks, kennels and public spaces
✅Proper hygiene – Wash hands, clean surfaces, remove faeces.
✅ Quarantine infected dogs – Prevent spreading to other animals.

Act fast – If your dog shows any symptoms, contact Chinchilla Vet Services immediately!

🌞 Hot Weather Pet Safety Tips 🐾

As temperatures rise, it’s important to keep your furry friends cool and safe! Here are a few tips to help your pets beat the heat:

💧 Hydration is key: Always provide fresh, clean water for your pets, and make sure they have access to shade.

🚶‍♂️ Walk wisely: Stick to early morning or late evening walks to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Test the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for their paws!

🚗 No cars, no exceptions: Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes. Temperatures can rise to dangerous levels in no time.

🍦 Cool treats: Offer pet-friendly frozen treats or toys to keep them entertained and comfortable.

🌡️ Know the signs of heatstroke: Look out for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or difficulty breathing. If you suspect heatstroke, seek veterinary care immediately!

Let’s keep our pets happy and healthy all summer long! If you have concerns, give us a call at Chinchilla Vet Services—we’re here to help.
