Just a reminder, the tick season is not over!
We strongly urge all dog and cat owners to keep up to date with tick prevention all year round. Although not typically ‘tick season’ we are still experiencing an influx of tick paralysis cases in our patients. We tend to have ticks all year round in our area, especially with the warm humid weather, so please continue with tick prevention. We have many different prevention options available from as little as $20 per month.
Please call us for advice on what product would be best for your pet.

PLEASE PUT TICK PREVENTION ON YOUR DOGS AND CATS!
We have seen so many tick paralysis cases in the last couple of weeks, they are filling our cages. We currently have 6 patients in hospital suffering with tick paralysis. There is no guarantee we can save your pet if they get tick paralysis. The cost to treat is much greater than the cost of prevention. The cost of prevention can be as little as $20 a month. There are many options available. This season seems to be even worse than previous years, and this, much needed rain is only going to bring out more ticks. Brachycephalic breeds such as pugs, bulldogs, French bulldogs are 50% more likely to pass away due to airway complications. They must be on tick prevention 100% of the time. Ticks can be carried in by wildlife and blown in with the wind. Even if you have never had a tick problem in the past, there is a high chance you will now. We can not urge you enough to choose prevention rather than treatment. We don’t want to see your pet suffer. Please call us with any questions.
Thank you.

There is currently a parvo virus outbreak in the Raymond Terrace and Maitland areas. Our local pound has now been closed due to a number of parvo cases in the shelter. Parvo is affecting both adult dogs and puppies, and can live in the environment for extended periods of time (many years) It is important that people understand that even if their dog doesn’t leave their property, ALL people coming and going from the property can carry it home on their shoes. Parvo is a horrible disease, causing hemorrhagic gastro enteritis and even with often lengthy and expensive treatment, it can quite commonly be fatal. We strongly recommend that anyone with a dog that has not had a vaccination in the last 12 months, organise to have one ASAP. It is also important that puppies have 3 vaccinations by the age of 16-18 weeks. Please feel free to call us for further information regarding the virus or vaccination.

We would to thank all of our clients who are going out of their way to travel to us despite the bridge closure. For a lot of you, you are going out of your way to travel via detours and we appreciate you supporting our business. We, along with many other business owners in Clarence Town, are feeling a significant downturn in business due to the bridge closure.
We hope that it won’t be for much longer. In the mean time, please give us a call if you are uncomfortable driving on the detour roads. We are happy to chat about possible solutions such as organising meeting points for consultations and medication drop offs etc. Please give us a call to organise an alternative if you’re unable to access us while the bridge is closed.
Thanks again, from the team at Williams River Vet Clinic

Myxomatosis warning.
We have seen a quite a few cases of myxomatosis in rabbits in the past couple of weeks. If you own rabbits, please be aware there is no vaccination or prevention and unfortunately there is no cure, so infected rabbits need to be put to sleep.
Myxomatosis is spread by mosquitoes.
You can protect your rabbits by keeping them indoors away from mosquitoes or covering their enclosure with mosquitoe proof mesh.
Please call us if you have any questions.

MSD are offering $10 off ALL Bravecto tick prevention products between now and Christmas. With the severity of tick paralysis cases we are seeing and the nation wide shortage of tick serum to treat paralysed animals we are urging ALL dog and cat owners to stay up to date with tick prevention. We have almost run out of tick serum and are unable to get any more until the end of January, meaning sadly we will not be able to treat affected dogs and cats, and unfortunately animals will die 😢
Ticks are easily preventable so please please ensure your pet is up to date with prevention.
