Let's talk Clicking or popping of joints!
It can affect horses of any age and can often be of great concern to owners. However, it’s usually normal and most of the time nothing to be too worried about.
The exact reason joints pop or crack is not entirely understood. It can be:
➡️ The mobility of the joint
➡️By bony parts of a joint rubbing against each other
➡️A tendon stretching and releasing over the joint
➡️A ligament getting tight rapidly when the joint is moving and clicking back into place
➡️One more theory is that nitrogen bubbles in the joint fluid are rapidly brought into or out of solution when the joint is manipulated
A few theories as to why clicking joints can occur includes:
➡️ Related to immaturity
➡️ Lack of conditioning
➡️ Size or arthritic changes in older or high-performance horses
Most of the time these sounds are quite benign, and vets will often recommend that if there’s no cartilage damage, pain, swelling, lameness, lack of function or inflammation, then you should give your horse lots of turnout, conditioning and steady regular work. Any lameness should of course be checked out, but the noises themselves almost never correlate with injury. Most horses grow out of it, but many continue to click their entire lives.
However, if you’re worried there could be an escalation of a problem related to a clicking joint then a good joint supplement can help manage and alleviate this condition. Ingredients such as MSM, hyaluronic acid, glucosamine and even rosehip (a powerful antioxidant) can all help, especially if these ingredients are combined, and in forms that are easily absorbed.
Fibregenix Liquid Joint and bone RLF combines all these ingredients in one fast absorbing liquid product and additionally contains a powerful bone supplement of vitamin D3 and calcium chelate to ensure bones are kept well-mineralised and strong. It’s the easiest way to keep those annoying clicks at bay and is a great insurance for all horses from foals to full grown.
