Understanding Severely Matted Coats in Pets🐶🚨

Professional groomers encounter severely matted pets more frequently than we’d like. These cases can be heartbreaking because we empathize with the pain and health issues that often accompany them. Here are some key points to consider about matted coats:

• Shaving is Necessary: Severely matted coats cannot be simply brushed out. While minor tangles can sometimes be untangled, severe matting requires shaving. Leaving the coat fluffy isn’t an option because clipper blades must pass under the mats, not through them. As a result, a very short shave is often necessary.

• Body Temperature Regulation: When a coat is severely matted (sometimes called “pelted”), it impairs the pet’s ability to regulate body temperature. Dogs rely on thermoregulation to stay cool or warm depending on the weather. Matted fur makes this process much harder, affecting their overall well-being.

• Skin Disease Risk: Matted coats almost always come with skin issues. Matting traps excess moisture, bacteria, and fungi close to the skin. As the natural microbiome is disrupted, the skin becomes vulnerable to infections.

• Pain and Discomfort: Matted coats are painful for pets. The added weight pulls on the skin, causing discomfort. When matting occurs around legs, ears, or the tail, it restricts movement and exacerbates the pain. We refer to this situation as “neglectful abuse,” as severe matting doesn’t happen overnight.
