This training video cracks me up. I was working on Saffi's drop stay and making big crazy distracting movements to test if she could stay on her mat.

As I'm hopping around the yard, I look up at the neighbour's roof and there's a workman cleaning out the gutters. He must have thought I was a total weirdo! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Well, he would be right. Crazy dog lady here, watch me wiggle!

When we're out on a walk, it's great to look at things from your dog's perspective.

Dogs are scavengers, it's their life mission and the moment we start our walk with them, they are keen to explore, forage and learn.

Preventing them from doing exploring on lead increases physical and mental stress, keeps them from building good social skills and creates confusion and tension within the human-dog relationship.

P.S. I filmed this video at the start of the year hence the 'Happy New Year!'.

I talk a lot about enrichment and this is why:

When we have anxious or reactive animals, there's a lot of negative perspective happening for them. They're looking through the lens of stress and fear.

Enrichment taps into that basic mental need they have and while they're engaged in an enrichment activity, they're not so focused on doing the problem behaviour. This works for both cats and dogs.

One easy idea for an enrichment is the licky mat. You can smear peanut butter, yoghurt, cream cheese, cat paste or some other spreadable food, pop it on the floor and let 'em at it.

Licky mats can be a great distraction from triggers (work man in the house, loud noises over the fence) and also can be a great one for decompression after a stressful event.

Hey everyone!

I'm back from an extended break from social media and this year is shaping up to be a super wonderful one for me and the gang.

My tiny house is nearly completion, I've set some fun goals to do with my animals and I've started fostering this little pony.

Meet Phoenix. He's from the same rescue case as Echo only he's only two and is keen as mustard to learn and of course, check out my treat bag!

How's the year looking for you?

For myself, I'm aiming to:
- Train Echo for riding
- Work more on Saffi's anxiety
- Try teaching Cypah, the bush cat, some tricks
- And keep enriching Astra's life as she becomes more mature.

I'd love to hear what you've got planned. Do you have an animal goal or problem behaviour you want to nail this year?

Emotion exists behind every behaviour that our animals make. If we want to change behaviour and ensure that the change stays around, we have to help our animals change the emotion too.

The story with cats often is they have a mind of their own and can't be changed or trained. While training a cat is different to a dog and does need more attention, we can change behaviour with holistic therapy, curiosity and by shifting our own energy.

Cats like all other animals feel emotion and make decisions based on how they feel. Whether it's emotional tension or physical discomfort we can hone in on what's out of balance and help them feel better in their own skin, environment and relationships.

When this happens, the reactive nature of cats can change, the negative bias they have can shift and you can see a kitty transformation and ease that wasn't previously there.

What's a cat issue you're having right now?

๐Ÿพ The Handling Game

Handling doesn't have to be a head war with your dog. By playing the handling game you can build up to your dog co-operating when things like ears and paws need attention.

Astra and Saffi currently have skin and ear infections that need weekly care and Saffi being a cavoodle, haircuts are always on the agenda!

If you have a particular issue (trimming, ears, teeth, sensitive body part) your dog has trouble with, give me DM buzz and I'll send you the starting steps to teaching this fun game to your dog!

Nap time is important for our dogs and cats. It's a time for them to calm their nervous system, process previous stressful or high energy activities. They don't need to be entertained all day. Sprinkle their day with little fun activities, interactions and exploration and then give them space to chill out.

If you have a companion animal who's mode is Go-Go! all day this may be an indication that they aren't able to switch off and their brain is over simulated.

One way to encourage down time is to demonstrate it yourself and reward your dog or cat for resting beside you with their favourite treat. The more you positively reinforce calmness the more calmness they will practice and start to offer.

โ€˜Cop copโ€™ is a trick I taught Astra years ago. Itโ€™s a fun behaviour that requires the dog to balance on your feet as you walk.

Of course, it never looks this fancy in the beginning. To start with all Iโ€™m doing with Saffi is encouraging her to touch my foot with her paw as I lure her forward with a treat. Baby steps!!

What does harmony look like for you?

I have a multi-animal household so my idea of harmony is having animals who are able to communicate their needs safely, respect each other and as much as possible feel safe and confident about their place in the world.

I've also shaped a routine that is easeful for me to consistently repeat without burnout. Harmony is having my needs met as well as theirs.

Have a persistent dog or cat behaviour problem you want fixed so you can have a happier, calmer animal?

So often animal problem behaviour is driven by a combination of physical imbalance, emotional tension and mental blocks shaping the way your animal perceives and interacts with the world. If that driver behind their behaviour isn't harmonious, we can assist and support them to show up in the world with more ease and confidence.

Online animal sessions with me are a combination of training and holistic bodywork tailoring a whole body approach that gives you easy solutions, release tension and emotional stress from your animal's body and deepens the beautiful trust and connection between you both.

My 5 Week Package is a $370 AUD investment.

DM me to book this package. I look forward to helping you on your animal journey!
