🌽Our maize crops are 7-8 weeks old!

This particular crop shown below is HSR Maximus under irrigation near Winchelsea. It is 8 weeks old this week, with tassels developing.

What is a tassel on a maize plant?
The tassel (male flower) is what produces the pollen that fertilizes the silks on the corn "ear" (female flower) in order to develop the individual corn kernels on a cob. Did you know the tassel can produce more than 1,000,000 pollen grains?
Pollen shed occurs for approximately a week, and the average life span of a pollen grain is only 20 minutes after it is shed from the tassel!

Pest Spotlight!🐛🌽

Helicoverpa "Heliothis" is a native moth that migrates into crops and lays eggs. The larvae that hatch from these eggs cause significant damage to host plants such as sorghum, pulses and maize crops.

Larvae vary in color and size, often identified by the pale stripe along either side. While they can cause damage throughout the entire growth cycle of a plant, they are particularly damaging to maize crops when they are tasseling and silking. Damage to silks reduces pollination and grain set, significantly reducing yields.

Chemical controls are most effectively targeted at smaller caterpillars, with control options available to preserve the beneficial insects within crops to help fight the harmful ones!

Keep an eye out in your maize crops for these critters, as we're now seeing them in South-east and South-West areas!

Armyworm is on the move in pasture crops around the South-West!

Keep an eye out in your pastures for populations of armyworm. These pests can be found chewing on plant leaves or through stems at the base of seedheads.

So how do you control them when the population is causing significant damage?

The soil temperature this morning is a cooler 16 degrees. Factors leading to this drop are some light rain that has made the ground damp, as well as some cooler temperatures over the last few days.

Our paddock has been cut for hay meaning it’s a lot easier to get to the middle of for taking the temperature of the soil!
