I believe this is true - copied from another page.
A major root cause of fear while riding is having the WRONG HORSE (at this time in your riding career).

There, once more I said it out loud.

Some horses are calm and quiet just about always, some horses are always frantic with worry, or highly explosive, or have pain issues, or other problems.

And there are dozens of gradations between the extremes, and if a rider who is comfortable at one end of the spectrum is mis-matched with a horse at the opposite end of the spectrum, that rider is likely to be either somewhat bored or scared or actually terrified.

Try to ride the horses that are best for you where you are right now for your best chances of a positive ride.

(This advice is often given and almost equally often ignored or rejected.)
