𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗔 𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛 𝗢𝗙 𝗔 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗬!
This time last year St George cowboy Brett Pechey had only been in a cutting saddle for 18 months. At that time, relatively new to cutting he got a bit of help from Springsure based Jason and Rachel Leitch but he's largely taught himself via You Tube videos and pottering around at home.

He won the Futurity Final at Toowoomba but at the 2022 NCHA 4CYTE Futurity he had what was then his biggest win on the big dance floor at the NCHA 4CYTE Futurity on board 'Makers Memory' (Haymaker X Periwinkle bred by Ken Cullen) when he won the Amateur Non-Pro Futurity and with a great 218pt run.

But three days later this likeable character showed us that he and ‘Makers Memory’ had a bit more in the tank when they crossed the Ariat Australia timeline in the Yulgilbar Quarter Horse Stud Non-Pro Futurity Final.
But before we go there, let's just put this all in context.

Up Brett’s way there’s not a lot of cattle, so he’s found a different way to train his horses.
He works goats. Yes, goats!
Brett does a lot of contract goat mustering and he'll act as a stock carrier and reseller of goats for farmers who have mustered off their properties and want to get the goats to market.
So he's always got plenty of goats at home and so he decided to use them to train his horses on to save the limited number of cattle he has to work with.
Especially his young horses.

He explained
''You can work your horse in the vicinity of a goat the goat will just stand still. If you press the goat and move it along it will suddenly stop and that helps to teach your horse to stop''.
He added, ''I can get the horse working the way I want with the goats then put them on cattle that are fresh so I'm saving my cattle too!'

And clearly the system works!

Showing his own 'Makers Memory' in the final of the Yulgilbar Quarter Horse Stud Non-Pro Futurity last year Brett was fourth out in a 15 horse final and the lead was at 216pts. He went about his work, driving a beast up in the pen and then just making sure he kept up with it and kept it up.

When the buzzer went he had earned another 218 pt run (his new lucky number!) and then he just had to wait.
By the time second last out and highest aggregate qualifier Sinead Elliott and 'Flaming Cat' crossed the Ariat Australia Timeline, Brett was back at the truck.
He couldn't watch!

His wife Joy called him and told him Sinead's marked 216.50pts, (a score that would ultimately see her and 'Flaming Cat' finish as Reserve Champions) and Brett said he would come back over but, there was still one to run.
He didn't want to come into the arena until the timer had stopped so he sat underneath the big screen and watched from there and the waited for the final score to be announced !

And then it was real.
He and ‘Makers Memory’ were the 2022 Yulgilbar Quarter Horse Stud Non-Pro Futurity Champions!

Well, the ‘goat catcher’ is back and he is looking to back up last year’s win in this year's Linfox Property Group Non-Pro Futurity with his new futurity horse, a stunning young c**t who has also ‘been on the goats’.

His name is ‘Roma Rey Von’ (Rey Von Stevie X Pechey’s Stud Sensation) but the mare is better known as ‘Roma’ when she was shown by Peter O’Neill as a campdraft horse.
And as a campdraft horse she was a champion!.
She won the ‘Chinchilla Grand Father’s Clock’ draft in 2011 and then three years later won the Warwick Gold Cup! She’s a legend in the campdraft world.

So we’re thinking, and Brett is hoping, he has a very cowy horse under his saddle.

He and Joy will be busy showing at this years NCHA 4CYTE Futurity.
Joy will show her mare ‘Lil Catalyst’ (Cattalou X ‘Smooth Request’) also in the Non-Pro Futurity and Brett will bring back his Non-Pro Futurity champion ‘Makers Memory’ to show in the CINCH Australia Non-Pro Derby and in the Australian Quarter Horse Association Open Derby and ‘Maker’s Holly’ (Hay Maker X Boree Holly Periwinkle) will also ride in these classes.

But if you’re going to travel this far south, fill up the truck!
We’ll also see Brett show in the Beechfork Ranch Non-Pro Classic on board ‘Maker’s Holly’ (Hay Maker X Boree Holly Periwinkle)

Mate. All the best.
We know you’ll ride hard, play hard and have lot's of fun.
Let’s hope 2023 is an even bigger year for Team Pechey!

And we extend a big welcome and a huge thank you to the Linfox Property Group for sponsoring the Non-Pro Futurity and joining us this year as a new sponsor of our NCHA 4CYTE Futurity event. We're excited to have you guys on board.
