Horses without a continuous supply of water are more than twice as likely to develop colic - limited access to water increases risk of colic 3-fold, and a change in water source by 5-fold. If a horse becomes dehydrated it moves fluid out of the gut and into the body tissues. This reduces the water content of the intestines and can lead to impactions. If roughage is changed from haylage to hay, water intake decreases. Paddocked horses require daily around 5 litres of water/100 kg BW and stabled horses, 3 times this. Automatic waterers need a flow of 8 litres/minute to meet the horseโ€™s needs. Restricting water can result in reduced appetite and metabolic disturbances such as colic. Reduced salt intake (less than 25 grams โ€“ one tablespoon a day) is linked to higher risk of colic โ€“ especially impactions. It is recommended that horses also have access to a salt lick and those with a mineral/salt block have a 70% reduction in risk of epiploic foramen entrapment โ€“ a disease of the small intestine.

Really dirty sheaths can cause secondary infection, dermatitis, and inflammation. While these conditions are generally not life threatening, it's a good idea to practice proactive prevention.

One of the most important reasons we advocate for annual sheath cleaning is to inspect the p***s and sheath to look for cancerous lesions. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is the second most common equine tumor, and the p***s and sheath are common areas for this type of cancer to be found.

I have been asked what I use to clean a sheath so
To clean a sheath I usually use coconut oil. It removes dirt, dissolves oil from the pores, is anti bacterial and anti fungal and a lot kinder on their bits ๐Ÿ˜ŠAlways remember if you do not understand how or what you are doing it may be an uncomfortable experience for your horse and he is less likely to drop his W***y for you

How often should a sheath be cleaned

every 6-12 months
Most horses should have a thorough sheath cleaning every 6-12 months. A thorough cleaning will also allow you to examine the sheath and p***s for any signs of neoplasia such as sarcoids, melanomas, and squamous cell carcinoma, habronemiasis or infections.

Did You Know ??

A sheath "bean" is a hard, clay-like accumulation of sm**ma in the urethral fossa at the tip of the p***s in geldings and stallions. Beans usually do not cause problems, but in some cases, they grow very large and cause difficulty urinating and sheath swelling. If your horse's sheath is exceptionally dirty, periodically the sm**ma can mix with more dirt, sweat and mineral salts from the urine and form โ€œbeansโ€. A bean looks and feels like a piece of hard gray bubble gum.
