🐍 Snake Bites in Cats: What Every Pet Owner Needs to Know 🐾

Just this week, we cared for a handsome boy named Jinx, who was admitted to the hospital 3 days ago after a suspected snake bite. Jinx received antivenom and has spent the last few days on fluids to allow his body to recover. Thanks to quick action from his owners and the right care, Jinx is now on the mend and getting stronger every day. 🐱💚

We've seen a rise in snake bite cases in cats over the past couple of weeks. Did you know that cats are highly susceptible to snake bites in Australia, especially during the warmer months? Curious kitties exploring the outdoors are at risk of encountering snakes, and while they may take longer to show symptoms compared to dogs, the situation can still be life-threatening.

Symptoms in cats can take longer to appear than in dogs, sometimes delaying up to 25 hours after the encounter before any signs are noticeable.

Signs Your Cat May Have Been Bitten:
⚠️ Sudden weakness or collapse
⚠️ Difficulty breathing or rapid panting
⚠️ Dilated pupils or changes in vision
⚠️ Vomiting or drooling
⚠️ Trembling or muscle twitching

Cats often show delayed symptoms because their bodies metabolize venom differently, but this delay can be deceptive—don’t wait to seek help if you suspect a bite.

What to Do:
🐾 Stay calm and keep your cat as still as possible to slow venom spread.
🐾 Seek immediate veterinary care—snake bites require urgent treatment, including antivenom and supportive care.
🐾 Avoid applying ice or attempting to suck out the venom.

Prevention Tips:
🐍 Keep your yard tidy to reduce snake hiding spots (e.g., long grass, wood piles).
🐍 Monitor outdoor cats closely during snake season.
🐍 If possible, keep your cat indoors or limit outdoor time to secure areas.

We’ve seen firsthand how quick action saves lives, just like it did for Jinx. If you’re concerned or want advice on keeping your cat safe this summer, don’t hesitate to reach out.

⚠Tick Paralysis⚠
We've seen an increase in paralysis tick patients this season.

‼️ Please remember if you are leaving the area to use prevention BEFORE you leave!
If you are unsure what your pet needs or what treatment is best, please pop in or call one of our clinics. We will happily recommend the best products for your furry friend.

🔍It would be best if you also were doing daily body searches on your pet.
To perform a tick search, work your fingers through your dog or cat’s coat down to the skin and then massage your fingers over the entire coat. You should concentrate on the dog or cat’s front half as this is where ticks are more likely to attach. Make sure you check the edge of the lips, in skin folds, between the toes, and in the ears.

👀 If you find a paralysis tick on your pet you should use a tick remover to detach it from the skin. If a tick remover is not available. Attempt to remove the tick by its head, without squeezing the body.

Closely monitor your pet, even if it is well. Your pet can start showing signs of tick paralysis after removing the tick.
If you cannot safely remove the tick please call your local vet.

✅Tick Tips:
- Use prevention before going away.
- Regularly check your pet from head to toe for ticks.

⚠Signs to look for ⚠
- Wobbliness
- Lethargy
- Vomiting
- Salivation
- Difficulty Breathing

If you notice any of these signs please call your vet immediately.

🎄 Holiday Foods That Are Harmful to Pets 🎄

Christmas is a time for delicious treats, but some festive foods can be dangerous for your furry friends. Keep your pets safe by avoiding these common holiday hazards:

🍫 Chocolate – Toxic to dogs and cats, even in small amounts.
🍇 Grapes and Raisins – Found in puddings and mince pies, these can cause kidney failure.
🍖 Ham and Fatty Meats – High in fat and salt, ham can cause upset stomachs or even pancreatitis in pets.
🦴 Cooked Bones – Can splinter and cause blockages or injuries.
🧅 Onions, Garlic, and Chives – Found in stuffing and gravy, these are harmful to pets.
🌰 Macadamia Nuts – Toxic to dogs, causing weakness and vomiting.
🍬 Sugar-Free Treats – Xylitol (in some candies and gum) is highly toxic to pets.

🐾 Safe Alternatives: Treat your pets to their own healthy, pet-safe snacks or some fresh veggies like carrots or green beans.

If your pet eats something they shouldn’t, contact us or your nearest emergency vet right away. You can call us on call us on 6455 7800.
Let’s make sure everyone in the family has a safe and joyful Christmas! 🎅🐶🐱

🌞 Holiday Plans with Your Pet? Protect Them Before You Go! 🐾

If you’re heading out of the Snowy Mountains region with your furry friend, it’s essential to ensure they’re protected from ticks and heartworm. While our area is free from these threats, popular travel spots like the south coast and even Canberra have reported cases of paralysis ticks or heartworm.

Just like you pack sunscreen for yourself, you need to pack protection for your pet!

Before You Go:
1️⃣ Ensure your pet’s worming is up to date.
2️⃣ Check when your pet last received heartworm prevention. If they’ve never had it, speak to your vet about the best course of action. An annual heartworm injection is a great option for peace of mind.
3️⃣ Administer tick prevention before your trip. If your pet is already on tick prevention, check the product and dates to confirm they’re still protected.

We Recommend:
Nexgard: A tasty, monthly chew that protects against paralysis ticks and fleas.
SR-12: A yearly injection administered by your vet for heartworm protection.
Milbemax: A reliable, easy-to-give tablet for broad-spectrum worming.

🎒 Ask About Our Coast Pack!
We’ve got you covered with our Coast Pack, including everything your pet needs for a quick trip away—plus reminders to ensure you never miss a dose.

Give us a call or drop by the clinic to put together the perfect prevention pack for your pet. Enjoy your holiday knowing your furry family member is safe and protected! 🐶🐱
