~ New (additional) egg supplier ~

Hunter Valley Eggs will remain our lead supplier but, especially in winter, they’re unable to fill all our orders on their own.

So we’ve found another egg supplier to help keep up with demand - Moonbi Valley Eggs, based near Tamworth.

Their stocking density is 10.000 hens per HA, similar to Pace Eggs.

Supply from Moonbi Valley Eggs will start this week.

~ Mayver’s Nut Spreads: 100% nuts ~

*More new products!*

We've had Mayver's peanut butter and other nut spreads before, but H2G struggled with the Best Before dates when supplying them.
So we replaced them with Ridiculously Delicious Peanut Butter and Dark Choc Original Crunch spread. True to its brand name it’s ridiculously delicious, but also a little expensive at over $7 a jar.

We felt we needed a slightly more economical – but almost as tasty and honest-to-goodness-100%-nuts-only - peanut butter. And still 100% Aussie nuts.

In addition to the Mayver's Crunchy and Smooth peanut butter, we also offer:
*Mayvers Pure Goodness Everything Spread – 8 different nuts and seeds
*Mayvers Almond Butter
*Mayvers Tahini Hulled.

And until the end of this month, they’re all 10% off their already low price.

Find them under Pantry - Honey, jam, and spreads

H2G Passata Rustica: $2 a jar until stocks last.

Honest to Goodness came to our new warehouse last month, and realised that 3500 sqm is a LOT of space. So, when they ended up with a few pallets of Passata with a Best Before Date of 31 August, who were they going to call??

“We’ll take ‘m”, we said. Over 1500 jars that we normally sell for $4.49 – but are now going out the door for $2 a pop.

We think they’ll be gone in a fortnight – well before they have a chance to expire. BTW: there’s every chance they’ll be good for another year…

Wow! this are a fantastic add to our pantry this week. GREAT ,to add to soup this winter and any hamper 😋

Lolli’s Artisan Soup Mixes: a meal on its own

Produced by Colleen Walters on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, these mixes will take your soup to a while new level. Or at least, they’ll save you time (and money) having to get each ingredient on its own. (Each variant has between 20 and 40 different ingredients – and all of them (except for maltodextrin) are whole foods and spices.

The packs look colourful – almost too good to open – but trust us: they’re worth it. Each one will deliver 10-12 serves (easily 2-2.5L) of thick and richly flavoured soup.

Available flavours:
Thai Curry
Italian Garden
Tex Mex Chilli
Split Pea
Mulligatawny
The Box Divvy price is $10 each ($13.95 elsewhere), which works out to less than $1 per serve. Please note: some flavours will need additional ingredients (e.g. bacon for the Split Pea Soup).
You’ll find them in Pantry ➡️ Meal Preparation ➡️ Soup, Stock & Gravy.

Check out the amazing goodness this week😋

Mandarins

We’re jumping onto early season Honey Murcott mandarins this week, because they’re very low in seeds this time of year. Wait another month, and you’ll be doing spitting competitions. Oh, and just $2.60 a kilo.

Pineapples

There is still a heavy overhang of pineapples in the market – but now it’s mainly topless ones. They’re $2.78 each. Just don’t put them on the pizza…

Lettuce

Local Iceberg lettuces are just $2.27 each. They’re from Xerri Bros in Agnes Banks, and if you think it’s too cold for a salad, why not make San Choy Bow? Recipe here

Leeks

If you have some of the ridiculously cheap Sebagos left from last week, get yourself from leeks for $2.20 a pop – also from Manuel Xerri – and make leek and potato soup to keep you warm.

Tomatoes

The Queensland tomato season has exploded, in a good way: field tomatoes are $3.58 a kilo. Use them in some bruschetta or guacamole.

Box Divvy’s version of The Soup Pack

The eastern seaboard continues to suffer from a cold snap, so: bring out the soup. And to help you get started, we’re putting together a Soup Pack.

There are plenty of Soup Packs around, but none of them are particularly generous. Take the Coles version: 1 potato, 1 onion, 1 carrot, 1 parsnip, 1 turnip and 1 celery stick – barely 1 kilo of hard vegetables to make stock, priced at $4.90.

The Box Divvy version weighs at least 1.5kg, and costs $4.76. Weight for weight, that’s 35% cheaper than the Coles version

Zucchini🥒

Also from Queensland: zucchini is down to $4 a kilo. It’s a green light from us.

Tomatoes🍅

Red Field tomatoes from Bowen in north Queensland are down to $3.94 a kilo. They’re still $9 a kilo in the supermarkets. Price gouging? We caught them red-handed

Brussel sprouts

Back to green: Brussels Sprouts are down to $4.52 a kilo, the lowest price this season. The supermarkets are seeing green with envy: they’re more than double the Box Divvy price

Apples🍎

Moving over to red…or is it pink? Pink Lady apples from Jackson at Prima Fresh in Tatura: full colour, yet down to $3.50 a kilo. Thanks Jackson!

Kiwi🥝

Let’s start with green: kiwi. The Aussie supply has finished, so it’s New Zealand all the way till September. And they’re down to 83c each. I’m giving it the green thumbs up

🍍Happy Pineapple Day Week Month🍍

Last week, we announced International Pineapple Week, and celebrated🍍 pineapples-with-tops for $2.76 a pop.
🍍This week, the grower is desperate to sell a big overhang of freshly picked pineapples – bringing them down to $2.34 each. So go on, help him out!🍍

Kabul Star Bakery’s famous Afghani wood-fired flatbread

Kabul Star bakersFlour, salt, yeast, water: 4 simple ingredients will transport you to a whole new world.

Also known as snowshoe bread (on account of their shape) these flatbreads are baked in a wood-fired stone oven - hence the slight charring.

Baked by Asad and his family, they fled the Taliban in 2010 and set up shop in Auburn. His father and grand-father before him were bakers, and he is continuing the 40-year family tradition.

FlatbreadSome have described this bread as a hybrid between Turkish bread and Indian naan, but this description does not do it justice. It's soft, somewhat fluffy, definitely rustic, moor-ish, incredibly versatile, and despite the simple ingredients, they seem to stay fresh for 3-4 days. You can crisp them up in the oven, heat them in the microwave for a softer result, or even toast them.

You can cover them with cheese and toast them under a hot grill. Eat them with falafel or lamb kofta, some hummos and tabouleh; turn them into a hamburger with Handler’s meat patties. Or eat them with your favourite curry (as in: Belicious Afghani Lamb curry). The Afghanis themselves use them to mop up any leftover sauce and rice from their plate, like a pre-rinse.

Above all, they are so delicious, you can't stop eating them. Ingredients: wheat flour, wholemeal flour, salt, yeast, water. You’ll find them under Bakery ➡️ Bread ➡️ Wraps & Flatbread. Two loaves per pack for a combined weight of around 760g. Baked and delivered fresh daily.

Warehouse manager, Mohammad, at his citizenship ceremonyOh, and you can thank our warehouse manager Mohammed for introducing us to Kabul Star Bakery

Apples

Most apples – including Pink Lady – are good value now, but our Divvy Pick is still the Granny Smith at $3.26 a kilo. From Prima Fresh and Shaholli.

Cara Cara oranges

Can we sell more Cara Cara oranges if we take the price down to $2 a kilo, asks the grower? That’s the $64000 question. Our answer? Let’s find out…

Green Capsicum

Now this is good news: large numbers of green capsicum – also coming out of Queensland – are bringing prices down below the $4 a kilo mark. Now, if you leave green capsicum on the vine, they will turn red within a few weeks. So there’s our prediction…

Iceberg lettuce

Iceberg from Manuel Xerri in Agnes Banks: at $2.55 a head, you can’t go wrong.

Potatoes

Not often available, but Kestrel potatoes – also known as King Edward – are one of our favourite spuds. They’re versatile – mash, boil, fry – but we reckon they’re best roasted. Crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. Perfect winter fare.

Tomatoes

And lastly, Kim and Laks are supplying our grape tomatoes this week: $2.95 a punnet

Beerenberg
Mustard Potatoes 🥔

Place the potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with cold water.
Bring to the boil and cook till just tender when tested with a skewer, approximately 8 – 10 minutes. Drain.

In a large fry pan, heat the oil, add smokey honey mustard, cumin seeds and turmeric. Stir to fry for 1 minute then add the drained potatoes, tossing through the mustard and spice mix.

Season with salt and pepper. Allow to brown and crisp a little.
In a small pan, heat the extra vegetable oil, when hot carefully add curry leaves, fry for a few seconds to crisp the leaf. Stand back as the leaves will spit while frying. Remove from the oil and drain on absorbent paper.

Tomatoes

North Queensland Field Tomatoes are showing signs of life: supply up, prices down to $5.67 a kilo

Cauliflower

Another steady player: cauliflower. This week’s supply comes from Manuel Xerri in Agnes Banks: $3.40 each, and good size.

Pineapples

Pineapples on the other hand are topsy turvy: cheap one week, scarce the next. So were taking it week by week, but right now good-sized fruit is $2.90 each

Celery

Also from Manuel: celery. Go on, make some soup, or a casserole – chances are you will need a celery, and at $1.70 a bunch, why not?

Passionfruit

The passionfruit season is going from good to great, and we’re switching to the purple variety: 75c each, and packed with pulp

Pears

The pear season has gone a bit off lately. Dare we say: pear-shaped? But oddly, Nashis are still going strong at less than a dollar a pop

Nashi pears: Bibs needed

Speaking of pears, these Nashi pears from Shepparton – fresh, not canned – are so juicy, you will need a bib to catch all the juice…Just a dollar a piece

ORANGES
The other JUICE FACTORY is the Cara Cara orange: it belongs to the Navel family, but it’s sweeter and more intense. Just $2.25 a kilo at Box Divvy

GREEN BEANS

This time last year, green beans were $12 a kilo – but this week, they’ll cost you less than $4. Now you’re cooking-with-gas!

BROCCOLI
In a race to the bottom with the green beans, broccoli also dropped under the $4 a kilo level.

Brussel Sprouts
Not far behind are the Brussels Sprouts: $5 a kilo. Only at Box Divvy

05/06/2024

Bosc pears are characterised by their hard flesh and brown skin. Early in their ripeness cycle, they tend to be juicy, crunchy, and sweet. When fully ripe, the fruit becomes sweeter and softer, and the skin becomes wrinkly.

Most pears are a good source of fibre. A medium-sized pear can provide six grams of fibre. Pears are also a source of vitamin C and provide only 420 kilojoules (100 kilocalories) of food energy per serving. Moreover, pears are sodium free, fat-free, and cholesterol free.

Since Bosc pears have a firm and solid flesh, they can be used in a variety of ways, such as baking, broiling, and poaching. They can maintain their form throughout the process, making them a resilient fruit to use.

Italian Pear & Chocolate Breakfast Cake

Serves 6-8

100ml flavourless oil
150g caster sugar
2 eggs at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
250g flour (place four tablespoons of cornflour in a bowl and add plain flour to reach a 250g weight)
2 teaspoons baking powder
75ml milk
5 beurre bosc pears, peeled, halved, and cored, two of them chopped up into small pieces, the other three intact but cored - tip: use a melon baller to remove the core of the pear
125g chocolate chips

Step 1 - Preheat oven to 180C. Grease and line the base and sides of a 23cm springform tin. Using an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, whisk the oil, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until double or triple in volume. Sift in half of the flour and baking powder and add half the milk and fold. Sift in the remaining flour and milk and then the pears and chocolate chips. Scoop into the prepared tin.

Step 2 - With a knife, score the pears using a sharp knife, making sure not to cut all the way through. Place these on top of the cake and gently submerge them a little. Bake for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted comes out clean (about 1 hour and 20 minutes). Serve with icing sugar and cream.

Mandarins
We managed to secure a good supply of Daisy mandarins this week: they taste terrific, peel ok and are low on seeds. We think you’ll like them, especially at $2.34 a kilo.

Royal Gala Apples
This week’s Royal Gala apples come from Bite Riot orchards in Orange. And at $2.69 a kilo, we think we’ll start a little riot all of our own.

Green Cabbage
Manuel Xerri is going to be busy this week: he’s picking our green cabbages and at $3.40 each, we suspect we’ll need a lot.

Celery
Did I mention celery?? Also from Xerri, just in time for the soup season: big bunches $2 each.

Snowpeas
And staying local: Kim and Laks Ung are picking our Snowpeas again this week, but bigger volumes mean lower prices: $11.90 a kilo.

Leeks $1.42 a week

Butternut pumpkins
Don’t pay $3.50 (Coles) or $4 (Harris Farm) for good-sized butternut pumpkin: just $1.63 a kilo at Box Divvy. Enough for several different soups.

Mandarin
The mandarin season has been slow to get underway, but things are picking up: expect to pay no more than $4 a kilo for Imperial mandarins this week, and they eat superbly.

Persimmon

Here’s another sweet and orange fruit that has dropped in price: persimmon. They’re 85c each – or less than $6 a kilo.

Brussels Sprout

We’re well into autumn now, so it’s Brussels Sprouts time: At Box Divvy, they’re $6.80 a kilo – which is half price compared with supermarkets. Roasted or pan-fried with some garlic and balsamic vinegar: yum.

Truss tomatoes
We found a new supplier of truss tomatoes – Comfresh Farms in SA – they will help us keep prices down to $4.76 a kilo.
