As the weather warms up we need to prepare for those nasty allergies and an increase in skin conditions.

Our Jack Russell LOVES frolicking in the grass during the warmer weather but inevitably gets horrible red rashes all over his belly.

Anti Itch Spray is our go-to, it’s completely natural, crafted from unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar.

Chicken Drumsticks are a great Enrichment activity, working your doggo's jaw, cleaning their teeth and are high in protein and calcium. We have removed the skin to reduce the fat content in the drumsticks, but these treats should still be used as "sometimes treats".

The drumsticks have been slowly air-dried to ensure nutrients are retained.

A major part of why started The Treat Jar is that we wanted to create pet treats from fresh, seasonal, local produce.

This means that sometimes raw material that for half of the year is super easy to source (Turkey for example is only readily available in the lead up to Christmas) is not available through the remainder of the year.

Fresh eggs (chook, quail, duck) are in short supply during winter as birds stop laying over the colder months and let their bodies regenerate for breeding season going through a moult.

Herbs, vegetables and fruits are generally seasonally only available during the warmer months.

We could just pop into Woolworths and purchase imported veggies, or raw meats to make your doggos treats but that’s not what we are about.

Please be patient with us if your order takes a little longer than expected, or if your doggos faves are not available.

These ground whole prey quails have everything intact. The feathers, internal organs, bones and blood provides a high concentration of vitamins and minerals.

Feed as a meal or part of a meal, depending on the size of your dog

This morning we said goodbye to our gorgeous Flash. He was a quirky, beautiful doggo, who loved snuggles, was THE best ball catcher, he was completely uncoordinated, and was always the fastest dog at the park.

Holding him as we said goodbye was heart wrenching, it was a privilege though to be there as he passed.

The hardest part of loving is saying goodbye ❤️

Did you know that eggshells are one of the best sources of natural calcium, with positive effects on bone density and stimulation of cartilage growth.

It has the same bioavailability as that of food grade purified calcium carbonate.

To increase the usability of the eggshell powder we soak it in vinegar or lemons which releases the water soluble calcium making it easier to digest.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE

The rubbery inner membrane of an egg is also incredibly beneficial with known benefits to joint health including glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin, and collagen.

With such amazing health benefits it’s a wonder we aren’t all consuming eggshell powder!

OUR PROCESS

We start with free range farm eggs, washing the shells after we have used the contents, soaking them in vinegar overnight and then drying them in a dehydrator at low temperatures for around 12 hours. Once the shells are crispy we blend them into a powder.

HOW TO USE IT

Like humans dogs don’t produce calcium, it has to be consumed. Most commercial dog foods have calcium added, but if you are feeding your dogs a RAW diet you need to be mindful of their calcium consumption.

Healthy adult dogs require around 50mg of calcium per kilo of body weight.

So our 28 kg collie for example requires 1400mg (1.4g) per day. And 1 teaspoon of eggshell powder contains around 1000mg of calcium so you can see how useable it is!

Please note, that while it is important to add calcium to homemade diets, it is also important to make sure you are not adding extra calcium to commercial diets, especially for large-breed puppies and pregnant females. While adult dogs can excrete extra calcium, puppies younger than six months have less ability to control the absorption of calcium, and that can lead to problems.

If you are unsure whether your dog could benefit from a calcium supplement please consult your Vet.

We sell our eggshell powder in 100gram sachets which is equivalent to fourty one teaspoon serves.

Many of our clients are looking for big dog treats, something that lasts longer than a small chew, or is more satisfying for a larger dog.

In line with our business model, when we purchase a product we find ways to use every single part of the animal. So while breaking down a duck recently we decided to trial air drying the frame.

The result is fab!! A larger enrichment chew, with cartilage, marrow and bone, for dental care, joint support and jaw strength.

If you are looking for an even longer lasting chew, try stuffing the frame with fresh mince. It can then be served fresh or frozen!!

Duck frames can help with dental hygiene as dogs will crunch and tear at the bone with their teeth which will act like a natural tooth brush.
