Today on we celebrate the unique and endangered numbat! This little marsupial that looks part weasel and part anteater is found only in Australia. Known for its long tongue and striped tail, the numbat snuffles on the ground for termites to satisfy its huge appetite. The numbat population has sadly declined to just 1,500 individuals, threatened by habitat loss, introduced predators like foxes and cats, and vehicle collisions. On this special day, we remember how every species has value and we commit to protecting the precious numbat 🐾. Let's spread awareness of this cute critter's plight and support conservation efforts to give the numbat a fighting chance for the future! πŸ˜ΊπŸ¦˜πŸ¨πŸ’š

An AVH PSA is an important reminder during Halloween season. Giving our furry companions human treats can cause major health issues. Chocolate and candy contain ingredients that are toxic 😦 and even fatal πŸ’€ for our dog friends. Even fruits like raisins can be dangerous. Instead of table scraps, treat your good boys and girls with Halloween-themed toys πŸŽƒ and dog-friendly snacks. 🐢 This helps keep them safe and healthy while still allowing them to join in the Halloween fun!

Every Halloween we are tempted to give our loving dogs some of our tasty treats. While your pup may give you those adorable begging eyes πŸ₯Ί, resist the urge to share chocolate, lollipops or candy corn with them. These sweets contain sugar, artificial sweeteners and caffeine that can make our canine companions very sick. πŸ€’ Instead, show your dog some Halloween love by spending extra time with them, giving enrichment toys and healthy dog treats specially made for the spooky season.

With Spring underway, we are seeing more and more of these beautiful little parrots around town. Busily making nests and raising their babies 🦜

Australian native rosella parrots are colorful birds native to Australia. These birds have amazing ❀️red, πŸ’™blue, and πŸ’›yellow coloring. They are mainly fruit eaters and forage on the ground for seeds. They mostly eat fruits like berries and flowers, they are very social birds and can be seen in large flocks, they have a loud screeching call that can be heard from far away, their long tail feathers are used for courtship dances and displays, they nest in tree hollows and lay 3-5 eggs at a time. Australian native rosellas bring vibrant colors πŸ’›πŸ’™πŸ’š and joyful sounds πŸ”ˆto the Australian bush. They are truly unique and wonderful creatures native to Australia.

We hope everyone has enjoyed and maybe even learnt something during WILDLIFE WEEK.

The eastern long neck turtle is an iconic reptile native to Australia. 🐒

These gentle herbivores with their long necks grazing on water plants and algae are a sight to behold in Australian wetlands, rivers, creeks and lagoons. The eastern long neck turtle is recognizable by its olive shell, long neck which can extend more than half the length of its body and large yellow spots on the edges of its shell.

The eastern long neck turtle plays an important role in balancing the ecosystem by controlling aquatic plant growth. Unfortunately these slow moving 🐌 turtles face threats from habitat loss, introduced predators, human disturbances and often find themselves on our busy roads.

If you come across one of these little beauties on the road, if it is safe to do so, please give them a hand to cross. When moving a turtle across the road it is crucial, you pay attention to the direction they are already travelling. They know where they are going and are on a mission, so need to be moved off the road, in the direction they were already headed. A turtles signature, defense mechanism is to urinate when picked up. So to avoid being covered in stinky turtle wee, make sure to hold them away from you.

Australian flying foxes πŸ¦‡ are unique keystone species native to Australia that provide crucial roles in ecosystems. They play an important part in seed dispersal and pollination for over 100 native plant species across the country. Without their help, many native forests would fail to regenerate. These bat species face many threats like habitat loss πŸ₯Ί from land clearing, extreme weather events due to , 🌳and human disturbances that impact their food sources 🌸 and roosting sites. They need our help for long term survival and to keep Australia's diverse ecosystems thriving. Let's support organizations working to conserve these fascinating flying foxes so future generations can marvel at their vital role and nocturnal wonder πŸ–€.

What to do if you come across an injured or orphaned native animal.

Observe the animal from a safe distance and assess the situation.

If the animal is able to move on its own and does not seem in immediate danger, 🐾 it's best to leave it be. However, if the animal appears to be unable to move or is suffering, πŸ₯Ί it may need human assistance.

In this case, 🐾 do not attempt to rescue or treat the animal yourself as this could cause further injury. πŸ₯Ί Instead, contact WILDCARE on 02 6299 1966 or the nurses here at the Cooper St Vet who are trained wildlife rescue & rehabilitators 02 6942 4100. They will be able to assess the situation and provide the wildlife with proper medical attention and care. 🦘

The specially trained WILDCARE volunteers have the training, supplies and facilities needed to rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife humanely and give them the best chance at recovery.🦜 So if you find an injured wild animal, resist the urge to intervene yourself. Instead, call your local wildlife experts right away for help. With the right assistance, the animal just might make a full recovery and returned to their natural habitat. 🐸

✨Possum Magic The charming brushtail possum that calls Australia home! With it's unique furry tail and adorable face, this nocturnal marsupial is an endemic treasure of the Australian wildlife 🐿️ 🐾. The brush-tailed possum has adapted to survive and thrive in a wide range of habitats across Australia, from deserts to cities. They are mostly active at night, spending the daytime resting in tree hollows or man-made structures. Though generally peaceful, the brush-tailed possum plays an important role in balancing Australia's biodiversity by preying on insects and eating fruit, leaves and flowers. Help protect these precious native animals and the unique ecosystems they call home.

Some fun facts about our native Bearded Dragons:

Bearded dragons are native to Australia where they live 🌡 in the deserts and grasslands. They can grow up to 2 feet long 🐊 from head to tail. These lovely lizards love to πŸ™Œ bask in the warm sunlight 🌞 and change color depending on their mood. 😎
Bearded dragons have amazing adaptations πŸ”¬ to survive in the hot Australian outback. Their bodies have πŸ’ͺ thick scales for protection, they can go months without 🚰water, and their πŸ‰ beards allow them to store fat to use as energy.
They also have super cool 🦎 lizard features like the πŸ‘€ ability to move each eye independently, fast πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ running speeds, and a πŸ‘… long sticky tongue to catch insects.
