There are multiple different causes of itchy skin, ranging from ectoparasites, different allergens, skin infections, skin conditions, poor grooming and more.
During the warmer months of the year, we often see an influx in environmental related allergies. ๐ŸŒž

Meet Pippa! ๐Ÿถ

Pippa presented with an acute swelling on her neck from an unknown cause.
Dr Zoe examined the swelling with ultrasound and found that the swelling had a fluid centre.
Pippa was booked in for surgical exploration of the swelling, which proved to be a juicy abscess. You might be surprised to learn the culprit was such a tiny grass seed (see the last pic)!
We are always amazed how these pesky seeds produce such dramatic and varied effects. ๐Ÿฉบ

๐Ÿฅ Tawny Frogmouth ๐Ÿฅ

๐ŸŒณ A little while back we had this juvenile Tawny Frog Mouth brought into the clinic due to concerns that it might have been injured.

๐ŸŒณ The chick was assessed by one of our vets, and after getting the all clear, passed over to a WIRES carer.

๐ŸŒณ If you find a Tawny Frogmouth chick on the ground, it is best to monitor from a distance. If it is uninjured and simply seems to have fallen from the nest, it may be a fledgling that is just learning to fly. Itโ€™s important not to disturb the baby too much. Tawny Frogmouths are known to abandon their young due to human scent.

๐ŸŒณ If you think the chick may have fallen from its nest, and is too young to fly, the best course of action is to call WIRES. A WIRES member will assess the situation and decide what further action is required.

๐ŸŒณ If the chick appears injured (e.g., bleeding, unable to move), contact a wildlife rescue organization for further instruction (WIRES), or carefully take the chick to the nearest veterinary clinic. ๐Ÿฅ

โ˜€๏ธ With the increase in temperatures, it is important to keep an eye on your furry friends and take extra precautions to avoid heat related injuries and illnesses. โ˜€๏ธ

Please note: Brachycephalic breeds i.e short faced breeds (pugs, french bulldogs, persian cats etc) are most at risk of heat stress due to reduced capabilities of their natural cooling systems.

Tips to help keep your pets comfortable in the heat:

โ€ข Limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
โ€ข Ensure plenty of fresh water is provided at all times. Adding ice bricks to petโ€™s water bowls can help keep water cool and refreshing.
โ€ข Provide cool areas for your pet to escape the heat. This can include ensuring access to cool shady areas, providing cooling mats or fans, or allowing your pet inside under the air conditioning.
โ€ข Never leave pets in the car, even for a short time.
โ€ข Watch for signs of overheating if your pet is exercising or playing in the heat.
โ€ข Provide cool bedding or cooling mats for your pet to lie on if they are particularly sensitive to heat.
โ€ข Avoid contact with hot surfaces, including walking dogs on hot concrete or bitumen, and putting them on hot ute trays. This can cause paw pad burns.

Signs your pet is affected by the heat:

โ€ข Excessive panting or drooling
โ€ข Red or pale gums
โ€ข Rapid heart rate
โ€ข Vomiting or diarrhea
โ€ข Weakness or lethargy
โ€ข Disorientation or confusion
โ€ข Seizures
โ€ข Collapse or unconsciousness

If your pet is showing any of the above signs, contact your veterinarian for advice immediately.

If your pet is going into boarding facilities these holidays ensure they are up to date with their annual vaccinations, and that their vaccinations are in line with boarding facilities requirements.

Other things to organise before your pet goes into boarding:

- Ensure your fur babies are up to date with worm, flea and tick prevention.
- If your pet is on regular medications or a special diet, ensure you have enough supply for their stay at the kennels.
- Proof of vaccination.

If your pet is due for vaccinations, or you require a vaccination certificate for a pet that has been vaccinated at our clinic in the last 12 months, please call us on 02 6033 1803 and one of our friendly staff will assist you ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿพ Corowa Veterinary Clinic is unable to accept stray animals between the hours of 3pm Fridays โ€“ 9am Mondays, as we do not have the ability to hold and care for them over weekend closures.

๐Ÿพ It is so important to have your pets registered and microchipped with up-to-date contact details, so that in the event your pet goes missing, it is easy to track owners down and reunite missing pets with their families.

๐Ÿพ Registration and microchipping of pets also helps avoid council fines.

๐Ÿพ Please read the above slides for advice on what to do if you find a lost pet!
