⏱️An Update For Services For The Breeding Season

With a young family and a large volume of horses to service on farm this season it is with a heavy heart I must advise clients that I will be unable to service clinic consults until the new year; this includes both emergency and general consults.

For our regular clients we can supply your horses medication if we have seen you in the last 12 months. For clients falling outside these guidelines we can forward your horses history to a veterinarian of your choice.

We understand this is difficult given the veterinary shortage at present but as a single practitioner there is only so much I can juggle. Thank you for entrusting me with your horses over the years and we look forward to seeing them again as soon as time allows.

🥜✂️ it’s that time of year…
Babies were recently weaned and today were gelded, branded and microchipped. All in a mornings work.
Whilst we generally perform these procedures at our clinics surgery suite for multiple numbers it’s sometimes easier to do on farm.
These babies were superstars this morning 🌟

With boarded specialist Dr Hadley Willsallen visiting our clinic regularly we are able to take on surgical cases instead of them traveling further away. We certainly see some interesting cases!

DID YOU KNOW?

Puncture wounds in the foot qualify as medical emergencies, due to the amount of vital structures just beneath the sole that can be physically damaged and/or contaminated with bacteria when they are penetrated by a sharp object.

If your horse steps on a nail or other sharp object and it remains embedded in the hoof, resist the temptation to pull the nail out and consult with your veterinarian first. Leaving the nail in place will allow the vet to take x-rays of the foot before removal, which helps to identify exactly what structures have been penetrated, and to plan the most appropriate strategy for dealing with the situation.

If your veterinarian advises, carefully remove the nail to prevent the horse from stepping on it and driving it deeper into the hoof cavity. As you remove it, be sure to mark the exact point and depth of entry with tape and/or a marker so the veterinarian can assess the extent of damage. Apply antiseptic to the wound, and wrap to prevent additional contamination while you wait for your appointment.

Penetrating hoof wounds can be extremely serious and shouldn’t be underestimated. The prognosis for successful recovery depends on quick action to identify the path of the nail, treatment of potential infection and mechanical damage to the foot, and proper aftercare. As always, consult your horse doctor for more information and advice!

🚨EMERGENCY VETERINARY CONSULTS🚨

If you own a horse within the Cowra locality please feel free to read and share.

Pepper Tree Farm Equine Clinic is able to offer emergency veterinary consults for horses at the clinic; available by calling 0437 412 597 (NB: text messages will generally not be answered out of hours so if you have a genuine emergency please call).

We appreciate in clinic care will not suit all people but please understand as a single vet practice and the only dedicated equine practice in the immediate area we are responsible for the care of a vast number of horses.

By providing emergency care at the clinic we are able to see and help a larger number of horses. The clinic care also allows to have full use of all available equipment to better help your horse.

We do genuinely want to help as many horses as possible in the area and there are a few things you can do to help us to help you:
🐴Establish a good relationship with your equine vet. We can always better help horses when we know what is normal and not normal for them. Book your regular vet care such as health checks, equine dentals and vaccinations with us so we can get to know you and your horse outside of emergency situations.
🐴Have a plan in place in case of emergency. When we have seen your horse in the last 12 months we can dispense emergency medication such as pain relief, etc. We can also provide a first aid kits to have on hand (i.e. bandaging, thermometer, etc)
🐴Not all horse owners have a float. We understand that. However you should have a plan in place where a friend or neighbour will loan you a float or help you transport your horse. Also practice loading your horse so its one less stress in the event of an emergency.
🐴DO NOT wait to call your vet. When you notice a problem contact us; please do not wait days or weeks to get your horse help. If its not a true emergency an email to [email protected] or text (with photos if applicable) will be answered in business hours. If it’s a true emergency or you are unsure then don’t hesitate to call.
🐴We appreciate owning horses is expensive but it is also expensive to provide an emergency veterinary service. We cannot carry the cost of non-payment. If you are not a regular client with an established account we will ask for payment at the time of consult. Set some money aside to care for your horse in the event of an emergency.
🐴Please be respectful. As a single vet on call I do my best to see as many emergencies as possible. However occasionally I will be away from the clinic and unavailable. My voicemail will always notify you in the event I am away.

We look forward to continuing to help you and your horse 🐴
